Tottenham Hotspur have made an approach to sign a “special” player from Man City, as Ange Postecoglou’s side chase their first outfield winter deal in dramatic fashion.
Tottenham's scattergun January market amid injury crisis
It is never a normal day at Spurs, with club chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange desperately attempting to back Postecoglou in the final days of this window amid the club’s severe injury crisis.

Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Radu Dragusin are all set to miss Tottenham’s clash away to Brentford on Sunday, with Postecoglou in disbelief over their bad luck with injuries this season.
“Every time I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually been an oncoming train,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s player availability concerns.
“We’ve obviously got a big week, but we play Villa in the cup, and then we’ve got a clean week to Manchester United (on February 16) and that’s the week all of them are sort of scheduled to start training.

“To have a full week of training with those guys available leading into the Man United game, I think it is a little bit of a point for us to relaunch our campaign, particularly in the league, but then we have real big games of consequence in the cups coming around as well.
“I mean, that’s why I’m trying to manage the minutes of the guys we have available because we don’t want to lose anyone else.”
In botched attempts to reinforce the squad recently, Randal Kolo Muani snubbed a move to Tottenham in favour of Juventus, while Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel also rejected Spurs’ advances.
Tottenham now appear to have adopted a scattergun approach to the final 72 hours of the window, as many names are linked with moves to north London.
Tottenham make contact over signing Man City forward James McAtee
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, writing for The Boot Room, Man City attacking midfielder James McAtee is now a target for the Lilywhites.
Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match
Tottenham have made contact over signing McAtee from City in the last 36 hours, and while it is stated that Pep Guardiola’s side are not entertaining the prospect of him leaving, what is clear is that the homegrown Englishman could tick many boxes for Postecoglou.
McAtee can play a variety of roles in the final third and may be worth a punt considering he’s hardly featured for the Sky Blues this campaign. The 22-year-old is still young with plenty of resale value, so if Levy were to pursue a permanent deal, it would also make sense from a business perspective.
The former Sheffield United star’s price tag stands at around £25m, and Guardiola has previously branded McAtee a “special” player.
“I’m so happy for him, he’s a special player,” said Guardiola after McAtee’s hat-trick against Salford City in the FA Cup.
“Making a hat-trick is not easy. He started a bit flat, I would say, but after, he has an incredible sense in front of the goal. He has the right tempo, changed the rhythm to score and [I’m] really happy for him.”
Everton and Liverpool do battle in the Premier League this evening, with David Moyes looking to use his side’s three-match winning run to strike a cutting blow to his counterpart’s title challenge.
Though Bournemouth beat Everton in the FA Cup last weekend, the Blues have rediscovered themselves in the wake of Sean Dyche’s dismissal, dispatching Tottenham Hotspur (the 3-2 scoreline doesn’t reflect the manner of the win) and Leicester City at Goodison Park while narrowly beating Brighton on the South Coast.
Of course, Moyes will meet the sternest test of his second tenure at Everton in Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who will extend the gap at the top of the table to nine points with a win this evening.
This fixture was rescheduled in December after the whipping winds of Storm Darragh caused its cancellation. Everton are comfortably above the relegation zone, but a win here would propel the Toffees into mid-table talk.
It certainly won’t be easy though. Liverpool haven’t lost on the road in the Premier League this season and boast one of the most talented and balanced teams in Europe. Further to that point, Everton are nursing several injuries.

Everton team news
Everton are missing a range of first-team stars as they head into the Merseyside derby, with issues in attack. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja, Youssef Chermiti and Dwight McNeil are all ruled out for the foreseeable future.
Moreover, Orel Mangala’s season is over after sustaining a knee injury at Brighton at the end of January. The Belgium international’s loss is offset somewhat by new recruit Charly Alcaraz, who stood out on his debut at the weekend.
There are also issues in defence. Seamus Coleman is still unavailable and Vitalii Mykolenko is a doubt. This could force the 39-year-old Ashley Young into a left-back role, which is a problem unto itself given that Moyes has revealed that Nathan Patterson is sidelined with a hamstring tweak.
Ashley Young looks dejected for Everton
Everton will have to endure, soak up pressure and attack on the counter. Luckily, there’s one forward in particular who will be ready to inflict damage on Liverpool, perhaps in a similar way to one Andy Johnson.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Time for Everton's new Andy Johnson to hurt Liverpool
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp described Illiman Ndiaye as “dynamite” earlier in the campaign, with the winger’s pace and potency down the flanks causing all sorts of problems for opponents.
He was a bright spark through the Dyche-led months but has taken his game to another level now that Moyes is at the helm, striking home in all three of Everton’s recent Premier League victories.
Ndiaye, who can play across the frontline, isn’t just a goalscoring component either, with the 24-year-old averaging 2.5 dribbles and 6.3 successful duels per top-flight game this season, as per Sofascore, making a firm comment on his suitability for the looming fixture.
With such a dynamic and electric set of skills, the Senegal star could be the bane of Liverpool’s evening, perhaps proving to be Moyes’ next version of one-time Toffees sensation Andy Johnson.
In August 2006, Moyes signed Johnson from Crystal Palace for a club-record £8.5m fee, providing Everton with some fresh firepower up top.
He scored 17 goals and added eight assists across two Premier League campaigns for Everton, but the brace in a 3-0 victory over Liverpool in 2006/07 is undoubtedly the highlight of his time on Merseyside.
Johnson followed Tim Cahill’s opening goal with a cool finish of his own before half-time, capitalising on Jamie Carragher’s mistake. He would double his tally in injury time, adding insult to injury as he nodded in after Pepe Reina fumbled from Lee Carsley.
Ndiaye is more of a wide player than Johnson was but his explosive pace does offer similarities to the former Three Lions star, ranking among the top 8% of Premier League positional peers for successful take-ons per 90 this season, as per FBref.
Ndiaye’s crackling style could be the perfect way to sink a high-flying Liverpool side, leaping forward on the counter and handing Everton one final Derby Day memory before Goodison Park closes its gates.
Especially since Alcaraz is in the mix and could start his first Premier League game for Everton. The attacking midfielder showed against Bournemouth that he can drop deep and control play when called upon, but his combative energy could be vital in unsettling the Reds backline, also stretching Ryan Gravenberch, and creating openings for Ndiaye to shift through and into space.
Hailed as “one of the biggest talents” to have come from Argentina in recent years by scout Jacek Kulig, Alcaraz certainly brings a fresh dimension to Moyes’ midfield and perhaps could be the difference-maker, unlocking Ndiaye and ensuring that Liverpool do not leave Goodison with all the points.
Carlos Alcaraz
It’s doable. Liverpool are not infallible, have shown themselves to be susceptible to drilled and resistant opponents this season. Moyes has the tools in his locker to make it a historic evening for his Everton side, and with attacking outlets such as Ndiaye and Alcaraz on the field, the hosts could make it a tough evening indeed for their hostile guests.

Jake Lehmann made 73 for the home side but generally their batting struggled

Jackson Bird and Peter Siddle wound back the clock to help Tasmania run through South Australia for 227 on the first day of their Sheffield Shield match. After the Redbacks won the toss, Bird claimed South Australia’s first four wickets in the morning session before Siddle cleaned up after lunch, with both bowlers finishing with 4 for 51.Only Jake Lehmann and debutant Ben Manenti offered any real resistance for the hosts, with the latter attacking Siddle late in his innings.Manenti’s first day in the Sheffield Shield then reached another high just before stumps, when his a one-handed screamer at second slip allowed Harry Conway to remove Caleb Jewel and leave Tasmania 1 for 17 in reply. That was a rare highlight for the Redbacks on a tough Sunday at Adelaide Oval. Bird in particular had the ball moving, with the 35-year-old beating openers Henry Hunt and Jake Weatherald off the seam to have them caught behind.Former Test skipper Tim Paine caught well behind the stumps in his second game back, diving to his left to remove Weatherald when Bird had squared up the left-hander.Bird claimed Travis Head’s wicket in his next over for five when the left-hander inside-edged a yorker onto his stumps. The former Test quick also trapped Jake Carder lbw for 13, leaving SA struggling at 4-59.About the only man who looked in against the seamer was Lehmann. He brought up 50 just before tea when he pulled Bird for four amid three consecutive boundaries, after also taking a liking to Sam Rainbird earlier. The left-hander eventually fell victim to Siddle, who removed Lehmann and Wes Agar in successive balls in the final session. Siddle also got through Alex Carey’s bat and pad to bowl the Test wicketkeeper on 25, before gaining and edge from Conway to take his fourth victim. At that stage, it looked as though the Redbacks would likely be all out for less than 200, before Manenti got swinging later and hit Siddle for two powerful sixes over midwicket and mid-on.The son of Australia’s world champion men’s rugby sevens coach John Manenti, Ben helped the Redbacks put on 35 for the last wicket to give South Australia something to bowl at come Monday.

Hashan Tillakaratne, the former Sri Lanka captain, has been appointed as the national women’s team head coach for the next two years by the BCB. He will join the set-up in November, with the side starting their build-up for next February’s T20 World Cup in South Africa around that time.”We have spent a long time looking for a coach. Finally we found one,” Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, the BCB women’s wing chairman, said. “We have signed a two-year contract with Hashan Tillakaratne. He will join us in the first week of November.”Tillakaratne’s first assignment will be the tour of New Zealand in December, where the team will play three T20Is and three ODIs – the matches will be played between December 2 and 18.He has some experience coaching women’s teams, having worked with the Sri Lanka national team since July last year. He came on the BCB’s radar when he took Sri Lanka to the Asia Cup final earlier this month in Sylhet. BCB representatives reportedly contacted him and finalised the arrangement during the tournament, where Bangladesh, the defending Asia Cup champions, failed to get into the last four. Tillakaratne had at least another year left on his SLC contract. At the Asia Cup, Bangladesh were being coached by former cricketer Mahmud Emon. Tillakaratne will be Bangladesh’s first foreign coach since early 2020, when former India cricketer Anju Jain left the job.Tillakaratne played 83 Tests and 200 ODIs between 1986 and 2004, leading Sri Lanka in 11 Tests towards the end of his international career. In Tests, he scored 4545 runs at an average of 42.87, and he hit 3789 runs at an average of 29.60 in ODIs.After retirement, Tillakaratne has been an SLC selector and has performed various coaching roles with the men’s senior and Under-19 teams.
Thomas Tuchel was appointed as the new England manager last October following the resignation of Gareth Southgate after the nation lost in the final of the 2024 European Championship to Spain.
Southgate’s eight-year reign in charge of England saw them reach the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively, with their 2018 performance their best since 1990.
The Three Lions went even better at the Euros, reaching the final of Euro 2020 and 2024, although they lost to Italy and Spain on each occasion.
So close, yet so far for Southgate, and he left his post with his head held high. Now it is time for Tuchel to take England to the next level and win a major international competition for the first time since 1966.
10 wildcard players Thomas Tuchel could call up for England
The new era under the German begins in March, but could he spring a surprise in his first squad selection?
ByCharlie Smith Feb 13, 2025
The German manager has enjoyed plenty of success at club level. He led Borussia Dortmund to the German Cup in 2017 before winning two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain, whom he also led to their maiden Champions League final in 2020.
With Chelsea, the 51-year-old won the Champions League, defeating Manchester City in 2021, yet he was sacked just over a year later after some poor results.
His last club stint came with Bayern Munich, lasting 61 games before departing last summer, and now a new challenge awaits – one that is perhaps his biggest to date.
His first match in charge will be against Albania in the first qualifier for the 2026 World Cup, followed by a tie against Latvia just three days later. Winning both comfortably will be the expectation.

With a new manager comes a new backroom staff, with Tuchel appointing those who have worked alongside him in previous roles.
So who are among those joining Tuchel in the Three Lions dugout? We have taken a look into five members of Tuchel’s coaching staff ahead of this new era.
Anthony Barry Assistant coach
Anthony Barry
Anthony Barry was confirmed as Tuchel’s assistant last October, having developed a productive relationship with the 51-year-old in spells at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Making his breakthrough during three years as assistant manager at Wigan Athletic, Barry joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020, taking up the position of first-team coach at the Blues.
He had impressed Frank Lampard during coaching courses at St George’s Park and was retained by Tuchel upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge in January 2021.
Barry also worked under Roberto Martinez during his spells in charge of Belgium and Portugal before making the move to Bayern, where Tuchel was the head coach.
Having won the 2022/23 Bundesliga title together, Tuchel knows exactly what to expect from the Liverpool-born coach, who tends to specialise in set-pieces.
Henrique Hilario Goalkeeping coach
Henrique Hilario joined Chelsea back in 2006, going on to make a total of 39 appearances for the Blues during his playing career, although he was unable to usurp Petr Cech as No 1 goalkeeper.
He also won a single cap for Portugal along with winning the Champions League and a Premier League title with the Stamford Bridge side. Since retiring in 2014, Hilario moved into a coaching role at the club and remained their even since resigning last October.
Tuchel appointed the 49-year-old as his new goalkeeping coach following former coach Martyn Margetson stepping down in the wake of Southgate’s resignation.
Hilario was keen on splitting his commitments between Chelsea and the England setup, but the Premier League side were reluctant to do so. Therefore, he linked up with Tuchel on a full-time basis.
Who is Hilario? A look at England's new goalkeeping coach
Hilario is set to join Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions setup after many years at Chelsea as a player and coach.
ByBarney Lane Dec 9, 2024 Nicolas Mayer Performance coach
Nicolas Mayer is another member of staff joining Tuchel at England from Bayern Munich, having served as the performance coach at the Bavarian giants.
The Frenchman worked with Tuchel at PSG, helping the club win various domestic honours while reaching their first Champions League final, losing to Bayern 1-0 in August 2020.
These two stints working for the 51-year-old ensures that Mayer is well-placed to help Tuchel turn England from nearly-men into winners of a major international competition during his time in charge of the country.
James Melbourne Analyst
Tuchel wanted to keep his backroom team relatively small compared to those at club level.
James Melbourne clearly impressed the England manager during their time together at Chelsea, leaving the Blues to take on a full-time role with the national team.
He joined Chelsea in 2005 from Prozone and was the longest-serving member at the club prior to his departure. Melbourne worked under 14 permanent bosses at Stamford Bridge, including the likes of José Mourinho, Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte.
His role will include preparing and providing video and statistical analysis support to the senior England side, while also preparing detailed videos, information and reports on opponents.
Ashley Cole Coach
Ashley Cole was arguably one of the finest left-backs in Europe during his peak. Across spells at Arsenal and Chelsea, the defender won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a staggering seven FA Cups.
For England, he won 107 caps and featured at three World Cups and two European Championships for his country.
Last September, Cole joined the FA as a full-time national coach, a role that he shared alongside his work at Birmingham City.
This new role allowed him to focus his work across the England men’s player pathway, with Cole supporting Lee Carsley as an assistant during his temporary spell in charge of the national team during the latter part of 2024.
Despite Joleon Lescott departing at the end of the year, Cole will remain part of Tuchel’s coaching setup at England and the former left-back has plenty to offer.
