Litton Das: Test experience gives us advantage over Afghanistan

Both captains played down the significance of Rashid Khan’s absence, with the Afghan spinner being rested

Bangladesh captain Litton Das believes their experience will give them the edge over Afghanistan in the one-off Test in Dhaka that begins on Wednesday. Litton is standing in for the regular captain Shakib Al Hasan who is out with a finger injury. His opposite number, Hashmatullah Shahidi, is also making his captaincy debut after being appointed two years ago.The other similarity between the two captains is the absence of their best bowler, respectively, from their attacks. While Shakib is out for a few weeks with the injury, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has rested Rashid Khan “to prioritize his long-term fitness”. Litton played down Rashid’s absence although the legspinner took 11 wickets in the only Test between the two sides four years ago. He said that Bangladesh’s maturity in Tests will keep them ahead of the visitors.”We will take them as seriously as we would have done with Rashid in their team,” Litton said. “Our last Test was in April after which we played a white-ball series. We play a lot of Tests, which gives us the advantage over them. It gives us a better level of maturity in this format. We don’t have a great idea about them. They play a lot of ODIs and T20s, which makes it hard to judge them in Tests. We have a plan in our mind, and if we can execute it, we will get a good result.”Related

Rashid Khan rested for Afghanistan's one-off Test against Bangladesh

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said that they will miss Rashid, but they have options in both the pace and spin departments to make up for his absence. He said that legspinner Izharulhaq Naveed, who impressed during last season’s Big Bash League, could step up”It will be challenging. We all know that Rashid is one of the main bowler in our team. He did very well in the past in Test matches. Still we have another option like wristspinners and they will perform well .”He (Izharulhaq) played good cricket. He played in the Big Bash. T20 cricket is different. He did very good in the past in age-group cricket also and so he will be one of the biggest star in future for Afghanistan.”I think both Shakib and Rashid are rested. We have good quality players and we have good quality players, and other options to win the game for us and I think that would be the point,” said Shahidi. He was also confident that even if Mirpur dished out a greenish pitch, Afghanistan had the pace firepower to take advantage of it. “I think we saw the pitch today and they made it green and that’s fine for us because we have good seamers and we have good spinning options as well so we will be thinking of our own strength and what we have and what we have to work and we are ready for everything,” said Shahidi.Litton countered the point by saying that they wanted to challenge themselves on a green wicket in Mirpur, having played on raging turners here for most of its existence. “Mirpur has had a turning wicket for most of the time. We want to challenge ourselves on a grassy pitch. We want to see how we can survive here and play a long innings.”It is quite normal to want to play on an even wicket. We also have a quality pace attack. You would need five bowlers on such a wicket too. This is what I prefer,” said Litton. He will be Bangladesh’s 12th Test captain and although it is a stopgap option, Litton believes that he has been helping out in the field as a wicketkeeper for quite some time. Litton made 800 runs last year, only the third Bangladeshi to reach that landmark in a calendar year in Tests. But there’s still some concern about his conversion rate.”I have been doing this in the field for a long time, so it is not really a major challenge. I will have to run things in the field. There’s a ‘captain’ added next to my name. As for my batting, it is important to have the focus. It helps you read the game better. When I get into that mindset, I want to play a big innings,” he said.As for Afghanistan’s batting, Shahidi has to bank on memory, and recent white-ball form. “We have batsmen that we can trust. They did well in the past. We also have someone who played good cricket in ODIs recently – Ibrahim Zadran. Rahmat Shah is doing well. I scored a double-hundred in the last Test against Zimbabwe.”We have other promising batsmen also and I believe our batsmen will do very good and we will keep improving day by day and match by match in batting department.”

Ambati Rayudu has withdrawn from the inaugural edition of USA’s Major League Cricket, where he was to represent Texas Super Kings. This follows the BCCI’s proposal to introduce a year-long cooling-off period for retired players before they can participate in overseas T20 leagues. The proposal, put forward at Apex Council meeting in Mumbai yesterday, will be ratified at the BCCI’s AGM in September. The BCCI is believed to be concerned about the possibility of mass retirements by domestic players – all of whom are without contracts – to pursue opportunities elsewhere.”We’ll come out with a policy to prevent the trend of pre-determined retirement,” secretary Jay Shah said after the Apex Council meeting. “The office bearers will make a policy and send it back for approval.”Related

Rayudu announced his retirement ahead of Chennai Super Kings’ fifth IPL triumph, in Ahmedabad in May. At the time, Rayudu, who had previously retired only to make a comeback, had promised “no U-turn”.Two weeks later, he was named along with a number of other present and former Super Kings players such as Faf du Plessis, Devon Conway and Mitchell Santner, as signings for the Texas franchise, which is also run by N Srinivasan’s India Cements that also owns Chennai Super Kings. The Texas team will be coached by Stephen Fleming with Eric Simons and Albie Morkel as assistants coaches. As things stand, Indian players can feature in overseas T20 leagues only if they are retired from international cricket and BCCI-run tournaments such as the IPL. Unmukt Chand, the former India Under-19 World Cup winner, is an example of a player who left Indian cricket to pursue opportunities overseas.Chand announced his decision in 2021, aged 28. Since then, he has featured in the Big Bash League for Melbourne Renegades and Bangladesh Premier League for Chattogram Challengers.MLC 2023 is a six-team event, scheduled from July 13 to 30. Super Kings will play the tournament opener against Los Angeles Knight Riders.

Tom Curran rescues Oval Invincibles to deliver Men's Hundred glory

Record stand with Neesham turns tables on Originals after early slump to 34 for 5

Oval Invincibles 161 for 5 (Curran 67*, Neesham 57*) beat Manchester Originals 147 for 6 (Holden 37, Jacks 2-11) by 14 runsTom Curran brought men’s Hundred glory to south London with a virtuoso all-round performance as Oval Invincibles fought back from the brink to secure their first men’s Hundred title with a 14-run victory over Manchester Originals.Curran struck 67 not out off 34 balls – his highest score of the competition – as part of an innings-saving stand of 127 off 65 with Jimmy Neesham, who himself struck 57 off 33. The importance of their partnership, the biggest in the history of the men’s competition, could not be understated, coming as it did from 34 for 5 after Jos Buttler had inserted Invincibles upon winning the toss.Their exploits left Originals needing 162 to avenge their defeat in 2022’s final, and whatever regrets they might have had at the halfway stage would have been short-lived given their performance in Saturday night’s Eliminator. After toppling a far more daunting 197 by seven wickets with three balls to spare against Southern Brave, this was a more manageable peak to scale.Unfortunately for Originals, when their previous night’s heroes of Phil Salt (who had set up that chase with 47 from 17 balls) and Buttler (who had finished it with an unbeaten 82 from 46) managed just 25 and 11 respectively, the game was as good as done.Fittingly, it was Tom Curran who made the first breakthrough, extracting Salt at the end of the powerplay to cement his hold on the Match Hero award with figures of 1 for 25 from 20 deliveries. Barring a 22-ball stand of 42 between Jamie Overton and Max Holden, Invincibles rarely doubted thereafter that the trophy would be headed south of the river. It’s worth noting the oldest Curran had started the summer operating solely as a batter for Surrey in the Vitality Blast on account of injuries restricting his bowling. And while his average of 17.61 had been nothing to write home about, 229 runs at a strike-rate of 143.12 spoke of a promise that had grown into something tangible in the course of the Hundred prior this blitz. He finishes Invincibles’ campaign with 175 runs at a strike rate of 175.The scene when he arrived was one of top-order disarray. Ducks for Jason Roy and Sam Curran in consecutive deliveries (three and golden, respectively), a run-a-ball 5 from emergency overseas Paul Stirling, a leg-side strangle of skipper Sam Billings and then 15 off 15 from the usually devastating Will Jacks had the group-stage leaders reeling. Then came the outlandish fightback.Neesham set the pace, with a brace of fours in three deliveries off the slingy right-arm of Zaman Khan before evoking memories of his brutal strike in the World Cup Final Super Over when flicking left-arm spinner Tom Hartley into the stands under Old Father Time for his one and only six. Curran, however, was the Nitrous Oxide, accelerating this stand with five spaced-out sixes among nine boundaries.Related

He raced to 36 off 18, clearing the leg-side boundary three times off Paul Walter, Josh Little and Jamie Overton. His fourth six was the most extraordinary, off the 82nd delivery of the night, as he uppercut Little over deep third to bring up a 26-ball half-century. HIs last, off the final ball of the innings, sent Zaman back over his head as he missed his yorker by inches to provide the exclamation point on a match-winning knock.Knowing that the powerplay was Originals’ chance to get back ahead of the game, Salt was typically raucous out of the gate for his team, making 25 from 15 as the chasers found themselves on 33 for no loss, needing a further 129 from 80. Two balls later, however, Salt returned to the pavilion after skewing a length ball from Tom Curran to younger brother Sam, who tracked it from mid-off to complete the dismissal. Just 12 deliveries later, Buttler joined him after a subdued 11 off 15, leaving his side on 44 for 2.It was left-arm spinner Danny Briggs who snared the big fish – no mean feat on his first appearance in the tournament. A tempter from around the wicket was charged and missed, with Buttler turning around just in time to see the bails light up after his middle stump had been knocked back.Buttler was the first of three wickets to fall to spin in nine deliveries as Originals circled the drain. Wayne Madsen had just reversed Nathan Sowter for four when he under-edged onto his own stumps, and Sowter was then in the game at deep midwicket, relaying a catch back to himself as Laurie Evans attempted to deposit Will Jacks into the Tavern Stand. For a moment it looked as though Evans would survive as replays showed Sowter’s foot was in contact with the sponge, but not before he had already released the ball, which he then reclaimed with both feet on the right side of the boundary. At the other end, Max Holden was valiantly raging against the squeeze, taking Sam Curran over long-on for six, before swiping consecutive fours off Sowter to the leg side and through cover after the dangerous Paul Walter had been castled by Jacks. When 15 runs were taken off Gus Atkinson’s third set – Holden using his pace to edge over third and scoop over fine leg – the ask of 59 off 25 looked just about doable, particularly with Overton’s propensity to clear the ropes. But after Tom Curran had kept the pair to eight from balls 76 to 80, Sam struck the pads of a desperate Holden heaving across the line. Umpire Alex Wharf gave it not out, but Billings reviewed on the bowler’s insistence and was rewarded with an overturned decision and Holden departed for 37.With 44 required from 15, Overton and Hartley could only find three more boundaries. When Sam Curran, with 23 to defend from the final five, restricted Overton to twos from the first two deliveries, the celebrations could begin in earnest. The last delivery was a yorker, dug out by Hartley towards long-off. By the time he had reached the striker’s end for a cursory single, more meaningful celebrations had begun among those in turquoise on the field, in the dugout and dotted throughout the stands.Having missed out on the knockout stages in the first two season, Oval Invincibles are 2023’s men’s Hundred champions.

Matthews 132 shapes world record West Indies chase

Phoebe Litchfield had earlier slammed the joint-fastest fifty in women’s T20Is to power Australia to 212, but West Indies overhauled that target with a ball to spare

Inspired by their captain Hayley Matthews and supported by Stafanie Taylor, West Indies produced a stunning world-record T20I chase to sink Australia at North Sydney Oval. After the first innings, it appeared Phoebe Litchfield would be the performance talked about as she equaled the record for the fastest fifty in women’s T20Is off 18 balls, but that was put well in the shade.Matthews, who was left stranded on 99 in the opening match of the series, surged to a 53-ball century this time and carried her team to the brink when she finally fell for a magnificent 132 off 64 balls having taken four consecutive boundaries off Jess Jonassen in the penultimate over.It left West Indies needing 9 off 7 deliveries which Shemaine Campbelle and Chinelle Henry were able to scamper in the final over against Ash Gardner with a ball to spare when Australia had to have an extra fielder inside the ring due to a slow over-rate.Taylor had overcome a sluggish start to play a vital hand with 59 off 41 balls in a stand of 174 in 14 overs with Matthews. Australia’s bowlers had no answers and they paid the price for dropping Matthews twice, on 30 and 87. Their tactics will also have to be called into question with Matthews repeatedly exploiting an unprotected off-side boundary. She scored 19 off her 25 boundaries on the off side with 77 runs coming from cover drives and in all 110 of her runs came in fours and sixes.Overall, it was the highest scoring women’s T20I in history with 425 runs and Matthews collected her seven consecutive player-of-the-match award.West Indies had made the perfect start to the game when Alyssa Healy fell first ball, spectacularly caught at backward point by Campbelle and Australia were 7 for 2 when Tahila McGrath was bowled by an excellent delivery from Matthews. From there, however, the home side rebuilt through a stand of 70 between Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry before two more wickets fell in quick succession to leave them 89 for 4 when Litchfield walked in.There had been some surprise when she was preferred to Grace Harris at No. 6 for this series, but Australia have wanted to try a left hander in that position. It will be difficult to shift her now. She collected her first six from her second delivery when she advanced at Aaliyah Alleyne and pulled over deep backward square. That was followed by consecutive sixes off Henry, the second as she advanced and drove over long-off.For a little while she lost the strike as Georgia Wareham took over with her own powerful strokeplay, but Litchfield found the boundary from five of her next six deliveries with her fifth six equaling the record.A brutal stand of 66 off 22 balls between Litchfield and Georgia Wareham, who made 32 off 13, enable the home side to put on a power packed finish that produced 88 runs from the last five overs – a record for where complete data is available. Astonishingly, it ended up coming in a losing cause.
