Wirtz will make him “world-class”: Liverpool ready to push for £65m star

Liverpool are beginning to resemble something of last season’s title-winning team. There is a long way to go, but Arne Slot’s side have won back-to-back-to-back in the Premier League, and they are unbeaten in seven matches altogether.

Instrumental in this blooming revival has been Florian Wirtz, whose velvet touches and crafty playmaking have started to pay dividends after a challenging start.

Routinely, the German midfielder, who signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m in July, has been the architect of Slot’s still-struggling system, creating 13 chances from five matches in December, as per Sofascore, and finally breaking his duck during the weekend win over Wolves at Anfield.

Burt Liverpool are still lacking something from an attacking perspective, and that appears to be sporting director Richard Hughes’ emphasis heading into the January transfer window.

Liverpool eyeing attacking additions

Slot will be sleeping a little easier after stopping the rot that had spread across Liverpool’s campaign, now settled in the top four of the Premier League once again, albeit some distance away from first-placed Arsenal.

There is still a shakiness to Liverpool’s defending, and the Reds are lack fluency when building attacks up, so it’s understandable that FSG are ready to invest in spite of their record-breaking summer of spending.

Some may clamour for a centre-back, but there’s a sense Liverpool are going to wait until the summer for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Should Slot want Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, however, Liverpool must strike now, with Manchester City closing on the Ghanaian forward.

The pointers suggest Semenyo is headed for the Etihad Stadium, but The Telegraph have revealed that Liverpool are primed to launch an ambitious hijack, with the 26-year-old’s £65m release clause there for the taking.

Hughes initiated talks with Bournemouth in November, but discussions haven’t been followed up on. That could soon change, though, as the market prepares to open for business.

Why Liverpool must push for Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo is the talk of the Premier League. He has scored nine goals and provided three assists across 17 matches for Bournemouth, and pundit Chris Waddle has even described him as “the best winger in England” this season.

Two-footed and with an eye for goal, the pacy and powerful winger has all the ingredients to succeed at Liverpool, and Slot would surely find balance across his frontline by adding the former Bristol City prospect to his mix.

Wirtz got off the mark against Wolves, but it’s easy to forget that the German’s duties centre on being creative, supplying teammates. As per FBref, the 22-year-old ranks among the top 10% of positional peers in the Premier League for shot-creating actions and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90.

This contrasts perfectly with Semenyo’s purposeful strides from the wing and into the danger area. A nine-goal return is nothing to be sniffed at, especially when considering he has only missed five big chances.

In this, Semenyo is growing into a true superstar, and one who could form a formidable alliance with Wirtz in Liverpool’s frontline.

Among Liverpool’s biggest problems have been their physicality and ability to react to issues that arise in any given match. Wirtz, however, is a natural problem-solver, and he just needs more fluent teammates around him to go from strength to strength.

Semenyo’s “world-class” consistency, as has been noted by teammate Justin Kluivert, has fired him into the ascendancy. Now Liverpool must take advantage and stop him from moving to rivals Manchester City.

Liverpool have been known to steal players from under rival suitors’ noses in the past. Luis Diaz was seemingly bound for Tottenham in 2023; Cody Gakpo was honing in on a transfer to Old Trafford after the World Cup in Qatar.

Semenyo’s directness would see him mimic and outstrip such players. He is ferocious in front of goal, and this could work in tandem with Wirtz’s creativity to restore the sparkle to the Anfield side’s frontline.

Llorente and Koch fit for Leeds v Spurs

Leeds United have been boosted by the news that Diego Llorente and Robin Koch are both available for the Premier League clash with Tottenham on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Huge game for Leeds

The Whites were thumped 6-0 away to Liverpool on Wednesday night as their hugely worrying form continues ahead of the business end of the season, with just one point taken from the last 15 on offer.

On Saturday lunchtime, Leeds welcome Spurs to Elland Road for a vital league clash between two out-of-form sides, with Antonio Conte’s men losing four of their last five matches in the division.

Injury problems have hampered the Whites throughout the campaign, but some positive news has emerged on that front going into the weekend.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Whites receive double boost

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday [via Yorkshire Evening Post], Marcelo Bielsa confirmed that Llorente and Koch are available this weekend, having both missed the Liverpool game. In the latter’s case, it was due to a head injury he suffered against Manchester United last Sunday.

The Leeds manager revealed: “Llorente and Koch are available. With respect to the knock to his head, I never said that it wasn’t dramatic for a player to receive a knock, I said that knocks have grave and dramatic consequences. What I did say that we shouldn’t dramatise situations that don’t deserve to be dramatised.”

The Verdict: Timely returns amid defensive concerns

This is undoubtedly a positive update, one which means that Luke Ayling will be able to revert to his preferred right-back role on Saturday, duly giving the team more balance.

Defensive stability has been an issue throughout the season – Leeds have conceded 56 goals in 25 league matches – but having Llorente and Koch both potentially starting tomorrow should make Bielsa’s team more solid at Elland Road.

It is imperative that the Whites stop the rot quickly and avoid getting dragged into the relegation zone – victory on Saturday would feel like a big moment in their season in that respect.

Aston Villa: Morrison hails Watkins

Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison applauded Ollie Watkins after he put Aston Villa in front against Southampton on Saturday.

The lowdown

After dropping to the bench for the defeat against Watford last month, Watkins earned his second consecutive start, lining up alongside Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho in Steven Gerrard’s attack.

The 26-year-old had given The Villans the lead against Brighton and Hove Albion last time out and he repeated that feat here, beating Southampton defender Jack Stephens before firing past Fraser Forster.

It was his seventh goal of the campaign overall, taking him two clear of Jacob Ramsey at the top of the club’s scoring charts.

The latest

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme, Morrison called Watkins’ finish ‘fantastic’.

He marvelled at the fact that the £75,000-per-week Englishman turned Stephens ‘like he wasn’t there’.

The verdict

This was a doubly significant goal for Aston Villa.

It marked the first time Danny Ings, a £26.5million summer signing, and Watkins had combined for a goal.

Questions have been asked (by The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, for instance) about whether the pair can function effectively as a partnership.

Gerrard, then, may be particularly satisfied to see his faith in the pair finally rewarded.

After all, it’s a big call to start both players when you have the likes of Leon Bailey (who cost £28.8million) and Emiliano Buendia (£34.56million) available on your bench.

Ange can find Celtic’s new Rogic in Summers

While an impressive run of form over the winter schedule – including nine consecutive wins between December 26 and February 13 – saw Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side take the lead in the Premiership title race, the Bhoys’ form has tailed off somewhat in recent fixtures.Indeed, over the Hoops’ last four outings in all competitions, the 56-year-old manager’s outfit have won one – a narrow 3-2 victory over bottom of the table Dundee FC – drawn one – a lacklustre 0-0 draw with Hibernian – and lost two – 3-1 and 2-0 defeats against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League. However, not only have the general displays of the team been poor, but a number of Postecoglou’s first-team regulars have also suffered a dip in their level of performance in recent weeks – none more so than Tom Rogic, with the attacking midfielder having averaged an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.48 over the four fixtures in question. As such, while David Turnbull remains out through injury, should the Greek-Australian coach wish to afford the 29-year-old a rest from his starting XI, perhaps he should look towards one of the club’s most exciting youth prospects in the Australia international’s place – in the shape of Ben Summers.

“Talented kid”

Despite being just 17 years of age, expectations of Summers are clearly extremely high amongst those in the know at Lennoxtown, with Celtic B team coach, Tommy McIntyre, stating of the forward-thinking midfielder:

“He’s a talented kid, he’s been working really hard. We know he’s still got a long way to go in terms of having to bulk up a little bit, but he’s got great footwork and he knows where the goal is. He’s got a good career ahead of himself.”

It is not difficult to see why the 58-year-old coach has high hopes of the career of Summers, as the teenager turned in a spectacular display in Celtic B’s 3-1 win over the University of Sterling on Sunday.

He cooly slotted home from 12 yards after some excellent work out wide by Ben Doak to draw his side level, before threading a defence-splitting outside of the foot pass through to Adam Brooks who tucked home to give the young Bhoys the lead midway through the second half, both of which can be seen below:

As such, while Summers is undoubtedly one to watch for the future, should Postecoglou indeed wish to give Rogic a break from his starting XI, the 17-year-old undoubtedly appears as if he possesses the ability to do a sterling job in the middle of the park for the Hoops.

And, who knows, should the youngster impress when given a chance by the 56-year-old, perhaps he could even go on to become Celtic’s next Rogic in the long-term.

CPFC’s Zaha let Vieira down vs MCFC

Crystal Palace managed to secure a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the reigning Premier League champions and current leaders Manchester City at Selhurst Park last night.

This draw meant that the Eagles have stopped Pep Guardiola’s side from scoring in both of their league meetings this season after beating them 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium back in October.

Despite their impressive defensive efforts last night, it was one of Palace’s attacking players that arguably cost Patrick Vieira the chance to see his side break into the top half of the table.

With 90 minutes under his belt, winger Wilfried Zaha only had 42 touches of the ball in total, which is three fewer than goalkeeper Vicente Guaita managed to have and could only accurately complete 15 of the 23 passes he attempted with no crosses or key passes and just one long ball, losing possession on 12 occasions throughout the game.

In the few times that the home side managed to get forward and attack City’s goal, having just 26% possession overall, the Ivory Coast international found himself in an offside position twice, bringing an end to their attacking moves.

When his side didn’t have the ball, the winger, who has been slammed in the past by Peter Crouch for his “stupid” challenge that got him sent off against Tottenham Hotspur back in late December, failed to make any tackles to win possession back for his team and ended up losing nine of the 16 duels he was involved in.

With seven attempts at goal in total, Vieira would have been hoping that his attacking players, especially Zaha who has nine goals to his name in the league this season, would have been clinical against the Manchester club once again as they were in their away victory against them.

This latest display for the south London club ultimately earned the 29-year-old an overall match rating of 6.9 from SofaScore, lower than the likes of Cheikhou Kouyate, Tyrick Mitchell, Marc Guehi and Guaita, who made five saves to keep a clean sheet for his side.

Football.London also picked up on his lacklustre performance by saying that “his influence waned in the second period.”

Moving forward, while the winger arguably let his manager down on this occasion by not being able to help his side pick up a goal that could have won them the game, Palace will take confidence in the fact that they managed to stop one of this season’s highest-scoring teams from finding the back of the net on this occasion.

Leeds: Hay drops Joe Gelhardt contract news

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered an encouraging update on where things stand with Joe Gelhardt’s new contract at Leeds United.

What’s the story?

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Joe Gelhardt is rapidly shooting up the list of players who Leeds United would like to tie to a new contract. He’s already asking the same question of Jesse Marsch as he asked of Marcelo Bielsa – how long can you hold him back?”

In a follow-up article for The Athletic, Hay then added: “The 19-year-old’s form over the past nine months has pushed him towards the upper end of the list of players who Leeds would like to tie to new contracts as soon as possible.

“The terms he signed when he moved from Wigan in 2020 ran for four years and the subject of an improved deal has already been broached with his camp, although with Leeds tied up in a relegation fight, negotiations are likely to wait until the season is resolved.”

Gelhardt’s the future

Make no mistake about it, Gelhardt represents the future of Leeds United’s attack, whether that be in tandem with Patrick Bamford over the 12 next months or so, or else leading the line on his own in the years to come.

He has already proven himself to be a player for the big occasion this season in the Premier League, netting the dramatic late winner against Norwich City last week and also being the man to earn a stoppage time match-saving penalty against Wolves earlier in the campaign.

Whether or not the Whites remain in the Premier League, tying down Gelhardt to a new long-term deal and protecting him from the vultures of some of the top flight’s European-contending clubs will be crucial.

The former Wigan ace is already making a big impression at just 19 years of age, and you can only wonder at how just how good he will become in the next few seasons or so.

Delph returns to full Everton training

Everton have had their fair share of injury problems this season which has ultimately led to a disappointing and stressful season for the Toffees, with the side now engaged in a relegation battle in the remaining months of the season, however some good news has emerged from Finch Farm this week.

What’s the word?

The Merseyside club’s official Twitter account has confirmed the return of Fabian Delph to full training following a lengthy injury spell, with the club’s social media platform simply captioning a tweet “Fabian Delph: back in full training” alongside some images of the 32-year-old back in action.

The central midfielder has been plagued with a number of injury problems this season, with two periods of absence due to a shoulder injury back in August that side-lined the player until October, and then sustained another injury to his thigh in late January that has left him on the recovery table ever since.

Lampard will be delighted

Adding depth to the team when they are in the vulnerable position that Everton have found themselves in is always a huge boost for Frank Lampard, especially a player full of experience and understanding of what the club and the fans expect from the team as Delph has been with the squad since 2019.

Despite being out of the team for a large chunk of the season only making six appearances so far, the 32 year old can offer a number of attributes to the team, as not only is he effective in central midfield, he can also make an impact on the left side and even in the left back position if Lampard feels that he needs to deploy him there over the last games of the season.

His return has also come at a good time from a midfield perspective for the Toffees, as Allan was red carded in the victory over Newcastle United, in a controversial VAR decision that was unsuccessfully appealed by the club, meaning the Brazilian will miss three Premier League games when fixtures return next weekend, and Delph’s return will be a relief to Lampard giving him more options to replace the suspended player in the centre of the pitch.

Everton’s win in the Premier League last week has put them three points clear of the relegation zone, but has not secured their safety to remain in the league next season as of yet, so Lampard and the team still have work to do to make sure they can avoid the club’s first relegation from the top flight in 71 years, and Delph’s return will certainly be a positive boost.

MUFC’s fresh setback in manager search

Manchester United have been taking advantage of the break in the season with the World Cup qualifiers taking place to step up their manager search for the next coach to lead the club back to their winning ways this summer.

Unfortunately, they have just been delivered a huge setback with one of their most admired candidates.

What’s the word?

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Wednesday afternoon that Luis Enrique has given an update on his position as the Spain national team manager amid speculation that he could be lined up for the job at Old Trafford this summer.

Romano tweeted: “Luis Enrique is understood to be only focused on Spain, nothing else. He’s lots of admirers in Man United board but it’s described as ‘more than complicated’.”

Glazers will be fuming

If the report from Romano is to be believed, there is no doubt that the Glazers will be fuming that they are struggling to tempt Enrique from his international job with Spain, especially when it is said that he has a lot of admirers on the Man United board.

Thus, it will clearly be a growing frustration for the owners and the club, who are still yet to make a decision.

Enrique is believed to be amongst Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino as front runners for the highly anticipated role, taking over from interim boss, Ralf Rangnick, at Old Trafford this summer. There is a huge project in place to revive the club back to their best, winning trophies after they have now fallen into their longest trophy drought in 40 years.

The 51-year-old manager is a proven winner which we saw throughout his time as Barcelona manager winning a Champions League, Club World Cup and two La Liga titles during his three-year tenure at the Spanish club.

Winning major trophies is something that Manchester United are surely desperate to achieve in the future, and Enrique clearly has the credentials and experience to bring those successes back to Old Trafford. So with that being said, they will either have to settle in defeat or make a more lucrative and tempting offer that the Spanish manager will struggle to refuse.

Leeds: Ben Dinnery drops Illan Meslier injury news

Medical expert Ben Dinnery believes Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier may need to wear protective equipment against Southampton on Saturday, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Injuries galore…

The international break came at the right time for the Whites after they registered back-to-back wins against Norwich and Wolves.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The 3-2 victory at Molineux came at a cost, with Patrick Bamford, Diego Llorente, Mateusz Klich and Meslier all being forced off due to injury.

Bamford has been ruled out for six weeks with a fresh foot problem, but Llorente and Klich have returned to training.

Leeds confirmed earlier this week that Meslier was yet to return to Thorp Arch training, but the club expect him to be fit for the visit of Southampton.

The Latest: Dinnery reacts

Dinnery, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI after that update from the club emerged.

He labelled the injury as ‘nasty’, however, the expert admitted he’d be ‘very surprised’ if he wasn’t available for selection on Saturday, hinting at possible protective padding.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-40/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“It was very, very painful.

“He hasn’t trained in the first week of the international break but Leeds are fairly confident for the Southampton game.

“It may be that he has some sort of protective padding to help that area. But I’m fairly confident this will just be a case of pain management.

“It was a nasty one that forced him off but I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t available for the game against Southampton.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

The Frenchman is yet to miss a Premier League game this season, so you’d expect Jesse Marsch will be keeping his fingers crossed that he can call upon the 22-year-old once again at Elland Road.

Meslier leads the way when it comes to saves made in 2021/22, becoming a key member of the squad following promotion to the Premier League.

He may well require protective padding on his bruised upper thigh and lower torso, as Dinnery mentions, and if that helps, it should be a no brainer from the Leeds medical staff.

Everton eyeing "fantastic" Middlesbrough star who's dropping hints about his future

Everton have now set their sights on signing a midfield star who could replace James Garner if he leaves as a free agent in the summer, according to reports.

Man Utd and Newcastle interested in James Garner

Whilst much of the plaudits have been sent the way of Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Garner has quietly been enjoying his best season yet in an Everton shirt. Unfortunately for the Toffees, however, that form is set to coincide with the end of his current contract in the summer.

The Friedkin Group should be desperate to agree fresh terms with their midfielder, but reported interest from former club Manchester United and Newcastle United may yet put a pin in those plans.

Having his say on Garner’s future, David Moyes claimed that the club will be doing everything to keep hold of Garner beyond this season and if it was up to him, he would not be heading for the exit door.

The one-year extension option should hand the Toffees the advantage in talks, but they’re not without a back-up plan if Garner does depart in the summer. According to TeamTalk, Everton have set their sights on signing Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney.

Everton now eyeing Hayden Hackney move

The young midfielder has looked destined for the Premier League for some time now, even if that does not come courtesy of Championship promotion at Middlesbrough.

In previous years, he’s been content with staying put in Teesside, but reports are now claiming that Hackney is switching agents when January arrives in what could be a major hint about his club future.
