Chelsea open talks for "new attacking priority" with near-£40m deal possible

Chelsea have a “new attacking priority” for manager Enzo Maresca as talks begin with his club, and it is believed the man in question is also very keen on joining.

Maresca recently pinpointed the attack as his next main area of improvement, regardless of their near-£150 million triple deal for Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro, mainly due to Chelsea’s struggles against the low block last term (Simon Phillips).

It’s practically indisputable that Maresca’s side will come up against sides set up to defend that way time and time again next season.

Their lower-profile Premier League opponents are now perhaps even more wary of Chelsea’s attacking talent, following impressive Club World Cup and Conference League triumphs in the last few months, which sent a real statement of intent to the rest of England that they could challenge for the title next season.

Taking this into account, Chelsea are believed to be in the market for another central attacking midfielder, even amid their need to trim Maresca’s bloated squad after a recent settlement with UEFA (Kaveh Solhekol).

Chelsea held talks with Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze last week in their pursuit of more final-third creativity, but according to more recent reports, RB Leipzig sensation Xavi Simons is now moving ahead of him in the transfer target pecking order.

Xavi Simons celebrates

The Netherlands international is prepared to leave Leipzig this summer, despite only just joining the Germans on a permanent deal in January after one and a half seasons on loan, and super agent Ali Barat is expected to help Simons facilitate a move away.

As per Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea are the most concrete option for him, and talks have already been held with the player’s representatives amid “serious” interest from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea open talks with RB Leipzig over signing Xavi Simons

Now, reporter Simon Phillips has a pretty encouraging update on the situation, sharing further news via his Substack.

RB Leipzig'sXaviSimonsreacts after the match

Chelsea have now opened club-to-club talks with Leipzig, which happened on Monday this week, and the 22-year-old is apparently pretty eager to join Maresca’s side, who’ve already secured the player ‘buy-in’.

What’s more, despite reports to the contrary that he’s valued at around £65 million, BlueCo could actually end up striking a deal for Simons closer to the £40 million mark.

“SPTC sources are now hearing that Chelsea opened talks with RB Leipzig regarding signing Simons on Monday this week,” wrote Phillips.

“Talks on the player side have already happened and Chelsea have the player buy in. As we reported earlier this week, Simons is keen on joining Chelsea in more of our news that has since been backed up by other big sources out there now.

Netherlands'XaviSimonscelebrates scoring their third goal

“Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, and now Chelsea are speaking to the Bundesliga to understand what sort of fee they will be looking for. We have not yet heard their asking price for Simons, but it is not expected to be as high as what has been reported out there at the moment, which is £65m. We expect it to be under £50m and perhaps even closer to £40m. Let’s see after these talks how much it will cost for Chelsea to sign Simons.”

Simons has been a revelation at Leipzig over the past two seasons – bagging 21 goals and 23 assists in total for them – and this form even prompted the club to make him their highest-ever paid player.

Unlike Eze (27), the former PSG starlet has more time on his side as well, with his age suiting BlueCo’s typical transfer policy down to the ground.

SRH to retain Travis Head and Nitish Reddy as well ahead of IPL mega auction

Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins and Abhishek Sharma were the first three capped players set to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad

Nagraj Gollapudi30-Oct-20243:26

Four big questions from SRH’s retentions

Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy are set to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad as their final two capped retained players ahead of the 2025 IPL auction. ESPNcricinfo has learned Head is likely to be be retained for INR 14 crore while Reddy is set to get INR 6 crore. With these two signings, SRH will have completed their quota of five capped retained players before the auction, securing the core group that led them to the IPL 2024 final, and will lose INR 75 crore from their purse of INR 120 crore. ESPNcricinfo reported earlier SRH were set to retain Heinrich Klaasen (INR 23 crore), Pat Cummins (INR 18 crore) and Abhishek Sharma (14 crore). They can now use a right-to-match card to buy back only one of their uncapped players at the auction.October 31 is also the deadline by which the ten franchises have to submit their list of retained players to the IPL. The IPL franchises have been allowed to retain up to six players ahead of the mega auction before the 2025 season, of which a maximum of five can be capped internationals and two can be uncapped. While the IPL has set minimum deductions from the auction purse for each player retained – INR 18 crore for the first player, INR 14 crore for the second, INR 11 crore for the third, INR 18 crore for the fourth, and INR 14 crore for the fifth – the franchises are free to pay more than those amounts to their retained players.Cummins will continue to captain SRH after he, along with the coaching staff led by Daniel Vettori, led them to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.If Klaasen’s price tag, which is INR 5 crore more than the IPL’s slab of INR 18 crore for the first retained player, was a surprise, the amount agreed with Head is likely to raise further eyebrows.Head had his breakthrough season in the IPL with SRH in 2024, smashing 567 runs at a strike rate of 191.55 at the top of the order. In 2024, he also became only the second T20 batter to score 1000-plus runs at a strike rate of more than 175 and average of more than 40 in a year.Related

KL Rahul unlikely to stay with LSG; set for mega auction

LSG set to retain Pooran, Mayank and Bishnoi for IPL 2025

IPL retention: How many players can a team keep? And at what cost?

While Head did not have an impact in the IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders, he has a proven record of performing on big occasions – he scored a hundred against India in both the World Test Championship final in and the ODI World Cup final in 2023. His 137 in the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad played a key role in SRH buying him for INR 6.8 crore ($819,000 approximately then) at the IPL 2024 auction. And though his price tag has more than doubled, it is likely that he may have fetched a higher bid had he entered the auction.Reddy, 21, has also had a huge increase in his value from the INR 20 lakh SRH paid for him in 2023. He was the Emerging Player of the Year in IPL 2024, for scoring 303 runs at a strike rate of 143 and taking three wickets with his seam bowling. He was then picked for India’s T20I series in Zimbabwe but missed the tour because of injury. Reddy eventually made his international debut during the home T20Is against Bangladesh earlier in October. He was part of the reserves for the ongoing Test series against New Zealand and will travel to Australia as part of the India A squad to play two four-day games from October 31 as well as the India squad for the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22.

Wolves making late drive for £25m CB who Newcastle have been pushing to sign

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now making a late drive to sign a £25m defender, who Newcastle United have been pushing to sign, reporter Simon Phillips has revealed.

Wolves eager to bolster defensive options

Following Nelson Semedo’s departure, one of Vitor Pereira’s most pressing tasks is to bring in a new right-back before the Premier League season gets underway in less than two weeks’ time.

It was recently revealed that the Old Gold have agreed a £14.8m deal to sign Sevilla defender Juanlu, but they are yet to get it over the line, given that the 21-year-old wants to join Serie A champions Napoli, who have also been named as potential suitors.

Borussia Dortmund’s Ryerson is another option on the shortlist, and contact was recently made with the right-back’s agents, although there could be competition for his signature from newly-promoted Sunderland.

Given that Semedo’s contract has now expired, bringing in a new right-back is of key significance, but Pereira may also be keen to bolster his options in central defence, given that his side shipped the most goals of any side to avoid relegation last season.

Even better signing than Arias: Wolves now keen to land "rapid" £30m winger

Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters are already excited about the signing of Jhon Arias, but could Wolves secure an even better winger worth £30m?

ByBen Gray Aug 5, 2025

According to Phillips (via Molineux News), Wolves are now making a late drive to sign Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi, with the defender also a target for Newcastle United, who have been pushing to get a deal over the line for quite some time.

Chelsea are open to sanctioning Disasi’s departure this summer, with it previously being revealed the Blues could hold out for £25m, but up to this point they have mainly been receiving loan to buy offers.

"Monster" Disasi could help solve Wolves' defensive woes

Once described as a “monster” by journalist Rahman Osman, the French defender has been unable to force his way into Enzo Maresca’s plans, but he managed to impress during a loan spell at Aston Villa during the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

It has been suggested that Villa wanted to sign the 27-year-old on a permanent basis, having impressed staff with his mentality and dedication to training during his time with Unai Emery’s side.

The five-time France international made ten appearances for the Villans, during which time he impressed in possession of the ball and in the air, placing in the 95th percentile for his pass completion rate per 90, and the 90th percentile for aerials won over the past year.

Wolves have already made major improvements to their attack this summer, bringing in the likes of Jhon Arias and Fer Lopez, so it could now be time to work on strengthening their defence, and Disasi has what it takes to be a success at Molineux.

Verdão volta do intervalo e amplia o placar

Nesse meio tempo, Abel Ferreira começou a mexer no time e poupar algumas peças.

5 a 0 e fecha a conta.

E agora?

England romp to 286-run victory as Bell chimes in South Africa collapse

England romp to first Test victory for ten years as wheels come off for SA in second innings

England 395 for 9 dec and 236 (Knight 90, Mlaba 6-67) beat South Africa 281 (Wolvaardt 65, Kapp 57, Luus 56, Bell 4-49) and 64 (Bell 4-27, Ecclestone 2-7) by 286 runsEngland have won their first Test in 10 years and as many matches by beating South Africa by 286 runs in Bloemfontein. They dismissed South Africa for 64 in their second innings, their lowest Test total after setting them a target of 351.Lauren Bell, who registered a career-best 4 for 49 in the first innings, rewrote her own record and picked up 4 for 27 to finish with a player-of-the-match haul of 8 for 76. Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone were also among the wickets as England bowled South Africa out in 19.4 overs to win inside three days.South Africa’s dismal batting overshadowed the good work they’d done with the ball, particularly the performance of left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba. She became the first South African to take 10 wickets in a women’s Test and is now South Africa’s second-leading wicket-taker in the format. South Africa may have time to reflect on that once the dust has settled on their massive defeat. Theirs was the third-largest by runs in women’s Tests.England’s win was set up by a captain’s knock from Heather Knight, who scored her sixth Test half-century. She fell 10 short of a third hundred as she anchored an England innings in which most of the middle-order got starts but only she converted. Her most profitable partnership was a third-wicket stand of 67 with Nat Sciver-Brunt which was three runs more than South Africa’s second-innings total. They had only one partnership worth 20 and six in single figures, while only ten batters made it to the middle after Ayanda Hlubi was ruled out of the match with a torn hip flexor.By the time she would have been needed, all the damage was done. South Africa lost their openers in the 5.2 overs they faced before tea, both lbw. Laura Wolvaardt was caught on the back foot by a delivery that seamed in from Bell and, after being on the receiving end of a poor first-innings dismissal, she could not complain about this one.Anneke Bosch had slightly more reason to be unhappy. She was given out to Filer, to one that kept low and could have been missing leg. But the biggest talking point took place after the break when Bell appealed for a catch off Annerie Dercksen at short leg. It was not immediately given out and the umpires referred, despite the explicit absence of DRS for this contest, before Dercksen was sent on her way.Bell continued to find movement and bowled Sune Luus through the gate. Nadine de Klerk was run out for a pair, and when Chloe Tryon was lbw to an Ecclestone arm-ball, also for a duck, England were into the tail. South Africa’s starts with Sinalo Jafta at No.8 and she too went without scoring, pinned on the pads by Bell’s inswinger, to leave the innings in tatters at 44 for 7. Three overs later, Marizanne Kapp, their last remaining batter, was wonderfully scooped up by Beaumont at silly point without addition, and the end came quickly.Earlier, South Africa would have been fairly pleased with their work with ball in hand. De Klerk and Tumi Sekhukhune started well and were disciplined upfront. They gave away only 12 runs in the first six overs, with Sekhukhune removing Beaumont for 12, lbw to an inswinger. On this occasion, the absence of DRS proved no problem as she looked out, and was given.Nonkululeko Mlaba claimed the first ten-for by a South African in women’s Tests•Gallo Images/Getty Images

Sekhukhune was replaced by Dercksen, but then South Africa went for double spin with Mlaba at one end and Tryon at the other. Given the turn on offer and amount Mlaba gets, she was expected to be a threat and should have had a wicket in her fourth over when Sciver-Brunt edged as she lunged forward to block but Jafta could not hold on to the chance. Sciver-Brunt, on 19 at the time, went on to hit Mlaba for three fours in the over and the floodgates opened.Mlaba got Sciver-Brunt when she chopped on after a delivery kept low, but that only brought Danni Wyatt-Hodge to the crease, with her penchant for finding runs behind square on the off side. She rattled along to a run-a-ball 23, before slicing Sekhukhune to the fielder at deep third. Amy Jones then partnered Knight, who had reached her fifty off 99 balls, to lunch, to end a successful session. Despite England’s slow start to the morning session, they scored a total of 136 runs in the 27 overs bowled before lunch, at a rate of just over five runs to the over.Mlaba switched ends post lunch and had success from the Willows End. Amy Jones got a leading edge to Wolvaardt in the covers, minutes before it was announced that the South African skipper had earned a demerit point for expressing “excessive disappointment” when she was given out lbw in the first innings. She had reason to keep being pleased in the field though. Mlaba picked up a third when Charlie Dean flicked her to short mid-wicket, and though Knight moved into the 80s with a strong sweep off Sune Luus, that shot would prove her undoing. One over after Sophie Ecclestone had fallen in the same fashion to Mlaba, Knight was beaten by a ball that turned into her and struck her on the pad. Of course, she could not review.Ryana MacDonald-Gay was bowled through the bat-pad gap to become Mlaba’s 10th wicket. England’s innings ended with half an hour to go before the tea break. They only needed 69 minutes after that interval to end the match.

Likelihood of Tottenham signing £40m forward revealed, Frank asked for him

Tottenham have had a worryingly quiet summer transfer window so far, and Thomas Frank quite simply must strengthen before the start of his debut campaign in the north London dugout.

While the likes of Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea spend hundreds of millions on reinforcing their squads, ahead of what is expected to be a very competitive Premier League season, Spurs boast just three major first-team signings.

Mohammed Kudus arrived in a £55 million deal from West Ham, and chairman Daniel Levy managed to negotiate a cut-price £30 million deal for Mathys Tel with Joao Palhinha also arriving on loan – but that is the sum of their activity.

Technically, Tottenham have spent £116 million this summer, if you count Kevin Danso’s obligation to buy deal, which was agreed in January, but Levy’s spending still doesn’t even come close to their arch rivals.

We’re less than a week away from the start of the new Premier League season and a meagre few days from Spurs’ UEFA Super Cup clash against PSG, but Frank’s new-look squad is somehow weaker than Ange Postecoglou’s.

Son Heung-min’s emotional goodbye to LAFC and James Maddison’s crippling ACL rupture, adding to Dejan Kulusevski’s long-term absence with a knee injury, leaves Frank desperately short of options.

Reinforcing the squad with quality is an absolute non-negotiable if Levy is serious about transforming Spurs into genuine trophy contenders.

They’re set to be among the big boys in next season’s Champions League draw too – making new signings all the more important before the transfer deadline in under a month.

Fabrizio Romano has suggested that striker Richarlison could leave Tottenham as well, and if that were to be the case, Spurs could become genuine contenders for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson with contact made.

There was another striker on their radar earlier this summer, Brentford star Yoane Wissa – a player Frank knows well from his many years at the Gtech.

Likelihood of Tottenham signing Brentford striker Yoane Wissa

Spurs were in talks for Wissa around the time of their failed move to sign playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest, but precious little has been reported about their interest since then. Now, journalist Graeme Bailey has provided an update to TBR Football.

Yoane Wissa celebrates for Brentford.

Bailey reports that Frank “specifically identified” Wissa as a target for Tottenham, and the club held talks with him, but the likelihood of Spurs doing a deal for the 29-year-old is now very unlikely as Newcastle United close in on the £40 million forward.

“Spurs did open talks with Yoane Wissa when Frank first came in,” said Bailey. “That was a player Frank specifically identified. But it looks like Wissa’s nailed on for Newcastle now. Frank made it clear from day one that he told Wissa exactly how he wanted to use him, centrally.

“I think Frank also understands the reality. Do you really pay £40 million for a 29-year-old with one year left on his deal? Tottenham are never going to do that. Newcastle look like they will, but there are other reasons behind that move.”

The Congolese bagged 20 goals in all competitions last season, with 19 of them coming in the Premier League, but that £40m could be reinvested into the signing of a proven playmaker – which Frank desperately needs.

You can see why they’ve backed out, and amid reports Jackson could leave Chelsea on loan, they do have other, cheaper options to target up front.
