Suggestion Arsenal could sign £42m Bayern Munich winger on loan in January

Arsenal have been tipped to go after a new wide player in the January transfer window following injuries to Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling, and it is now suggested that a Bayern Munich star could be up for grabs on a temporary deal.

Bukayo Saka out until March as Arsenal target new winger

On Friday, manager Mikel Arteta shared the news that Saka could be out until March after undergoing surgery on his hamstring problem.

The England star was forced off in the 24th minute during Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, with news then emerging that Saka was set for a lengthy absence in what is a real blow for Arsenal.

Arteta has since confirmed the expected timeline for Saka’s recovery, and it makes for grim reading, as the 23-year-old appears likely to be sidelined for over two months.

“He had a procedure,” said Arteta in his post-Ipswich press conference.

“Everything went well, but unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks. I said many weeks, so I think it will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer.

“It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, the mobility of that. Let’s see, it’s very difficult to say.”

Gabriel Martinelli played on the right wing in place of Saka during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Ipswich on Friday, while Gabriel Jesus can also play out wide when required, so there are existing options at Arteta’s disposal.

However, credible media sources have shared that Arsenal are scouring the market for a new winger in January (The Athletic), with targets for the position emerging over the last week.

Dani Olmo is reportedly on Arsenal’s radar heading into the new year as the Spain international could leave Barcelona for free next month due to ongoing registration issues with La Liga.

Depending on developments, it could become the biggest available bargain of the January window, leaving little wonder that Arsenal are monitoring this situation.

Suggestion Arsenal could sign Kingsley Coman on loan in January

Olmo isn’t their only potential target, though, with reliable journalist Simon Collings of Standard Sport hinting that Bayern winger Kingsley Coman may be up for grabs.

The France international, who commanded a price tag of around £42 million in the last transfer window, has bagged four goals and two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions this season.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

Collings suggests that Arsenal could have the option of signing Coman on loan from Bayern when the window reopens, and listed the 28-year-old as a possible incoming for the Gunners when discussing their activity for January.

Coman’s extensive injury record is a cause for concern when evaluating a possible swoop, but there is little denying his quality when fit, available and firing.

“King is one of the most important players for us,” said former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann in 2022.

“He has the ability to solve any one-on-one situation on the pitch. King is one of the best players in Europe when it comes to wingers. He’s also a brilliant character and an important part of the dressing room.”

Charlie Dean provides the bite as Vipers book Finals Day slot

The Southern Vipers are the first team through to Charlotte Edwards Cup Finals Day – and the final – after beating Thunder by six wickets under lights at Emirates Old Trafford, chasing 95 in 15.3 overs.Vipers have qualified for the Northampton showpiece (June 11) with one Group B game remaining following a superb bowling and fielding display led by England off-spinner Charlie Dean, who returned three for 16 from four overs to limit their hosts to 94 for six.Thunder included England trio Emma Lamb, Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone – the latter pair only just back from IPL Challenge commitments in India. But they were unable to break the shackles imposed on them by a team who have now won all five games in the competition named after their head coach.None of the Vipers’ five bowlers conceded more than 20 runs in their four-over spells, with left-arm seamer Freya Kemp also impressing with two for 20 before Georgia Elwiss top-scored in the reply with a measured 38 not out off 35 balls. The Vipers have also qualified direct for the final a week on Saturday as the best of the two group winners courtesy of a five-point, bonus point win here. They sit on 23 points, while Group A leaders Central Sparks have 17 with only five more points to play for. This was a display from the Vipers which had all the hallmarks of a team who reached last year’s Charlotte Edwards semi-final and are back-to-back Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy champions.Thunder, who elected to bat, lost in-form openers Lamb and Georgie Boyce for five and nine as the score slipped to 44 for three after 10 overs.Kemp had Lamb caught at mid-on and bowled Boyce. Sandwiched in between, Cross, promoted to bat at three, fell victim to a combination of England team-mates Dean and Danni Wyatt for 18.Cross hoisted Dean out to deep midwicket, where Wyatt took a fine low catch on the run.Ecclestone was also promoted to No.4 in a side who have struggled for middle-order runs through the competition. She demonstrated her power by pulling her fourth ball for six over backward square-leg off Kemp as the score moved to 41 for two in the 10th over – shortly before opener Boyce’s dismissal.Unfortunately for Thunder, playing in the primetime slot on a T20 double-header day with Lancashire’s men, there was no more acceleration. While Ecclestone made 28 not out off 32 balls, she was unable to find the boundary again and saw canny Dean trap Danielle Collins lbw and get Thunder captain Ellie Threlkeld caught and bowled cheaply. In all, Thunder only hit four fours and that Ecclestone six, while 21-year-old Dean has now taken eight wickets in her first three games of the summer. This was her best haul so far.Determined to complete the chase in 16.1 overs to secure the bonus point win which qualified them direct to the final, visiting openers Wyatt and captain Georgia Adams were busy from the off.Wyatt slog-swept Ecclestone for six over midwicket to advance the score to 22 without loss after three overs. But there was a stumble as both openers fell in the space of four balls as the score slipped to 34 for two in the sixth over. Wyatt was stumped for 13 by Threlkeld sweeping at ex-World Cup-winning spinner Alex Hartley before Cross had Adams caught at cover for 17.Another left-arm spinner, Hannah Jones, had Maia Bouchier caught and bowled before Threlkeld superbly stumped Kemp stood up to Laura Jackson’s seam as the score fell to 75 for four after 13 overs. But the presence of Elwiss ensured they were only minor blips, hitting five fours in her match-clinching innings.

Arsenal now identify "unstoppable" £50m forward as key January target

Arsenal have now identified an “unstoppable” £50m forward as a key January target, with Mikel Arteta looking to fill the void left by the injured Bukayo Saka, according to a report.

Arsenal in hot pursuit of Liverpool

The Gunners maintained their push for top spot with an impressive 3-1 victory away at Brentford last time out, but Saka’s absence could be a huge dent to their chances of catching Premier League leaders Liverpool, who continue to set the pace.

As such, work has started to bring in a suitable replacement in the January transfer window, and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku has reportedly become an option, with the 27-year-old willing to make the move to the Emirates Stadium.

Not only is Arteta keen on signing a new winger, but he is also interested in bringing in a new striker, despite Gabriel Jesus’ resurgent recent form, and a deal for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is said to be possible this month.

GiveMeSport have now dropped a further update on who Arsenal could bring in this winter, naming Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo as one of their top targets as they look to fill the void left by Saka.

It may be difficult to get a deal over the line, however, as the Bees are determined to keep hold of their star player, and his form so far this season means they are now demanding a fee of around £50m to sanction his departure.

Mbeumo has shot up the Gunners’ list of targets after watching him in action, and they have started to look at how he would fit into Arteta’s system at the Emirates Stadium. But although Arsenal are very interested in the forward, they are now in serious danger of missing out on his signature.

Mbeumo going from strength to strength

The Cameroon international has gone from strength to strength since making his Premier League debut back in 2021, and he is on course to blitz his goal record in a single season for the Bees during the current campaign.

Ivan Toney’s departure could’ve been a huge blow for Brentford, but the former Troyes man has more than stepped up to the plate in his absence, drawing high praise from Premier League legend Alan Shearer earlier in the campaign.

Shearer described Mbeumo as “unstoppable”, and he continued his fine form in front of goal against the Gunners on Wednesday night, scoring the opening goal of the game in his side’s 3-1 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Brentford star has proven that he is ready to take the next step in his career by signing for a bigger Premier League club, and he could be a fantastic addition for Arsenal, but it seems likely that the £50m asking price will be prohibitive.

Bangladesh could test their bench strength in the final ODI, their captain has indicated

Bangladesh were keen to turn their fortunes around in their tour of the West Indies after losing the Tests and T20Is convincingly, according to Tamim Iqbal who oversaw the ODI side’s march to a 2-0 lead in the series. The visitors put together a nine-wicket win in the second game against West Indies, their biggest win in terms of balls remaining.Tamim said the team was reeling from the absences of Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Yasir Ali, but they spurred them on bring about their fifth successive ODI series win. Shakib and Mushfiqur skipped the series due to personal reasons while Yasir has a back injury. Bangladesh also missed allrounder Mohammad Saifuddin who couldn’t recover from a back injury ahead of the series.Related

Bangladesh, West Indies and their contrasting progress in ODIs

“The confidence falters when three players from your best XI are missing,” Tamim said after the match. “But the boys didn’t allow the team to miss them. Everyone was hungry to win. We wanted to take something from the tour, particularly after the T20 series. It is not about me, but the other fifteen. I think we got this result due to the players’ desire.”Every win is special for us, regardless of whether we are playing Australia, England, New Zealand or Zimbabwe. We have to work hard to get to centuries or five-wicket hauls. We should celebrate the wins, because at this level, nobody gifts you anything. You have to fight for everything.”Bangladesh decided to field first in both games, giving them a significant advantage on the Providence Stadium pitches that aided the spinners. The visitors dropped Taskin Ahmed to make room for Mosaddek Hossain, the spin-bowling allrounder, as they expected more help for spinners ahead of the second game.”These are very difficult wickets,” Tamim said. “Worse than Mirpur. You don’t know which delivery will get you out on these wickets. We had scores of 149 and 108, so I don’t want to judge anyone on these wickets.”We knew that we needed one more spinner when we looked at the pitch yesterday [Tuesday]. We also thought it might be worth having an extra batsman. You can lose back-to-back wickets on this wicket. The ball spins too much. It was a totally tactical decision. Taskin was very unfortunate to miss out; he had been bowling well.”Mosaddek Hossain came in as the extra spinner and took the wicket of Kyle Mayers•AFP via Getty Images

To counter the spin themselves, Tamim took Litton Das’ advice to tweak Bangladesh’s batting line-up. It meant breaking the Tamim-Litton opening partnership, Bangladesh’s most frequent pair in the last five years.”Opening with [Najmul Hossain] Shanto was a brilliant call by Litton,” Tamim revealed. “Towards the end of the West Indies innings, he told me how about I go out to open with Shanto. I thought he made a wonderful call. It would have been really difficult for right-handers in the middle.”Shanto and I thought that we can do without scoring runs. When the left-arm spinners finish all their overs, they still have to bowl 30 overs. We had a 48-run partnership but here it is worth a 100-run stand.”Now the captain believes it is the turn of those in the bench to get their opportunities. It would mean Anamul Haque, Ebadot Hossain and Taskin getting to replace one batter and possibly the pace bowlers Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam.”The most important thing is to test our bench strength,” Tamim said. “We don’t do it often in the Bangladesh team. You can’t do that when points are involved but being 2-0 up in this series allows us to see those who have been traveling with us for many months.”I think it is completely fine for me to miss a match. If we don’t test our bench strength now, then when will we do it?”

Everton made "important bid" to sign massive upgrade on Dwight McNeil

Fair to say, Everton really need to strengthen their attacking options in January.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth means the Toffees have not failed to score in eight of their last ten Premier League matches, leaving them just one point and two places above the relegation zone.

Also, as noted during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, since the start of last season, Everton have scored just 26 goals from open play; for context, that’s a ginormous 30 fewer than the team second-bottom of this list, namely West Ham.

Under Sean Dyche, spending has been very minimal but, following the Friedkin Group’s takeover, confirmed in mid-December, there’s likely to be scope for the Blues to bring in much-needed reinforcements this month.

Premier League player wanted by Everton

As reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter earlier this week, Everton had “opened talks” with Aston Villa, as they attempt to sign Jaden Philogene.

However, in a big twist, the player is now on his way to Ipswich Town with Fabrizio Romano having revealed on Wednesday night that he’s due to travel to Portman Road for a medical.

Despite being just 22-years-old, Philogene has already played for Stoke City, Cardiff City, Hull City and now Aston Villa twice.

It was last season, when he was with the Tigers, he really burst onto the scene, scoring an astonishing rabona against Rotherham in February 2024, that was nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award.

This led to journalist Lewis Railton describing him as a “skilful, yet direct winger”, labelling him a “real talent”.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

How Jaden Philogene would have improved Everton's attack

Well, since moving back to the Midlands, the winger has been given limited opportunities, starting just four matches across all competitions, totalling 535 minutes overall, yet to register a goal or an assist during his second spell in claret and blue.

Thus, a move away from Villa Park in January could be best for Philogene’s development.

As mentioned earlier, Everton really find goals hard to come by; they’re the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with just 15 goals, while they’re also bottom of the xG standings, accumulating a miserly 18.1 to date.

Their joint-top scorers are Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye, both with a miserly three goals, so how does Philogene compare to the Toffees’ current wide-attackers?

As outlined, since the start of last season, Philogene compares favourably to Everton’s existing winger options.

He’s scored more goals, registered more progressive carries and attempted more shots than all of the trio, most crucially of all, Philogene has overperformced his xG, while Jack Harrison and Ndiaye have both underperformed theirs.

McNeil, the most impressive of the Toffees’ trio, has missed the last six games due to a knee injury, with Dyche describing this issue as “a bit trickier than we thought”, but even when he was playing regularly, Philogene was outperforming his numbers.

Thus, put succinctly, this is a deal Everton should be gutted about failing to complete.
