Rangers fans love the likelihood that Halliday will start Old Firm

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been giving their verdict on a huge talking point ahead of Sunday’s derby, as Andy Halliday is expected to start at left back.

Borna Barisic will not be fit for the Old Firm having picked up an injury on international duty.

The flying left back, who has faced plenty of criticism for his recent performances, scored his first international goal last week against Azerbaijan, but then injured his ankle against Hungary.

The Daily Record expect the Croatian to miss at least two weeks, pending a scan that will determine the true extent of the damage.

Halliday is likely to be the man to step in on Sunday, and let’s just say fans are pretty happy about it.

The versatile 27 year-old certainly won’t be the most technically gifted player on the pitch, but few will show more fight and passion.

Middlesbrough: Stay of execution for Pulis could prove fatal to play-off hopes

Middlesbrough’s terrible run of late shows no sign of ending, and with a tricky looking away game at a Swansea side who will be playing with no pressure due to their mid-table position, it could be set to continue.

Fans are rightly unhappy, and although the players need to burden some of the responsibility themselves, it is manager, Tony Pulis, who is receiving the most heat from the Riverside faithful.

Boos have become commonplace at home games now, but they were accompanied by chants against the manager during the Bristol City defeat this week, and chairman, Steve Gibson, is under pressure to do something about it.

But the Daily Star report today, that Gibson will not wilt under the growing calls to replace Pulis, and will continue to stand behind him until the end of the season.

It is a big call from Gibson, although he will feel that to replace him now will not give a new man enough time to bond with the squad and get the best out of them.

But an alternate view would be that a change could see a boost to morale, and, as is often the case, results improve for the new man during the so-called ‘honeymoon period’.

But that short upsurge in fortunes may be enough to get Boro’ back on track and into the play-off hunt — a scenario that looks ever more unlikely as they plod on under Pulis.

Certainly, another defeat at Swansea tomorrow will see the dissenting voices become ever-louder, and it will be hard to see a way back for Pulis or Boro’.

Many fans were calling for the former West Brom boss to walk away, in the best interests of the club, but Pulis steadfastly refused to do so.

He said, after the midweek loss,: “I have been in this position before. I don’t determine my job, that is up to Steve. I will just keep going.

“It’s (his future) nothing to do with me, it’s up to Steve, ask him. I will carry on, keep going, but the important thing is the players keep performing the way they are playing and results will come. I said that four games ago, mind.”

That last seven-word sentence should tell Gibson all he needs to know. If, four games after he vowed things would get better if they just kept going as they were, they are in a worse position than then, surely he is not capable of getting anything more from his side.

He has to go, and for the sake of any slim play-off hopes the Boro’ fans have — regardless of tomorrow’s result — it has to be now!

What do you think, Boro’ fans? Is it too late to replace Pulis now? Should he go and let someone else try to resurrect your season? Or should you just bring someone in temporarily and consolidate for next year? Let us know what you think…

Leeds United: Bielsa must force his players to focus after Phillips outburst

A game of football can be won both on and off of the pitch.

Throughout history, managers have tried to gain a mental advantage over their opposition with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho mastering this particular art. However, when a club’s player tries to get involved it usually doesn’t have anywhere near the same effect.

Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips’ outburst yesterday is the latest case of this. Speaking in a press conference (as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post) ahead of the Whites’ clash against Preston North End last night, the midfielder remarked that: “There’s six more big games to go but hopefully after tomorrow night, we can have a little chill, relax and watch Sheffield United get beat!” Even though the comments were apparently a light-hearted attempt of humour by Phillips, it is not the message that manager Marcelo Bielsa will be wanting his players to be sending to their promotion rivals.

The Blades do not need any more encouragement this season yet upon hearing this revelation, Chris Wilder may use it as motivation to do what Leeds could not do at the weekend; beat Birmingham City. If they can clinch victory at St Andrew’s, United will remain in pole position to secure a top-two finish alongside runaway leaders Norwich City.

Up until this point in the season, the promotion race in the Championship had been played in good spirit yet with the tension cranking up a notch over the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see whether it will be Bielsa or his English counterpart who keeps their cool.

What do you think Leeds supporters? Are Phillips’ comments wise at this stage of the campaign? Does Bielsa need to control what his players say to the media between now and May? Let us know below.

Sheffield Wednesday must look to keep Lucas Joao rather than selling

It was bound to happen at some point right? After their first loss since January, Wednesday fans must not be saddened but, instead, think of how good their side has been in recent weeks.

Losses are inevitable whoever you are and although Steve Bruce has done a terrific job convincing fans otherwise, even the Owls must lose at some point.

With a loss against Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday must now focus on finishing the season strong, whether that’s somehow sneaking into the play-offs or getting better prepared for next season. By which that means that Wednesday could look to give game-time to those who are deserving and are set to stay beyond the campaign, rather than others.

Although Lucas Joao hasn’t played since February and historically has a history suffering injuries, Wednesday should still look to keep the forward who is a nuisance on his day.

Joao, (who is valued at £1.8 million on Transfermarkt) is reportedly (according to the Sun via HITC) a player who Sheffield Wednesday may look to get rid of this summer and understandably so due to his injury record.

Yet putting that to one side, you will also discover that Lucas Joao has nine goals this season and it has to be said that when fit, Joao is a player you would want in your team. Unlike their current striking options like Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu, Joao on his day is a goalscorer that can be relied upon and is a great option in the Championship.

The Owls need to ensure they improve rather than decline this summer and selling Lucas Joao would be a bad move considering how good he can be.

Do you agree that Lucas Joao deserves to stay at Sheffield Wednesday? If not, why not? Let us know!

Spurs given major boost in hunt for Premier League ace

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur have been given a major boost in their bid to sign Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, per Football Insider.

The report claims that Spurs scouts have been watching Wan-Bissaka as they weigh up a summer offer for a player who has made great strides this season.

What’s the word?

Wan-Bissaka has enjoyed an exceptional campaign at Palace, making fast progress under manager Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

The 21-year-old has made 35 appearances in all competitions this season and has also won two caps for England’s Under-21 side.

Palace want Wan-Bissaka to stay, Football Insider claim, but a bid of £30million would see them discuss a deal.

Spurs are said to be ready to conduct a major overhaul of the club’s squad this summer.

And the report claims that the Eagles star is seen as the right profile of player to build around in the coming years.

Trippier and Aurier for the chop

Doubts persist over the futures of both Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But it appears that there could be more departures than that duo, with Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier both consistently highest in the right-back pecking order in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

Trippier has endured a difficult season, categorised by amateurish mistakes, while Aurier is ill-disciplined and seemingly deemed as untrustworthy by his manager.

A move for Wan-Bissaka, then, would surely see both players put up for sale.

Kyle Walker-Peters has been fast-tracked into the first-team and played 90 minutes against Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

He would be able to deputise for the Palace star were a transfer completed, with the cash pocketed from the sales of both the England international and the ex-PSG defender available for reinvestment elsewhere in the squad.

Benitez reportedly ready to quit Newcastle, fans react

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to the latest news on Rafael Benitez’s future, and they have every reason to be worried.

According to The Northern Echo, Benitez is ready to quit if the club do not meet his demands.

The report states that suggestions that the Spaniard loves the club too much to leave are false, and that he will indeed walk if the impasse over his contract continues.

The 59 year-old is attracting interest from China and the Middle East, which would of course mean huge financial compensation, while a handful of La Liga clubs are also linked.

And the boss himself may have unwillingly added fuel to the fire on Thursday, denying reports that Matt Ritchie has been told he can leave this summer: “If I don’t know if I have a contract how can I tell him?”

The report from The Evening Chronicle includes more quotes from the boss on Ritchie and his future, but fans are already putting two and two together and suspecting he will leave.

Portsmouth: If Pompey are promoted, Kenny Jackett must do all he can to keep hold of Jamal Lowe

It’s been an incredible season for Portsmouth, who have already wrapped up one piece of silverware and are closing in on promotion to the Championship.

With three games of the season left, Kenny Jackett knows that maximum points from Pompey’s remaining matches will be enough to secure an automatic promotion spot in the League One table, and one of the driving forces behind the south coast side’s impressive season is winger Jamal Lowe.

The 24-year-old attacker has been one of the stand-out players in the division this season, scoring 16 goals and assisting nine in all competitions in a campaign that has seen Lowe score at Wembley Stadium in the EFL Trophy final and being named in the PFA League One Team of the Season.

After such an impressive season, it’s likely Portsmouth will be subject to interest for their star winger this summer, and Lowe is already being targeted by some big clubs.

According to Football League World, West Brom are keen on signing Lowe this summer transfer window whether or not Portsmouth are promoted to the Championship or not.

With Pompey in a great position to finish the season in a surprising automatic promotion spot in League One, Jackett must do all he can to keep hold of Lowe this summer if Portsmouth are promoted to the Championship come the end of this campaign.

Lowe has been one of Portsmouth’s best performing players this season and has built up a great reputation with the Pompey faithful, and to throw it away to join a team that might not even use him as a first-choice winger will be bad for all parties involved.

The 24-year-old attacker can continue his legacy as one of Portsmouth’s best players of the modern era if he rejects West Brom’s advances, and if Pompey are promoted, Lowe can lead the club to success in the English second division.

Portsmouth fans, should Lowe remain at Pompey next season? Let us know!

Can’t be serious: Gerrard’s quotes on Joe Cole from 2010 make for great reading

[ad_pod ]

Joe Cole was a fantastic player.

Seven incredible years at Chelsea saw him win three Premier League titles and two FA Cups, before he joined Liverpool on a free transfer in 2010, becoming one of Roy Hodgson’s first signings at Anfield – Cole had scored 40 goals and assisted a further 42 in 280 appearances for the Blues.

However, the former England international never really lived up to expectations on Merseyside. The Reds’ former No.10 was sent off on his league debut against Arsenal, and only managed to find the back of the net five times in 42 appearances.

However, his goalscoring record probably wasn’t the worst feature of his time at Liverpool. Oh no.

Has Salamon Rondon had a better season than Bobby Firmino? Matt from The Magpie Channel discusses in the video below…

That award goes to Steven Gerrard, whose wild claim upon Cole’s arrival at the club now makes for embarrassing reading for him personally, but hilarious reading for the rest of us.

What did he say?

When Cole arrived at Anfield back in the summer of 2010, Gerrard said: “[Lionel] Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better.

“He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can’t even do with a football. I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season.”

Ill-informed comparison

At the time, Cole had won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, one League Cup, one Community Shield and had made the PFA Team of the Year, so he was clearly a player of some pedigree.

However, Gerrard saying that he was basically better than Messi was pure ridiculous.

At the time of Cole’s move to Liverpool, the diminutive Argentine had won four La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, two Champions League titles, one UEFA Super Cup and one Club World Cup title, as well as two Ballon d’Or successes and numerous other individual awards.

Oh, and the small matter of him banging in 127 career goals – Cole only ever managed to score 95 across his entire 20-year career. Fittingly, Messi actually hit his 600th career goal against Liverpool just last Wednesday.

Classless: Leeds fans are furious with Sheffield United’s players

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are fuming after Sheffield United players were filmed singing a chant about their club during the open top bus parade celebrating their promotion to the Premier League.

The Blades players were broadcast drinking beer and chanting “Leeds are falling apart again” to the tune of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. The chant has been used for many years to mock the Whites and their tendency to start seasons well before falling off.

The chant may never have been more fitting than this season as Marcelo Bielsa’s side failed to win any of their final four games, allowing Sheffield United to clinch promotion to the Premier League, whilst the Whites were resigned to the playoffs.

Leeds fans were understandably frustrated as their bitter rivals rubbed in the fact that they had beaten them by finishing in second.

Supporters took to social media to share their annoyance at the Blades players’ actions.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…
