A clash of giants and a clash of philosophies, at the 100,000-seater MCG in a World Cup

Kumble: ‘India need to adapt to conditions but can’t be conservative’

Big pictureIndia-Pakistan matches are rare and usually only found in global tournaments, and this combination of scarcity and high stakes often brings out the worst in both sets of fans. And, over recent years, the pre-match hysteria has often given way to one-sided anticlimaxes on the field. Lukewarm blowouts giving way to jingoistic gloating and poisonous finger-pointing – do we really need India-Pakistan cricket if is what it is defined by?Related

Weather improves, but India ready for shortened game too

'They have won us enough matches' – Babar on middle order

Over a pair of meetings at the Asia Cup just over a month ago, however, the two teams reminded everyone of the electricity their cricketing collisions can generate. Both games were seesawing tactical battles that went down to the wire, with India winning the first with two balls remaining and Pakistan the second with one ball to spare. It was clear then that these were two excellent T20 sides with contrasting strengths that aligned broadly with national stereotypes which had not always been accurate previously. On one side was a formidable batting unit with holes all over its bowling thanks to the absence of one key superstar; on the other a conservative top order that set its sights on par totals, confident in the ability of its high-quality, high-pace attack to defend them.A clash of cricketing giants, and a clash of cricketing philosophies. What more could you ask for? Well, a World Cup setting, perhaps. And maybe a neutral venue that puts these philosophies to their stiffest test.2:37

Rohit Sharma: ‘We are in a better position than the last T20 World Cup’

We have lucked out then, because Sunday will contain all these ingredients. Where better than Australia for the paciest attack in the T20I world to come up against some of the best players of fast bowling? Where better than the MCG and its 100,000-plus capacity for this to happen?Where better, indeed, but for one little hitch; let’s just hope the rain stays away.Form guideIndia LWWWW (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
Pakistan WWLWWIn the spotlightHe’s returning from a long injury layoff, but if you’ve watched a clip of the Rahmanullah Gurbaz ball, you’ll know Shaheen Shah Afridi is well and truly back. Afridi’s new-ball burst was the most influential performance in Pakistan’s victory over India at last year’s T20 World Cup, and how India perform could well hinge on how little damage they allow him to inflict during the powerplay.18:37

Shaheen Shah Afridi: the rise of the falcon

Suryakumar Yadav is arguably the best T20 batter in the world at the moment, but he has not had much of a chance yet to show what he’s capable of in a World Cup game, having only batted three times – twice in the closing stages of small chases – at last year’s tournament. Getting him out early could be key to Pakistan doing well. He is comfortable against pace and spin, and he hits boundaries all around the ground, as capable of punching short-of-a-length balls with a vertical bat as he is of sweeping and slicing full-length balls along and behind square.Team newsIndia will have to make two big calls regarding the composition of their bowling attack. One is picking three out of their four specialist pace options. Then there is the issue of spin. Five out of Pakistan’s notional top-six are likely to be right-hand batters, but they often use Mohammad Nawaz as a floater to break that pattern. Should India pick their offspinner R Ashwin, then, or go with their preferred spin pair against right-hand-heavy teams?India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 KL Rahul, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Harshal Patel/Mohammed Shami, 9 Yuzvendra Chahal/R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Arshdeep SinghPakistan have five terrific fast-bowling options, but they can probably pick only three of them. Afridi and Haris Rauf are certainties, with Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim most likely contesting for the one other slot. Shan Masood, meanwhile, has been declared fit to play, a day after suffering a blow to his head during a training session. Fakhar Zaman, however, is unavailable, with Pakistan keeping a close eye on his recovery from a knee injury.Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Shan Masood, 4 Haider Ali, 5 Iftikhar Ahmed, 6 Asif Ali, 7 Mohammad Nawaz, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Naseem Shah, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris Rauf1:13

India sweat it out ahead of T20 World Cup opener

Pitch and conditionsFirst, the bad news. It may rain on Sunday, though there’s a bit of encouraging news on that front. Now for the good news. The last three India-Pakistan T20Is have all been played in Dubai, a venue where the toss influences results disproportionately, and have all been won by the chasing side. Chasing teams have won each of the last five completed T20Is at the MCG as well, but that could simply be a quirk of probability, because, as our superlative guide to the venues at this World Cup tells us, chasing teams have a 50% win record in at this ground since the start of 2020.This suggests the toss may not be quite so crucial, though you would probably still expect the team winning it to chase. Also expect a lot of hard-length bowling, with bowlers encouraging batters to hit towards the long square boundaries and keeping them away from the relatively short straight boundaries.1:20

What do Rohit and Babar talk about when they meet?

Stats and trivia There’s one argument for India picking Ashwin despite the right-hand-heavy nature of Pakistan’s top six. In T20Is this year, Babar Azam (strike rate 114.28) and Mohammad Rizwan (112.32) haven’t scored particularly quickly against offspin, and the two openers often bat through a significant chunk of Pakistan’s innings. Babar has also been dismissed four times by offspinners in 35 balls. Among bowlers to have sent down at least ten overs at the death (17-20) in Full-Member-vs-Full-Member T20Is this year, Arshdeep (8.30) and Haris (8.35) have the joint-second-best and fourth-best economy rates. Only Kane Richardson (8.00) and Fazalhaq Farooqi (8.30) sit above them. Dinesh Karthik is set to feature in a T20 World Cup match for the first time in more than 12 years. His last appearance was against Sri Lanka in St Lucia during the 2010 tournament. Karthik and Rohit Sharma were part of India’s squad at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, in which no member of Pakistan’s current squad had featured. 1:02

India, Pakistan fans in Melbourne get ready for big game

Quotes”Speaking of the game against Australia, the warm-up game, that was always the plan. We know he’s very good with the new ball, so we just wanted to give him a bit of a challenge to come and bowl at the death, and see what he can do. And most importantly his body was something we had to look at, because he’s just recovered from Covid, and we wanted to give him enough time. We wanted to play him in the next warm-up game, full 20 overs, but unfortunately it got washed off, and we didn’t get a chance to play him there, but in terms of preparation, I think he’s very well prepared. He’s been training with the team for a while now. He came to Brisbane quite early, and had a few sessions with the entire team. In terms of his readiness I think he’s very much ready. It’s just about going out and executing what Shami is known for.”
“Off the field whenever we meet, we meet each other respectfully. That is sportsman spirit. Not just with India, but we bond well with all other teams. Whatever the situation on the field, everyone gives 100% for their country, we do the same. But off the field, we meet each other respectfully.”

Paulinho segue recuperação no ligamento cruzado anterior do joelho esquerdo e deve perder toda a temporada.

49ers could seal a dream first Rangers signing in £4m SPFL starlet

One topic is dominating the news surrounding Glasgow Rangers at the moment and that is the rumours of a potential takeover by Paraag Marathe – the man behind NFL team the San Francisco 49ers.

Investment is desperately needed at Ibrox, even more so after the events of the current season, with Philippe Clement overseeing a dismal campaign that has most recently delivered a shock Scottish Cup defeat to Championship side Queen’s Park.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

While any potential takeover won’t occur for a while yet, according to journalist Chris Jack of the Rangers Review, discussions between 49ers Enterprises and key shareholders have been ongoing for several months, which is promising indeed.

Dave King is the major shareholder at Rangers, owning a stake of 12.96%, followed by Douglas Park and George Taylor, who both have stakes of over 10%.

What Rangers can expect from 49ers takeover

The 49ers are one of the best-run franchises in the NFL. The 49ers Enterprise is currently valued at a staggering $5.97b, ranking them as the 11th most valuable sports empire in the world.

The 49ers are arguably one of the best-run NFL teams in America. Over the previous ten years, they have won three Divisional Championships (2019, 2022, and 2023) while also reaching the Superbowl on two occasions (2019 and 2023).

The 49ers bought a 15% stake in Leeds United back in 2018, which rose to 44% by 2021. Although they were relegated at the end of the 2022/23 season, Leeds look set to make a return to the Premier League this term.

There is talk of expansion at Elland Road. Should Marathe secure the takeover of Rangers, this could benefit the club in the long run.

One area that will be on everyone’s minds at the club, from supporters to those on the current board, is finances. While a financial war chest may not be available straight away, will there be funds for the manager to bolster his side this summer and beyond?

If so, there are a few players that should be brought to Ibrox. Notably, Lennon Miller.

Rangers were linked with Lennon Miller

It is no secret that Rangers have shown interest in Miller over the previous few months. According to the Glasgow Times during the winter transfer window, both the Gers and Celtic were showing plenty of interest in the Motherwell youngster.

The teenager has made waves at the club since making his debut in 2022, aged just 16 years and 6 days in the League Cup. Miller has enjoyed a meteoric rise ever since.

It isn’t just the Old Firm who are keen on securing his services either. Last month, Serie A side Udinese had a bid of around £2.5m rejected by the Steelmen, who are in no mood to let their prized asset depart on the cheap.

Indeed, the Premiership club value Miller at £4m, which could well be in range for the Light Blues this summer, especially if the potential takeover is done and dusted by then.

Clement – if he is still in a job by then – should be doing everything he can to land the midfielder ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Once he leaves Motherwell for new pastures, if it is not for Rangers, then the club will have no chance of signing him in the future.

Lennon Miller’s season in numbers

Watching Miller play and dominate games, it is hard to believe he is still only 18 years old. The midfielder has featured 27 times for Motherwell this season, scoring four goals while registering six assists in all competitions.

Transfer Focus

Capable of playing either in a more advanced role behind the striker, or slightly defensive in front of the back four, Miller has all the tools to be a regular for Rangers or Celtic, no doubt about that.

In the top flight, the youngster averages 1.5 shots per game, along with creating eight big chances, averaging 2.1 key passes per game and succeeding with 52% of his dribble attempts, proving just how effective he can be when bursting into the final third.

Defensively, Miller has also sparkled for the Steelmen. He has averaged 1.9 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in the Premiership. Furthermore, the Scot wins an impressive 5.9 total duels per game – a success rate of 53% – while recovering 6.6 balls per game.

James McFadden, himself one a teenage prodigy at Motherwell, lauded plenty of praise for Miller during an interview he gave with Open Goal late last year, dubbing the youngster as “ridiculous” due to his ability and future potential.

He could be a dream first signing for the 49ers should a move materialise in the summer. That is almost a certainty.

Where Lennon Miller would fit in at Rangers

One of the strongest areas in the current Rangers side is midfield. Clement can call upon Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, Connor Barron, and Bailey Rice, while Dundee starlet Lyall Cameron will join the Gers at the end of the season.

As you can see, this area is fairly stacked with talent, but Miller’s ability to play in a few different positions could give Clement a massive boost.

This could see him slot into a number ten role should the opportunity arise, or perhaps a more defensive depending on the opposition.

If Miller keeps performing the way he has been over the previous 12 months, he could become a star at Rangers.

Of course, this might just be a stepping stone for a move elsewhere, either abroad or to the Premier League, but the Ibrox side would surely rake in a significant profit on their initial investment.

The rumours of a reported takeover by the 49ers look to have given the majority of the fanbase a temporary boost, but until the deal is signed, sealed, and delivered, nothing can be assumed.

If they approach it in the right way, this could see Rangers enter a new era beginning the 2025/26 campaign.

Let us just hope it is more successful than the current one.

Sheffield United’s "super signing" is now looking like Brewster 2.0

Heading into Monday night’s blockbuster contest with Leeds United in the Championship, Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United had picked up four league victories on the trot in February.

That purple patch of form would, unfortunately, come to a crashing halt at the hands of Daniel Farke’s Whites, however, with a late flurry of strikes gifting the league leaders a monumental 3-1 win.

It ended up being a night where none of Wilder’s substitutions really worked, with Rhian Brewster left rooted on the bench throughout despite somewhat turning around his fortunes in South Yorkshire recently.

Brewster's up-and-down time at United

Fresh off being a goalscoring menace for the Liverpool U21s, United would push the boat out to land Brewster’s signature back in 2020.

The now 24-year-old would bag a blistering 13 strikes and pick up ten assists from 28 clashes in that Reds age bracket, but the Blades would still arguably pay way over the odds to land the deadly forward with a fee around the £23.5m region winning his services.

Since then, the ex-Anfield wonderkid has struggled to be consistent at Bramall Lane, whether that is by firing home enough goals or just being able to put together a string of fixtures without falling victim to the treatment room.

In total, Brewster has only picked up a lowly seven goals and three assists from 106 Blades games, although four of those goal contributions have come under Wilder’s wing this unfolding campaign.

Regardless of this slight upturn in form, Brewster will still be considered a flop purchase just based on his extortionate £23.5m price tag, with a worry festering at Bramall Lane now that this other big buy will follow in his footsteps.

Wilder may now have next Brewster

Glancing at the promotion-chasing side’s winter transfer business is enough to show you how seriously Wilder and Co want to immediately return back to the Premier League, with statement signings such as Ben Brereton Diaz and Hamza Choudhury entering through the door on loan from top-flight clubs.

But, there was one permanent buy that really caught the eye in the EFL, with Tom Cannon exiting parent employers Leicester City – off the back of a goal-laden loan stint at Stoke City – to relocate to the Blades for a whopping £10m.

Lauded as a “super signing” for the club at the time by Wilder, already the alarm bells might well be ringing from an outsider looking in with the deal baring some similarities to Brewster’s cursed switch.

After all, Cannon was also regularly firing home goals when starring in Everton youth circles before his big break elsewhere, with a stunning 51 strikes picked up in total playing for both the U18s and U21s.

But, away from his blistering form for the Potters earlier this season, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the Republic of Ireland international in the men’s game, with blanks regularly fired on his end for Wilder’s men since making the £10m move a reality.

Injury issues haven’t helped his cause, but his showing off the bench against Leeds last time out really wouldn’t have got the United masses out of their seats, having registered just eight unmemorable touches of the ball from a 31-minute stint on the pitch.

Presumably substituted on to put the game beyond doubt, the striker – once lauded as “outstanding” by ex-Hull City boss Liam Rosenior – simply faded into the background, with anxiety present that the 22-year-old could go down as a transfer misfire instead of a success.

Much like they’ve done with Brewster, however, the second-tier side will remain patient with Cannon, but his goalless showings will still be a major cause for concern.

They secured one of the biggest names available in Trent Boult after making a bid on Rashid Khan. But they will lose Boult to the ILT20 in the UAE midway through the tournament. They then retained Joe Clarke who had an excellent season for them last year. Clarke is likely to be available for the full season and gives them a badly needed wicketkeeping option given they do not have another specialist keeper in the squad. They also added another skillful left-arm quick with vast T20 experience in Luke Wood. The Lancashire and Trent Rockets left-arm seamer was part of England’s World Cup-winning squad but didn’t play in the tournament. He did make his ODI debut against Australia in Adelaide just after the World Cup.Related

Last season: Sixth Stars were affected by Covid more than any other team last season. They were bowled out for 61 on the opening night of the season against Sydney Sixers but the worst was yet to come. Their season was completely derailed when nearly the entire squad and coaching staff contracted Covid-19 at the same time. They were forced to field a team nearly fully comprising of ring-ins against Perth Scorchers just after New Year, with a stand-in coaching staff also required after David Hussey and his colleagues were also forced into quarantine. They lost back-to-back games against Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades, who won just three games for the season which all but ended their finals hopes. They fielded 26 players for the season, including a host of players plucked from grade cricket at short notice. They will hope for a complete reset this year.International impact The Stars don’t have any players away on international duty but their biggest superstar, and longtime captain, Glenn Maxwell is set to miss the entire season after breaking his leg in November. Boult is available for Stars first eight games. The last game he is available for is against Sydney Sixers on January 6. Wood and Clarke are available for the entire season. Australia don’t have any limited-overs commitments during the BBL with Zampa and Stoinis available all season.Key player Marcus Stoinis looms as the most important player for Stars this season. He played just eight games last summer due to a combination of Covid and a side strain that he suffered in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The last time Stars made the final in 2019-20 Stoinis made a BBL record 705 runs in 17 games with a hundred and six half-centuries. In two seasons since he has only passed 50 three times despite taking his game to another level in international T20 cricket. The injury to Maxwell also means the Stars lose a valuable bowling option who bats in the top six, which changes the balance of the side. Stoinis’ bowling experience will be needed in all three phases.Young player to watch There aren’t a lot of young players that jump out as potential starters on the Stars list but one player to keep an eye on could be Campbell Kellaway. The 20-year-old just made 81 in his second Sheffield Shield game for Victoria and followed that with an unbeaten century for Cricket Australia XI against a South Africa Test attack. He hasn’t got a lot of T20 experience even at premier cricket level for his club side Melbourne, but he did smash 72 off 49 in a Victoria premier T20 game last summer. Stars also don’t have a lot of left-handers in their batting line-up. He is one that could be given an opportunity.

Cummins calls for third umpire catch changes

Three times at the SCG the TV official ruled that slip catches hadn’t carried

Pat Cummins says there has to be a better way for the third umpire to adjudicate on catches after Richard Kettleborough was forced to make three contentious decisions during the third Test.Sydney match umpires lodged reviews for three catches taken low to the ground in the slips at the SCG. On each occasion, third umpire Kettleborough found evidence the ball had touched the ground before the fielder was able to control it. Consequently, none of the catches were given.Cummins’ team-mates Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Hazlewood previously suggested the first step to changing the way such catches were officiated would be to scrap the on-field umpire’s soft signal, given the third umpire overturned it on two of the three occasions, although that decision now only becomes a factor if technology fails or is unavailable for the third umpire.Related

“I don’t really know the answers but there has to be a way to try and improve it somehow,” Cummins said after the Test against South Africa ended in a draw. “As it currently stands, it’s really hard to give a batter out. If there’s any kind of benefit of the doubt, it goes the batter’s way.”I think with a couple of camera angles really slowed down, it’s pretty hard to not find doubt somewhere. I do feel for Ketts a little bit up there.”In making a decision, the third umpire only has access to footage from the host broadcaster, Fox Sports and not from Seven Network cameras.”Maybe there’s more cameras we can use down the track,” Cummins said.South Africa captain Dean Elgar was visibly frustrated when his side was on the receiving end of the first non-catch call but at stumps said he was pleased the umpires remained consistent throughout the match.”The way the umpires conducted the three was pretty good. I think it was brilliant,” he said. “Once you’ve set the bar with the first one, you can’t really budge much from there.”Those things are always going to be a grey area, some guys will say out, some guys will say not out. At the end of the day, their decision is final and as players we respect that.”
