Salliann Beams is set to step away from her successful coaching posts after being named Cricket Tasmania’s new general manager of high performance just a few months out from the start of the WNCL and WBBL.Beams coached Tasmania’s women’s team to the WNCL title last season and had signed an extension to remain coach of Hobart Hurricanes but has opted to move back into a high performance role taking over the job vacated by Simon Insley earlier this year.Beams is currently in the UK coaching the Trent Rockets in the women’s Hundred but will return to Australia to oversee Tasmania’s men’s and women’s cricket program, which will be a return to high performance and away from coaching, having previously been the Cricket Performance Manager at Loughborough University in England.”When I had the chance to sit back and really think about my own career progression, this is the direction I really want to head in as I am passionate about creating the best high performance systems and people,” Beams said.”I had a great working relationship with Simon and his departure was a surprise and I was really sad to see him go, and it wasn’t until the dust had settled from that that the potential of this opportunity really dawned on me.”Having signed a [head coach] contract extension back in May, this clearly wasn’t something I’d planned, but the opportunity to work in the male system while still working with the same players and staff in the women’s program made it really enticing to me.”Jeff [Vaughan, Tasmania and Hurricanes men’s head coach] and I have always collaborated really well together, and we have a great team of coaches and support staff across the entire department, so I’m looking forward to watching a lot of success unfold on the field this season across all five of our elite teams, as well as working to develop and implement the strategy of how we’re going to further improve Tasmanian elite cricket in the medium- to long-term.”The opportunity to stay within the organisation after leaving a head coaching role is an exciting one, and something I am grateful for. The organisation has achieved a lot in recent years and I can’t wait to play a role in ensuring Tasmanian cricket reaches its potential in the future.”Salliann Beams coached Tasmania coached Tasmania to the WNCL title last season•Getty Images

It leaves Cricket Tasmania searching for a new WBBL and WNCL coach with the season not too far away, but CEO Dominic Baker said the general manager appointment was a critical one to get right.”Filling such a crucial role like a high performance manager is always a mammoth task, and as you would expect, the quality of the applications we received was exceptional,” Baker said.”To have the best person for this role already within this organisation was a bonus for us. We pride ourselves on our people, and Salliann’s plan and vision for the future of high performance presented to us through the recruitment process was exceptional.”She has already shown us that she is a great coach, but as well as the technical side of things, she is an excellent strategist, and always looking for ways that we can be better, not just on the field in the short-term, but to ensure the future of Tasmanian cricket is sustainable for years to come.”

He’d be "world-class" with Dorgu: Man United prepare bid for £51m star

The last few weeks of the January transfer window have been dominated by exits for Manchester United, with countless players linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

However, it’s what is needed under Ruben Amorim if the 39-year-old is to be a success during his time in charge, subsequently allowing him to make his own mark on the side.

Antony appears to be edging ever closer to a loan move to join Spanish side Real Betis until the end of the season, with Marcus Rashford still constantly touted for a departure from his boyhood club.

Manchester United'sAntonyduring the warm up before the match

The Englishman has been subject to interest from the likes of AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund over the last couple of weeks, but is yet no closer to securing a move after being left out of each of the matchday squads since the start of December.

Such departures could free up wages, allowing the new boss to make his own additions to the squad and potentially end their dismal run of form in the Premier League.

Man Utd set to bid for young talent this month

According to one Spanish outlet, Man United are prepared to make a bid to land Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande before the window closes in a couple of weeks time.

The 21-year-old has featured in all but one Liga Portugal outing throughout 2024/25, breaking into the first team under Amorim during their time together at the club.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

The report claims that the Red Devils are preparing an offer in the region of €60m (£51m) for the Ivorian to provide added depth into the backline for Amorim.

Given his tender age, he could be an immediate and long-term option at the heart of the defence for the former Sporting boss, allowing him to work with a player who he knows very well given their previous time together.

However, whilst it may be an expensive addition, it would allow for a superb partnership between Diomande and one other new addition who has been constantly rumoured with a move to Old Trafford.

Why Diomande could form an incredible partnership with Dorgu

Diomande isn’t the only player touted with a switch to the North West in recent days, with United also keen on a move for Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu over a switch this month.

Patrick Dorgu scores for Denmark

The 20-year-old has been in superb form in Serie A this campaign, scoring three times and registering one assist in his 20 appearances, leading to the rumours over a move to England.

Dorgu, who would be a key addition to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, fits the bill perfectly with his high energy allowing him to make an impact at both ends of the pitch.

The Denmark international would be able to star in the backline along with Diomande should both complete a transfer, with the Ivorian star having the skill set to improve the options in the defensive department whilst handing Dorgu the opportunities to thrive in attacking areas.

The centre-back, who joined Sporting in January 2023, has been a dominant force at the back, winning three aerial duels per 90 in 2024/25, at a success rate it 72% – showcasing his talents that would undoubtedly improve the current unit in the North West.

He’s also won 63% of the tackles he’s entered, managing to complete 1.3 interceptions per 90, with his attributes hopefully ending the club’s current run which has seen 13 games without a clean sheet.

Diomande, who’s previously been labelled “world-class” by analyst Alex Brice, has completed 94% of his passes, completing an average of 81 per 90, handing Dorgu the chance to make an impact within attacking areas.

Such a transfer would allow the central defender to follow in the footsteps of Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo in moving to Old Trafford from Sporting – with both making themselves fan-favourites in the process.

Whilst a deal would cost the Red Devils a huge transfer fee this month, it’s one that would massively bolster the defensive department, looking to put an immediate halt to the current crisis at the back.

Diomande has the tools to be an immediate impact but also possessing bags of potential to improve further down the line and become one of the leading talents in Europe for many years to come.

Do outro lado, a Portuguesa-RJ vive situação oposta.

Ireland hold nerve in last-over thriller to snap winless streak

Fifties from Balbirnie and Tucker set up the chase, before Dockrell and Tector added the finishing touches

Ashish Pant09-Aug-2022

After losing seven T20Is and three ODIs, and not managing a win all summer – despite coming close on more than one occasion – Ireland finally managed a W in their column. In what turned out to be a nail-biting finish, George Dockrell and Harry Tector kept their cool as Ireland beat Afghanistan by seven wickets on the penultimate ball in the first T20I in Belfast. It was, however, a chase that the hosts almost fluffed up.Needing 48 runs off six overs with nine wickets in hand, chasing 169, Ireland seemed to be in the driver’s seat, but a couple of tight overs gave Afghanistan a sniff again. With 13 needed off the last over, Dockrell, though, held his nerve and slammed Naveen-ul-Haq for two successive fours to give Ireland the win with one ball to spare. That Afghanistan have played only five T20Is in 2022 prior to the game, and no international cricket since June 14, clearly showed as they struggled to find the timing on a slightly two-paced Belfast surface. However, Usman Ghani’s fourth T20I half-century backed up by a quick 18-ball 29* in the death overs from Ibrahim Zadran, did manage to propel the visitors to 168 for 7.Andy Balbirnie’s welcome return to form, followed by Lorcan Tucker’s second fifty in his last three T20I innings, then kept Ireland coasting through. However, what seemed like a straightforward chase for the majority of the stretch changed course with Balbirnie and Tucker falling in quick succession. But, Tector and Dockrell brought out the big hits just in time to take Ireland over the line.Ghani to the rescue
Having scored just eight runs off seven balls in the first five overs of the powerplay, Ghani knew he needed to get a move on. With Rahmanullah Gurbaz gone in the fifth over, Ghani soon opened up his shoulders. He struck fast bowler Mark Adair for two successive fours at the start of the sixth over before launching offspinner Andy McBrine for an inside-out six over wide long off. Ghani rotated the strike well and often found the boundaries, forging important stands with Gurbaz, Hashmatullah Shahidi and then Najibullah Zadran. He reached his half-century – the second against Ireland in the format – off 35 balls to guide a sluggish Afghanistan batting unit. When Ghani eventually fell in the 15th over, he had laid a good foundation for the lower order to lift off from.George Dockrell and Harry Tector celebrate after securing a last-gasp win•Getty Images

A roller-coaster of a bowling performance
Ireland had an iffy sort of a day with the ball. While they were excellent in patches, regular boundary balls released most of the pressure. A few of the bowling changes also did not help Ireland’s cause. On a surface that had a bit of carry and steep bounce, Joshua Little and Adair were all over Afghanistan in the first three overs. They bowled the hard lengths and had Gurbaz, in particular, in a lot of strife. Then, for some reason, Balbirnie introduced the spin of McBrine into the attack. And that is just what the Afghan openers were searching for. Gurbaz, who was on 4 off 12 balls at one point, smashed McBrine for three fours in an over to release the shackles. Ireland did manage to contain the Afghanistan batters in the middle overs with only 34 runs scored between overs 13 and 18 and the hosts striking four times. However, a wayward final over from Adair once again turned the momentum towards Afghanistan. Trying to experiment a bit too much, he fell off his lengths as Ibrahim carted him four two sixes, a four and two doubles to take Afghanistan to a slightly above-par total. Balbirnie’s and Tector keep Ireland coasting
With a highest score of 14 in his last five T20I innings, Balbirnie had been under fire for a while. However, when required the most, he stood tall for his team. The Ireland captain looked the part from the get-go. He started off his boundary counter by smashing Mujeeb Ur Rahman over fine leg for a six before Fazalhaq Farooqi was cracked for two fours in the third over. Even as Paul Stirling played out a maiden at the other end, Balbirnie was not fussed. He found boundaries at regular intervals, and even his singles had a stamp of authority. Once Stirling fell, it was Tucker’s time to shine. Both batters were unruffled through the middle overs. They played out Rashid Khan sedately but also made sure they rotated the strike whenever the chance arose. Balbirnie reached his seventh T20I half-century off 34 balls while Tucker reached his fourth off 31 balls. The duo added 62 runs for the second wicket. Ireland almost fail to close out a game, again
The entire summer has been a case of so near yet so far for Ireland. They have failed to close out games having done all the hard yards. And, once again, they found themselves in a similar situation. At 121 for 1 after 14 overs, most would have hedged their bets on Ireland chasing the target down. But, the Afghanistan bowlers kept the fight on. The equation finally came down to Ireland needing 23 off the last two overs. Farooqi then bowled a decent 19th over that went for just ten runs despite Tector smashing a six off the second ball.Naveen, who had been impressive all day, was then tasked with the final over. However, he struggled with his lengths and was first carted over extra cover by Tector before Dockrell finished off the chase with a four straight down the ground and a cross-batted heave between deep mid-wicket and long-on. For the kind of two months they have had, Ireland deserved to close this game out.

West Ham offered "intelligent" £21m Barcelona ace with January contact made

West Ham United have an opportunity to strike a January deal with Barcelona, as manager Graham Potter attempts to shore up key areas of his squad.

West Ham in talks to sign midfielder and striker for Graham Potter

As per reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, the east Londoners are maintaining their negotiations to bring in both a new midfielder and striker before the deadline.

It was believed that West Ham had agreed a deal for Ezechiel Banzuzi, with that news even reported by Sky Sports, but Ex has since poured cold water over this and insists that they remain in talks with OH Leuven.

“We submitted a bid two weeks ago which was rejected with his club saying they didn’t want to sell him until the summer and would demand a lot of money for him to move now,” stated Ex (via West Ham Way).

“Karen Brady was thought to have taken a lead with this transfer and has continued with talks with the players agent. We have remained in contact with the club and talks have continued without a formal bid being proposed or of course accepted since the original offer. This is a transfer that could be revisited again soon.”

Amid their pursuit of the Dutch midfielder, it is also believed that West Ham are in negotiations to sign Andre Silva from RB Leipzig on loan until the end of the season, which may eventually include a buy-out option.

“We had continued our talks with Andre Silva over a loan move to the summer,” said Ex again.

“The loan deal would potentially have an option at the end of it to make the deal permanent. Talks will continue today but at the moment other options are being considered as well. As I’ve been saying for a while now I think this is the easiest deal to complete and one we may chose to do as a temporary measure that could turn out to be a bargain.”

Now, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, West Ham could have an opportinity to reinforce their defence.

West Ham offered Barcelona defender Eric Garcia

Writing for The Boot Room, Bailey claims that Barcelona defender Eric Garcia has emerged as an option for Potter. The Spaniard, formerly of Man City, has played more of a bit-part role under Hansi Flick at the Camp Nou this season – leading to reports that Barca could sell him this window for around £21 million.

Barcelona'sEricGarciareacts

West Ham have been offered Garcia by intermediaries, who’ve contacted the Irons to let them know about his availability. As well as West Ham, it is believed Tottenham, Brighton, Wolves, Newcastle and Aston Villa have been approached as well.

Garcia can actually play in defensive midfield as well, so if a move for Banzuzi fails, then the 24-year-old could be a solid alternative.

“Eric is a very intelligent boy – more than a boy,” said City director of football Txiki Begiristain. “He is a good character, a solid leader.”

Louis Kimber now stars with ball as well as bat as Foxes' winning run goes on

Skipper Lewis Hill sees Leicestershire leap ahead

In-form Louis Kimber produced a superb all-round performance to guide in-form Leicestershire to a crucial four-wicket win over Gloucestershire in the Royal London Cup.Leicestershire won the toss and Kimber claimed career-best figures of 4 for 61 as the home side were restricted to 262 for 9 in their 50 overs, Marcus Harris and Jack Taylor scoring 58 and 50 respectively. He then played a starring role with the bat, brushing off the loss of early wickets to post 68 from 70 balls and lay the foundations for a successful run chase.Foxes skipper Lewis Hill and Wiaan Mulder took centre stage thereafter, both contributing half centuries and staging an alliance of 90 for the fifth wicket as Leicestershire reached their target with four overs in hand.Hill top-scored with 82 from 75 balls while Mulder finished unbeaten on 56 from 62 balls. Zafar Gohar proved the pick of Gloucestershire’s bowlers, taking 3 for 64 from 10 overs.Related

A third straight victory keeps Leicestershire top of the group and on course for a home semi-final, but Gloucestershire must now win their remaining two matches against Surrey and Middlesex this weekend and hope other results go their way if they are to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages.Defending a below-par total, Gloucestershire needed to take early wickets and Zafar accounted for openers Nick Welsh and Rishi Patel, both caught by Oli Price at slip in the act of pushing forward as the Foxes slipped to 20-2 inside seven overs. Worse followed for the visitors, Kimber refusing a single and sending back Arron Lilley, who was brilliantly run out for 19 by Ben Charlesworth’s direct hit from mid-off with the score on 63.But Kimber was enjoying one of those days when everything he tried came off, the 25-year-old from Lincoln raising a 47-ball 50 to keep the chase on track. Spearheading the chase. he dominated a partnership of 63 with Hill for the fourth wicket to bring the required rate down to just over five, and was threatening to take the contest by the scruff of the neck when he inadvertently hoisted slow left armer Tom Smith to long-off in the 24th over to afford Gloucestershire much-needed respite.Having hitherto been cast in the role of chief support, Foxes skipper Hill now assumed responsibility for steering his side to a fifth win in six matches. He went to 50 via 53 deliveries, his ability to punish the bad ball and find the boundary taking a good deal of pressure off his new partner, Mulder. By the time Hill departed, caught at short fine leg off the bowling of Zafar, Leicestershire were required to score at fewer than four runs an over and were virtually home and dry.Taking full advantage of the ankle injury which ruled out opener Chris Dent, Charlesworth came into the Gloucestershire side and contributed a useful 31 from 47 balls in a progressive stand of 73 in 13.5 overs for the second wicket with fellow left hander Harris. Australian Harris summoned some handsome off drives in raising a 47-ball 50 and the home side made more or less serene progress until Kimber entered the attack with the score on 82-1 in the 18th over.An occasional bowler during his time at Loughborough University, Kimber has been pressed into service by Leicestershire in the 50-over competition in the absence of frontline spinners Rehan Ahmed and Callum Parkinson, both of whom are currently engaged in The Hundred. While his off breaks proved useful in previous matches against Warwickshire and Sussex, Kimber made an altogether bigger impact on events in Bristol, bowling Charlesworth with his first ball from the Ashley Down Road End. He subsequently lured James Bracey into front-foot indiscretion and bowled the former England Test batsman for four and then had Australian Harris stumped for 58 in his next over as Gloucestershire subsided to 106 for 4, losing three wickets for the addition of 24 runs.A rebuild was required and Oli Price and Taylor obliged in a restorative alliance of 75 in 17.1 overs, these two taking low-risk options to put the innings back on track. Taylor survived a scare on 31, driving Kimber to the long-on boundary where a back-pedaling Chris Wright succeeded only in helping the ball over the rope.Gloucestershire’s captain made good his escape, scoring a run-a-ball 50, including 2 sixes and 4 fours, before driving uppishly at Wright and holing out to extra cover.
