Tottenham now accelerate deal to sign "beautiful" £47m+ Savinho alternative

Tottenham Hotspur have now accelerated their pursuit of a “technically beautiful” Savinho alternative, with Manchester City reluctant to sanction the Brazilian’s departure.

Tottenham facing uphill battle in Savinho pursuit

With Son Heung-min exiting N17 and James Maddison set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, it is imperative that Tottenham bolster their attacking options ahead of the transfer deadline, which is in just one week’s time.

Savinho has emerged as one of Spurs’ major targets, and the Brazil international is keen on a move to N17, but Man City are hesitant to sanction a departure, and are looking to hold out for a fee in the region of £70m – £80m.

Promisingly, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Thomas Frank’s side are prepared to spend big to secure the 21-year-old’s signature.

However, given that it is by no means a guarantee that City will be prepared to sell, the Lilywhites are continuing to run the rule over potential alternative targets, and there has now been a development in their pursuit of AS Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche.

According to a report from Football Insider, Spurs are now accelerating the deal to sign Akliouche, with Monaco prepared to accept a bid in the region of £47.5m, which could make the 23-year-old a more realistic target than Savinho.

Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke added: “He’s a top young player, 23 years old, probably one of the most exciting young talents in Ligue 1 right now – he can play as a winger, or as a number 10 as well.

Levy now launches Tottenham move to sign "sensational" £30m Eze alternative

Daniel Levy has now personally stepped up his interest in an attacking midfielder.

“If Tottenham aren’t able to resurrect their deal for Savinho, Akliouche would be a decent alternative, and it does seem that Monaco would sell at the right price.”

"Technically beautiful" Akliouche could be exciting Savinho alternative

Scout Antonio Mango is clearly a big fan of the Monaco star, having described him as a “dream to watch play football” and “technically beautiful”, off the back of an impressive 2024-25 campaign.

The Frenchman amassed 19 goal contributions in all competitions across the season, perhaps most memorably finding the back of the net with a stunning overhead kick against Rennes.

Savinho should remain Tottenham’s top target, given that the starlet is already proven in the Premier League, chipping in with ten Premier League assists for City last season.

However, Akliouche has proven that he could be a fantastic alternative option, and an asking price of around £47.5m seems reasonable, given the forward’s exploits last season.

Australia captain Pat Cummins is in doubt for the Champions Trophy after it was revealed that he had been managing an ankle problem during the Test series against India. It was confirmed on Thursday that Cummins would miss the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka (paternity leave) and will undergo scans on his ankle in the coming days to determine whether he will be able to lead the team in the Champions Trophy, which will be held across Pakistan and the UAE next month.”We’ll have to wait and see when that scan comes back and see how it’s tracking,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “There’s a little bit of work to do. We’ll probably get a bit more information around where that’s at.”Related

“Josh is working really hard and all the news of how he’s responding to his recovery from the calf injury is coming along really well,” Bailey said. “It’s just probably a little bit tight, given the amount of time that he would have missed and also with how we may structure up and the loads those quicks may be put under.”Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Sean Abbott are the three frontline quicks heading to Sri Lanka. Abbott could earn a Test debut on the tour, and it was his durability that earned him the nod.”In Sean’s favour, given outside of the conditions that we expect to face, he’s just robust,” Bailey said. “We know he can put a heavy body of work in should he be required.”

Ideal Eze replacement: Crystal Palace in talks for £15m star after Yeremy

Of all 20 Premier League clubs, one of the sides most likely to be extremely active in the final few days of the transfer window are Crystal Palace.

On Saturday, it was confirmed that Eberechi Eze had left the club, joining Arsenal for £67.5m, which represents Palace’s biggest ever sale.

Meantime, the Eagles have made just two new signings, bringing in Walter Benítez to be the new back-up goalkeeper on a free, while paying £3m to sign Borna Sosa, a reserve left-wing-back, from Ajax.

Thus, Oliver Glasner has just 20 senior outfield players in his squad, including those who are currently injured, which is simply not enough if Palace are going to successfully balance both domestic and European commitments.

As a result, the next few days are likely to be very busy for Steve Parish and his recruitment staff, but are they closing in on a Premier League winger valued at £15m?

Crystal Palace's need for signings

Crystal Palace badly need strength in depth all across the pitch, including at centre-back, hence why they reportedly hold an interest in former Newcastle United man, Lloyd Kelly, among others.

Meantime, as they seek to fill the enormous void vacated by Eze, the Eagles are set to sign Yéremy Pino from Villarreal for £26m, with the Spain international having travelled to London to undergo a medical.

However, he might not be the only winger on his way to Selhurst Park.

That’s because, as reported by The Sun, Crystal Palace are ‘in talks’ with Arsenal over the possibility of signing Reiss Nelson.

They add that the Gunners value the 25-year-old at £15m, with Arsenal needing to raise funds before Monday’s deadline, having already spent big; Jakub Kiwior, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fábio Vieira are also very much for sale.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Nelson joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight so, following loan spells at Hoffenheim, Feyenoord and Fulham, could he finally be on the move permanently, perhaps returning to South London where he was born and raised?

What Reiss Nelson would bring to Crystal Palace

Despite being 25 years old, Nelson actually does not have a vast amount of senior experience under his belt.

To date, he has played just 163 senior matches: 90 for Arsenal, 32 for Feyenoord, 29 during a loan spell at Hoffenheim and 12 in Fulham colours last season, before suffering a season-ending knee injury in December, curtailing his time with the Cottagers.

Nevertheless, he has always been a highly-rated player, with Mikel Arteta labelling him an “exciting offensive talent”, praising his “tremendous ability”, while Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout notes that “pace, acceleration, dribbling, technique and flair” are amongst his primary attributes.

For various reasons, one has to go back to Nelson’s loan at Feyenoord for the last time he played more than 641 minutes in a season, so let’s assess his statistics from that year in the Netherlands.

As the table outlines, during his campaign in Rotterdam, despite limited minutes, Nelson was a key contributor for Feyenoord as they finished third in the Eredivisie and also reached the inaugural Europa Conference League Final, beaten by Roma in Tirana.

While the Englishman’s end-product was somewhat lacking, the table underlines that his strengths are his dribbling, ranked highly for progressive carries, attempted take-ons, take-on success percentage and carries into the opposition penalty area.

Even in the Premier League last season, he ended up 17th for attempted take-ons per 90, as well as seventh in the division for carries into the final third on a per-90 basis, despite. not taking to the pitch after 5 December.

Thus, while clearly not as good at Eze, Nelson certainly shares his compatriot’s quality dribbling ability, something Palace’s squad now lacks following the departure of their talisman.

In Glasner’s 3-4-3 system, able to be deployed as an inside forward, thereby closer to goal rather than out on the touchline, a move to Selhurst could get the best out of Nelson as he seeks to revitalise his career and prevent it from fizzling out.

A informação é do Twitter do repórter do Lance!, Rafael Ribeiro.

After lengthy injury layoff, Jamieson climbs back from the 'bottom of the cliff'

He last played international cricket a year ago, before being named as injury replacement for Lockie Ferguson in the Champions Trophy

Kyle Jamieson last played international cricket a year ago. Since then, there were ten months out with a stress fracture of the back – for the second time in his career. Having been named in New Zealand’s squad for the Champions Trophy as an injury replacement for Lockie Ferguson, Jamieson feels he is in the best place ever “from a cricket point”.Jamieson last played an ODI in September 2023, against Bangladesh just before the World Cup. Looking back at his time off, Jamieson said his comeback worked out “roughly around the time-frames we looked at”.”I had a good crew around me, and the start of it was trying to put that all together around, what that’s going to look like, and how we’re going to get from where I was at the bottom of the cliff and how we’re going to get back up to the top of it,” he said after reaching Rawalpindi ahead of New Zealand’s match against Bangladesh.Related

Jamieson has had his share of injures in a short international career so far. In June 2022, he experienced “sharp pain” in his lower back and walked off midway through his 17th over in a Test at Trent Bridge. Just ahead of the home Tests against England in early 2023, a suspected recurrence of the back injury ruled him out and he underwent surgery. It was only in August that year that Jamieson was back on the field, when he played five T20Is and three ODIs across the tours of the UAE and England. He then toured Bangladesh, where he played in two of the three ODIs.New Zealand even named Jamieson as cover for an injured Matt Henry for the World Cup in 2023, before drafting him into the squad proper. Although Jamieson didn’t get to play the tournament, he featured in both Tests on the subsequent tour of Bangladesh. However, a stiff hamstring ruled him out of the ODI series at home against the same opposition, and he also sat out of the T20Is on “medical advice”. It was after that, halfway through the home series against South Africa, that Jamieson found himself out again.”It’s been a long one. Obviously, a lot of hard work [has gone into the comeback],” he said. “I had to go back to square one, and rebuild a few things. [I had to] try and solidify the foundations so I can get back to this arena and take on the different forms of cricket again. It’s certainly been a long road, but it’s quite funny once you’re back in the mix and forget about how long it’s taken.”In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, Jamieson worked his way back by representing Canterbury in the Super Smash and Ford Trophy, New Zealand’s domestic T20 and 50-over competitions respectively. He bagged 14 wickets at an average of 18.71 to be Canterbury Magicians’ highest wicket-taker in the Super Smash, where he played in all 12 matches.”I really enjoyed being a part of a full campaign. You don’t often get a chance to be a part of long stretches of time with your domestic team,” he said. “From the cricket point of view, it was great to be back in the park and just see where your game’s at. I was always reasonably confident that part was going to be okay, but it’s just nice to obviously put it back into that arena. I guess those are some of the pressures and challenges that come with that sort of high-pressure cricket.”New Zealand face Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Monday, after beating Pakistan comfortably in the tournament opener. They then face India on March 2 in Dubai in what is the final group fixture of the tournament.

Santner: 'New Zealand will be better for the run against Varun'

New Zealand captain says his side is well aware of Varun’s threats, having faced him in the group-stage match

Andrew Fidel Fernando08-Mar-20253:34

Mitchell Santner on Varun Chakravarthy: ‘We know what his threats are now’

There are many experienced players in the India team that New Zealand men’s side will be wary of in the Champions Trophy final. But one of their most inexperienced players will also loom large on the minds of New Zealand’s batters.Varun Chakravarthy has played all of three ODIs, but in that stretch, he has got eight wickets, and averages 18.12. By far his best haul came against New Zealand, in these teams’ final group match, when on a big-turning track, he claimed 5 for 42, with several New Zealand batters unable to pick him.In fact it’s not only New Zealand’s own batters. On Friday evening, two days out from the final, Chakravarthy was even seen bamboozling no less a player than Virat Kohli in the nets at the ICC Academy. Chakravarthy had followed up his five-for against New Zealand with another solid outing against Australia, on a track less given to spin, in the semi-final. He took 2 for 49 from 10 overs.Related

Ind vs NZ: A spin cycle for Champions Trophy glory

Tactics board: How key will Kohli vs Santner be? Is batting first the best option in Dubai?

Having seen him once already could make it easier for the batters to handle him, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said on the eve of the final.”I think guys will be better for the run against Varun. He’s obviously a world-class bowler we’ve seen it here and in the IPL. He’s got that little bit of mystery. But it was the first time some of the guys have been facing him. I think they’ll learn from the other day.”Santner got a particularly vicious delivery from Chakravarthy in the group match, one that was flat and fast, and yet took substantial turn to take out his off stump.Varun Chakravarthy picked up five wickets against New Zealand•ICC via Getty Images

“If the pitch plays a similar way, it’s going to be a challenge along with all three of their other spinners. I think the boys will be ready for tomorrow having looked at a little bit more footage. We know what his threats are now. That 115kph arm ball, that got me – that was a bit of a threat.”While Chakravarthy is India’s top spin-bowling wicket-taker in the tournament, their other three spinners have also prospered on a turning Dubai track. Axar Patel has five wickets for the tournament, and Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have four each. They had been effective through the middle in that previous game against New Zealand.”I think the way Axar and Jadeja denied us for a long time, it might be something similar again on a slow wicket, where it’s as if you can kind of just rotate and hit the odd bad ball away, you can get yourself up to a decent score,” Santner said.”We’ve got some good players of spin and it’s about them trying to just play their games and whether it’s to get your broom out and sweep, or it’s to use your feet, I guess we kind of give our players the freedom to play their own way.”New Zealand have their own quartet of spinners, in Santner himself, Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra.”On the flipside, it’s the same with us. For us it’s about trying to build pressure for a long period of time to produce a false shot.”

Not just Tel: Spurs dud who's like a "pub player" is finished under Frank

Tottenham Hotspur will return to the Champions League for the first time in three years, qualifying for the competition despite ending the previous campaign in a measly 17th place.

Their Europa League triumph at the end of the 2024/25 season secured automatic qualification to Europe’s most prestigious club competition – with Thomas Frank the man to lead the Lilywhites into clashes against numerous elite-level outfits.

A trip to current defending champions PSG, with the new boss wanting to achieve revenge after falling to a defeat against Luis Enrique’s side in the Super Cup final back in August.

However, the 51-year-old will also be hoping to go one better than Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine leading the club to the final of the Champions League back in 2018/19 – before suffering a defeat to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

With the competition getting underway in less than two weeks’ time, Frank has had to select his 22-man squad – leading to eyebrows being raised around a couple of his selections.

Mathys Tel's exclusion at Tottenham

Despite joining Spurs in a £29m transfer from Bayern Munich this summer, attacker Mathys Tel may find himself on the way out of the club in the not-too-distant future.

The Frenchman made 20 appearances on loan with the Lilywhites last season, subsequently making his transfer permanent during the off-season, adding depth into Frank’s final third.

However, he’s only featured for a total of 19 minutes in the Premier League this campaign, before being left out of the club’s Champions League squad for the group stage.

Such a decision has been the talking point of the fanbase over recent days, leading to questions over his long-term future at the club, with Frank evidently preferring other options in North London.

As a result, his time with the Lilywhites could come to a premature end, but he may not be the only one, with the board also needing to offload another talent in the coming weeks.

The Spurs player whose career looks finished under Frank

A change of management brings about fresh chances and opportunities for players to stake their claim for a first-team place and resurrect their flailing careers.

Tottenham star Djed Spence

Djed Spence is arguably one of the biggest success stories after being signed during the Antonio Conte reign, even though the manager himself was known to not want the player.

However, after looking certain to leave, the injury crisis last season gave him a chance to impress, with the 25-year-old now a full England international after receiving a call-up from Thomas Tuchel.

Despite the success stories, other players don’t endure the same fate, as seen with Yves Bissouma, with the Malian international now certain to depart the club in the coming weeks.

The 29-year-old has sadly regressed over the last year, so much so that former pro Adam Alfi described him as a “pub league player”. He still made 44 appearances across all competitions last season, but he’s yet to feature in any competitive outing since Frank took the reins during the off-season.

The Dane stated that the midfielder had been left out of his squad for the Super Cup final clash with PSG due to disciplinary issues, subsequently being left out of every other matchday squad.

Bissouma’s misery has been compounded over recent days, as he’s also been left out of the Champions League squad, just like Tel, leading to rumours over a potential exit from the Lilywhites.

He’s been touted with moves to Turkey and Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, potentially securing a permanent transfer away from North London, with their windows still open throughout September.

With just a year left on his current contract, the hierarchy desperately need to facilitate a move for the midfielder as soon as possible to avoid losing him for nothing just a couple of years after paying £35m for his signature.

It’s clear Frank is trying to install the right attitude into his squad, something which Bissouma has constantly failed to adhere to – as seen by his recent disciplinary record.

As a result, his spell at the club now appears all but over, with Tel potentially joining him in leaving the club after his own omission from the European squad for the 2025/26 season.
