Birmingham City worryingly eye Rob Green move

According to HITC Sport, the Blues are eyeing up a move for ex-England veteran stopper Robert Green.

What’s the Story?

Birmingham City have reportedly moved for the 38-year-old free agent, who spent last season as a back up keeper for Premier League Huddersfield Town.

Robert Green is probably best known for his howler in the 2010 World Cup, as England failed to beat the USA, after he fumbled a speculative Clint Dempsey effort. He is however vastly experienced, having made over 200 appearances for both Norwich City and West Ham United. Green has not started regularly since he was Leeds United’s first choice stopper in the 2016/17 season, managed by Blues manager Garry Monk.

The news comes after David Stockdale and Tomasz Kuszczak have both been told they are free to leave the club.

A good move for the Blues?

Robert Green did not make a single appearance for Huddersfield last season, and is certainly reaching the tail end of his career at the age of 38. This would suggest he might not be the solid goalkeeper Birmingham need to help push the club on, having flirted with relegation last season.

Conceding the most away goals in the Championship last season, the position is certainly something Birmingham need to strengthen in. Speculation that he is to join the Blues as a first choice stopper would likely be worrying news for Blues fans, who will be hoping to see improvements in that particular position.

However, if Robert Green can keep himself match fit, Birmingham City might feel he is a reasonable goalkeeper for the number 2 spot, who can do a job if called upon.

After a season on the fringes of the Huddersfield Town squad, it is likely that Robert Green has accepted that this will be his role if he is to remain playing football in the top two levels of English football.

Arsenal fans pick apart Iwobi’s performance for Nigeria against Croatia

With a new manager at the helm, Arsenal’s players will need to fight for a place in the first team by impressing prior to the start of the season.

For a number of those players, they have an opportunity to catch Unai Emery’s eye during the World Cup in Russia, but in Alex Iwobi’s case, he may have harmed his chances of first-team action.

The 22-year-old, who is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, started for Nigeria in Saturday’s Group D match against Croatia, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for Iwobi’s side.

The Arsenal man played out wide, but was largely ineffective and eventually was substituted in the 62nd minute to make way for Ahmed Musa.

Last season for the Gunners, Iwobi made 38 appearances in all competitions but only contributed with three goals and created seven for his teammates.

The attacker’s playing position has been debated many times, with some suggesting that he is much more effective when selected as a striker rather than a wide man.

This discussion was raised by Arsenal fans following Nigeria’s defeat to Croatia, as was his overall performance.

Newcastle fans react to Atsu fitness update

Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu recently posted a video on social media as the attacker works his way back to fitness following a knee operation.

[ad_pod ]

Atsu made 28 Premier League appearances for the Magpies last season, but missed his team’s final six matches of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery.

The 26-year-old has struggled with knee issues over the last three years, but the operation is expected to correct the problem, and he is building towards the 2018-19 campaign.

Atsu spent four years on Chelsea’s books, but never played a Premier League game for the Blues – spending time on loan at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga before making the move to Newcastle.

The Ghana international showed signs of his best form last term, and the Newcastle fans are looking forward to seeing the attacker in action next season.

It was not much of a surprise to see the positive responses from the Newcastle supporters to the video, and it must be said that Atsu looks in good shape ahead of the new campaign.

Spurs fans are having second thoughts after beastly Dembele performance

After finding out what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a Mousa Dembele master class, Tottenham fans are starting to wonder if they’re making a huge mistake letting the Belgian leave this summer.

Dembele is expected to leave North London this summer, as the fan favourite midfielder enters the last 12 months of his contract.

The 30 year-old’s style of play is extremely physically demanding, especially in such a fast-paced league, and he has been linked with moves to both China and Italy.

Mauricio Pochettino has not done much wrong since taking over at Tottenham, but fans are starting to feel cashing in on Dembele is a mistake, after the wiry midfielder dominated Belgium’s 1-0 win over England.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”258359″ player=”12034″ title=”The World Cup Twitter Report”]

The Belgian beast made four tackles, a total matched only by Danny Rose and Youri Tielemans, and he also completed 99 per cent of his passes. Yes, you read that right; Dembele had a 99 per cent pass success rate.

On the other side, Eric Dier struggled massively, not making a single tackle or interception.

While Pochettino and Daniel Levy will undoubtedly bring in a new signing to atone for the loss of Dembele, playing against him has made fans realise exactly what they’ll be missing if he goes, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Lose Richarlison this summer, and another underwhelming season beckons for Everton

According to a recent report from The Daily Mail, Everton could face a fight to keep hold of Richarlison come the summer transfer window. The Brazil international only made the move to Goodison Park last year after impressing at fellow Premier League side Watford last season, and he has taken that form into his spell on Merseyside to further underline his credentials in the English top-flight.

And a recent report from The Daily Mail suggests that Chelsea are interested in a summer move for the 21-year-old as they prepare possible replacements for Eden Hazard, and were Marco Silva’s Toffees to indeed lose the talented forward this summer, another underwhelming season would be on the horizon for the Merseyside club.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it has been a testing season so far for new manager Silva at Goodison Park, as while the Portuguese made an encouraging start to life on Merseyside, things have gone wrong recently to pile the pressure on his shoulders.

The Toffees were sat in sixth place in the Premier League table only back in December to underline the fine start the 41-year-old made at Goodison Park, with the former Watford and Hull City chief going some way to bringing the excitement back to Everton after last season’s dismal football under Sam Allardyce.

Yet things have since taken a turn for the worst given Silva’s side have won just three times in the league since their 1-0 success over Cardiff City at the end of November, losing on seven other occasions to slip to ninth place in the table – clearly, that is simply not good enough.

Yet one of their bright sparks this season has been 21-year-old Richarlison, who made the big money move to Goodison Park during the summer to once again link-up with Silva, having produced the goods under the Portuguese at Watford in the first half of last season.

And the Brazil international has once again proven his worth with ten goals and two assists in 24 Premier League matches for the Toffees, with all ten goals coming in matches that Everton have gone on to either win or draw – clearly, he delivers when it matters most.

In fact, his tally of 11 goals in all competitions sees him atop of the Toffees’ goal-scoring charts this term to further underline his significance, but most important of all he has given Silva another option in the number nine role given the struggles of the rest of Everton’s pool of strikers.

The likes of Cenk Tosun and Oumar Niasse simply haven’t been able to lead the line effectively when called upon during their respective times at Everton, with Richarlison the man Silva has shoe-horned into the main striker’s role on occasion this term – imagine the predicament they would have been in without the Brazilian ace.

And in a team that have invested heavily in recent years in a bid to bridge the gap to the Premier League’s top six, they simply cannot be in the business of selling their best and most important players – they won’t get anywhere if they do.

And in Richarlison, the Toffees have themselves an asset – an asset that can aid them in their quest up the Premier League table in the years to come.

Losing him is simply unthinkable this summer, as doing so would all but end their chances of moving up the division – in fact, an underwhelming campaign would beckon for Everton were they to sell the 21-year-old to Chelsea.

Arsenal legend labels Man United newbie a ‘massive gamble’

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has described Manchester United’s deadline day move for Anthony Martial as a ‘massive gamble’, according to the Daily Mail.

The £36m swoop came as the transfer window slammed shut with the 19-year old arriving from Monaco in a mega-money move.

But, his compatriot Henry has labelled the deal as ‘a weird one’ and claimed ‘there’s always a question mark whether he can perform.’

The teenager has drawn comparisons with the former Arsenal and Barcelona star during his short career after plying his trade at the Stade Louis II for two seasons.

Henry, now a TV pundit, believes the fee is ‘mind blowing’ for a player who has played 52 times in Ligue 1.

Now the most expensive teenager in world football, the former Lyon attacker has ‘a lot of boxes you can’t tick’ according to the World Cup winner, who believes he requires ‘games, experience and time to perform.’

Martial arrives at Old Trafford to link up with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay in a new look front line for the Red Devils.

‘You are not the same player that are you after 100 or 150 games from the 50 that you start with – especially as a centre forward’, claimed the Sky Sports pundit who won two Premier Leagues and three FA Cups with the Gunners.

Martial, who scored 12 times in 48 appearances with the provincial outfit last term, will now link up the French squad ahead of their international friendlies with Portugal and Serbia.

He is in line to make his debut for his new side in their clash with Liverpool on 12th September.

Why Chelsea striker was too honest but Gestede is a Villain

There are two mentalities within the game that while being polar opposites can exist without impeding on one another. They are the use of gamesmanship and good old fashioned sportsmanship.

Unlike the latter, gamesmanship isn’t taught in schools. Every good physical education teacher should drill into students the correct way to play sports and the times when competition is suspended in order to do the decent thing. The easiest example of this is throwing the ball out of play when is someone is injured and then the opposing team returns it as a thank you gesture.

Gamesmanship is the evil cousin of sportsmanship. It’s a tool used by professionals that see the potential gains too large to allow any area of exploitation left untapped. It doesn’t mean breaking the rules but it does mean stretching them in order to get the desired outcome. The two schools of thought cannot exist in the same moment. A footballer couldn’t be sporting and apply a form of gamesmanship at the same time.

The previous weekend presented us with three good examples that are spread along the spectrum from sporting to game playing.

The first point of reference was Chelsea striker Loic Remy against Stoke City. The reigning champions were 1-0 down with only five minutes left on the clock. An onrushing Jack Butland, the Stoke ‘keeper, came toward Remy in such a fashion that the striker had to treat him like he was a hurdle at Aintree.

Chelsea believed they had grounds for a penalty. It was clear had Remy allowed contact and gone down he would have gotten one. Instead he tried to remain on his feet and pursue the chance. His honesty served to penalise him. Their was no reward for trying to do the right thing. Given the situation again he would probably go down looking for the spot kick.

Which brings us to incident number two. Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling was denied a penalty against Aston Villa after minimal contact with Ciaran Clark in the first half of a 0-0 draw.

Replays show the defender stood on Sterling’s foot and there was enough contact to warrant the claim. However, the accusation is Sterling overplayed his part, so the referee didn’t buy into it.

Perhaps Raheem did add the theatrics to the foul but that is because in the modern game players overreact to ensure the officials are aware of illegal contact. A player that hasn’t been met with enough force to genuinely send him to the ground, but goes there anyway, is applying gamesmanship. He isn’t cheating but he isn’t being entirely truthful.

The final point comes from the same match. The oldest of sporting gestures, returning the ball after it had been thrown out for an injured player on your team, was transferred into a vile act of gamesmanship.

Rudy Gestede decided not to gently throw the ball to the Manchester City goalkeeper, instead he hurled it with pace at Joe Hart. It’s unclear if the Villa player just wanted to make it a goal kick and was displeased when Hart signalled he’d accept it instead.

Some have suggested Hart should have just stepped out of the way and allowed this to happen. But a sporting gesture shouldn’t come with extra terms and conditions. What made the situation worse was the manner in which Gestede ran toward Hart, presumably hoping he wouldn’t be able to control the ball.

Instead it went for a corner kick. At this point one of the Villa players should have seen sense and just kicked it out for a goal kick. From the ball into the box Gestede hit it over the bar, had it gone in there would have been a very difficult decision for the ref to make.

Arsenal have been there twice, on both sides of the crime, and even replayed a game against Sheffield United because of it.

We all want a game that rewards players who stay on their feet and punishes cheats and divers. At the moment there’s nothing in place to protect honesty but too much protecting deception.

There will always be some gamesmanship. From subtle name calling and whispers to player’s acting like they’ve been shot after a soft foul. European competition is particularly rife with it nowadays. The excuses for its existence shouldn’t be so freely accepted when it begins to erode away at sportsmanship.

If we don’t protect the good natured side of sport, one day they will be teaching gamesmanship in schools.

Manchester United boss predicts future Red Devils captain

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has predicted Chris Smalling to be the future captain of the Red Devils, according to reports from the Daily Star.

This has been a drastic transformation from a year ago, in which the centre-back was branded ‘stupid’ by his manager for being sent off in the Manchester derby following two yellow cards in succession.

WANT MORE? >> Manchester United Transfer News | Latest Transfer News

But after being told to change his ways by the Dutchman, Smalling is now an integral part of the Man United defence, starting the last 22 fixtures and named as the club’s vice-captain.

And Van Gaal had nothing but praise for the 25-year-old, saying that he has nobody to thank but himself for his incredible improvement the past 12 months.

He said: “Every player makes the steps by himself. I put him in the situation, help and advise him and then it is up to the player to take it on board or not. It is his responsibility.

“He has done it by himself. It is about how we defend as a team. He is a part of that and I wanted him to speak more (on the pitch). He also has the talent to speak.

“Because of that I made him a leader of the team. He has also made steps in a tactical way.

“When you give instruction in terms of organisation you need someone to understand that.

“Rooney is the captain and then there is Carrick, but when they are gone then Chris Smalling can do that. So I push him also in that situation.”

The Red Devils will hope to continue from their emphatic 3-0 win against Everton in the previous gameweek, with league leaders Manchester City coming to Old Trafford in a top-of-the-table encounter this Sunday.

Football Manager 2016 guide: Aston Villa

While the beginning of any save on Football Manager takes a bit of time to get going, your starting point with Villa requires a whole new approach to understand what each of your players can do, because of the lack of quality in the squad.

Remi Garde has taken the reigns recently, but the ex-Lyon manager is yet to fix the errors made by Tim Sherwood during his turbulent time at the club.

To be a truly brilliant manager on FM16, you need to be able to make a shoestring budget work in your favour and get the best out of the young talent that you have at Villa Park.

Grealish will need to be crucial in your line-up, whilst replacing Benteke, Delph and Vlaar is a challenge only the very best will manage…

What you start with…

Kindly, the Villains board don’t even give you a penny to splash on transfers.

The wage budget stands at around £1million-per-week – with a bit of wiggle room – and Lerner’s desire to sell prevents any chance you may have had of gaining a bit more financial backing.

What’s expected…

Premier League – Typically, the Villa board are just hoping that you can stay away from the drop zone in your first season.

FA Cup –  A cup run would be nice, but the little it does to your budget hardly makes it worth considering if it will jeopardise your league performance.

Capital One Cup – As ever, the Capital One Cup is consider as a bit of a gimmick compared to the sanctuary of PL safety, but a nice run to the final could swing the board in your favour.

Three to buy…

Sebastian Larsson – Larsson might be ageing, but his versatility will help add some depth to your squad. Comfortable on the wing, at right-back, or centrally, Larsson will add experience to a young squad and is one of the best crossers you will be able to attract to a bottom half side. Sunderland won’t want to let one of their better players go, but Larsson must be a target if you are to sure up the Villa midfield.

Vurnon Anita – Anita is going to be a wonderful acquisition if you could attract him to Villa Park. The Magpies’ man is comfortable in front of the back four or in a more advanced playmaking role and offers a very well rounded game for a central midfield player.

A passing rating of 16 will be ideal to feed in to Grealish and Gil, but his strength of 6 may be some people off.

Michu – Michu may have disappeared into the wilderness, but he still has stats that could attract you to chase down the Swansea man (or ex-Swansea depending on your update).

Ideally, Michu will compete with Gil for the number 10 role, but the Spaniard can also operate as a lone striker and cause problems running beyond or with his back to goal.

Three to sell…

Gabby Agbonlahor – The Birmingham road-runner might still have his pace, but its probably best to offload this speed merchant while you can.

His finishing is 9, which is diabolical, and at 29- years-old, his pace is likely to go within a season or two. If you wait for his pace to vanish, you’ll be left with a player who is not much good at anything, and no one wants that.

Mark Bunn –  With Jed Steer as backup to Brad Guzan, Mark Bunn’s position in the squad is clearly unnecessary. Bunn is surplus to requirements and, at 31, not going to improve into anything more than a third choice keeper.

The money brought in from this sale will be minimal, but it could help to add to your wage budget for loan transfers.

Gary Gardner – A previous star of both FIFA and FM, Gardner is no longer anything more than an ordinary backup option for the Villains. His development potential may encourage you to invest some time in this central midfielder, but it would be far better to use the small amount of revenue to find someone who could impact on the XI immediately.

Youngsters…

Jack Grealish – You are likely to face a lot of interest in Villa’s biggest starlet, but avoid temptation with hefty transfer fees and Grealish will become the star to drive your save forward for several seasons.

Versatility is one of his biggest assets, being able to play anywhere behind the striker, and develops into a player with the creative spark that will see him as an England regular within a couple of seasons.

Adama Traore – Recently brought in to the club, Traore should be a player that you look to build your attack around. The La Masia graduate has exceptional dribbling from the start of your save and the pace to cause any defence real problems.

Unfortunately, his crossing of 10 will need a bit of work before he can become a reliable creator from the wing.

Callum Robinson – Robinson can be sold after a couple of seasons for a nice bit of profit, but you may be able to find a use for him in your squad.

His finishing is comfortably higher than a couple of your other options at centre-forward and could save you the finances of investing in another striker.

Five January transfer sagas that will continue in the summer at Man United

The Premier League shelled out a combined £175million last month, making it one of the most expensive January transfer windows of all time, to push the division’s spending during the 2015/16 season to a record-breaking £1.045billion.

Surprisingly absent from all the cash-splashing action, however, was Manchester United. Five points off a Champions League spot, lacking depth at the back and quality in attack, the majority of fans are a little bemused as to how the Red Devils ended up being just one of two Premier League clubs – along with relegation-bound Aston Villa – who failed to sign a single player.

But recruitment is now a year-long process at the majority of clubs in world football and although United finished the January window empty-handed, they may have laid the blueprint for several deals to take place during the summer.

With that in mind, here are Manchester United’s FIVE January transfer sagas that look set to continue in the offseason window.

RENATO SANCHES

He’s been billed as ‘the new Ronaldinho’ and could reportedly cost Manchester United anything up to his £59million release clause.

Indeed, Renato Sanches has rapidly emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters – although it wasn’t long ago people were calling Benfica team-mate Goncalo Guedes the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’ – and Manchester United allegedly want him, probably to play alongside ‘the new Thierry Henry’ and resultantly transform themselves into ‘the new Barcelona’.

But a deal for the 18-year-old was never going to happen mid-season, when United would’ve had to pay a premium to convince the Primeira Liga outfit to sell, despite late window murmurings of a £22million deal.

The last thing the Red Devils need is an overhyped teenager suddenly thrown into the mix, but they’re expected to return for the Portugal U19 midfielder at the end of the season.

SADIO MANE

Manchester United were courting Saido Mane last summer, after he notched up ten goals during his debut Premier League campaign, and were linked with him again in the build-up to the January transfer window.

The Senegal international’s output may be a little inconsistent but he represents exactly what the Red Devils currently lack in the final third – dynamism, penetrative pace and the ability to run past the centre-forward.

Southampton, however, made it clear on several occasions that they would not be selling their talismanic attacker in January, with Ronald Koeman claiming none of his players would leave St. Mary’s – even if the club received a £100million bid.

But after two windows of heavy interest from United and other major European clubs, the Saints are almost certain to sell Mane in the summer when his contract will have entered its final two years. The 23-year-old has made it clear he won’t sign a new deal.

DAVID DE GEA TO REAL MADRID

As news of Real Madrid’s impending transfer ban hit the rest of Europe, some sources claimed Real Madrid would launch a swoop for long-time target David De Gea, who infamously missed out on a Bernabeu switch during the summer.

The alleged bid never materialised but a summer move still seems relatively likely, providing Los Blancos manage to delay their twelve-month embargo until after the next transfer window as planned.

After all, De Gea is one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, is known to be very keen on playing for Real Madrid and allegedly has a £35million release clause included in his contract. Manchester United meanwhile, could end up missing out on Champions League football by the end of May.

A bid next summer – especially as Real Madrid look to rebuild before spending a year out of the transfer market – seems somewhat inevitable.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG

Pretty much every major club in Europe – including Manchester United – was linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the January transfer window, in no small part due to his rather sensational return of 18 goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances from the first half of the season.

Quick, powerful and increasingly lethal in front of goal, the Gabon international has often been mooted as a good fit for the Premier League, so with Dortmund reportedly valuing him at £42million, he seemed well worth the investment.

But the 26-year-old consistently insisted he wouldn’t be on the move in January, claiming that he was ‘not at Arsenal, not at Barcelona and not on the moon’, and that quickly proved to be the case.

But Aubameyang could undergo a change of heart at the end of the season, once Dortmund inevitably miss out on the Bundesliga title and many of their key players – including Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan – will have just a year left on their contracts.

The problem for United, however, is that competition for the winger-forward’s services remains fierce. Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona and Chelsea – to name a few – have all been credited with interest.

EDINSON CAVANI

Another striker linked with a Manchester United move last month was PSG’s Edinson Cavani – most notably after manager Laurent Blanc not-so-subtly hinted he’d be prepared to part with the Uruguay international.

There were rumours of last-minute talks with the Red Devils amid their need for added firepower. The 28-year-old is one of world football’s best in that regard, boasting incredible returns of 104 goals in 138 appearances for former club Napoli and 69 in 120 for the Parisians, but a deal always seemed likelier to take place in the summer.

By that point, the 72-cap international will have just two years remaining on his contract and PSG will have a whole transfer window to find a viable replacement, rather than spend the second half of the season entirely dependent on Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But Cavani is no spring chicken at the age of 28 and even if PSG do look to offload during the summer, United might turn to younger alternatives instead.
