Aston Villa fans delighted by Wesley display

Aston Villa fans were delighted with Wesley’s performance as he scored twice in the 5-1 thumping of Norwich City on Saturday.

The striker was signed from Club Brugge in the summer for a club-record fee that eclipsed the £18m fee paid for Darren Bent.

However, he struggled to find the net in his first seven games, scoring just twice, with the goals coming against Everton and Arsenal.

He endured a particularly poor outing against Burnley last week, failing to even take a shot at goal throughout his time on the pitch, per WhoScored.

The Brazilian scored with a neat finish in the 14th minute and then doubled his side’s tally with a simple tap-in.

Things did not go completely to plan, however, as Wesley also missed a penalty but fans were impressed with his display as Dean Smith’s men recorded a major victory.

Liverpool fans question Gini Wijnaldum after he nets wonder-goal for the Netherlands

Some Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to question why Gini Wijnaldum isn’t as effective going forward for them as he is for the Netherlands.

The former Newcastle man – who cost Liverpool £25m in 2016 – does tend to score more goals for his country than his club, having now netted four goals in his last four international outings.

In stark contrast, Wijnaldum scored just three Premier League goals in total throughout the entirety of last season.

The first of his two goals against Belarus on Sunday was a powerful header reminiscent of his effort against Barcelona last term, whereas his second strike was a real wonder-strike, nestling in the top-right corner from miles out.

Following his double, a number of the Reds supporters have been pondering why he cannot replicate his goal scoring prowess in a Liverpool shirt.

Let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying after Wijnaldum’s two-goal haul…

Tottenham fans sent into meltdown after Alasdair Gold tweet about January transfers

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been sent into meltdown following an Alasdair Gold tweet from Thursday’s Watford pre-match press conference, where manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested there will be no incoming signings in January.

The Argentine had suggested via Gold only a few weeks ago that changes in his squad were on the way in the New Year and next summer, and it was understandably presumed that it was going to include new players arriving in north London.

However, the former Southampton boss’ latest comments suggests this isn’t the case, even though Spurs are having something of a dismal season, with their previous two results – a 7-2 loss against Bayern Munich and a 3-0 defeat away at Brighton and Hove Albion – summing up their campaign to date.

The Daily Star had previously reported that Tottenham were looking to reignite their interest in Juventus’ Paulo Dybala and were considering a move for Nice right-back Youcef Atal in January, so perhaps the 47-year-old is simply keeping his cards close to his chest.

Nevertheless, it’s fair to say that plenty of Spurs supporters have been sent into meltdown following what their manager has had to say, with one saying they’ve “had enough”, and another calling to “end the season now”.

Leeds may continue to play Stuart Dallas in midfield to avoid repeating mistakes

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds United face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Aside from this being a good old-fashioned Yorkshire derby, there is another massive sub-plot to this game.

Of course, we’re talking about the fact that the Whites will be coming up against their former manager Garry Monk.

Last season the manager was in charge of Birmingham City, and he did the double over United.

Monk got the better of Marcelo Bielsa last season, and it was a rare occasion as the Argentine held his hands up and stated that he’d made a tactical mistake.

Last season’s mistake

Last September, Leeds were handed their first loss of the season by Monk’s Birmingham City side courtesy of two first-half strikes from Che Adams.

Bielsa clearly wasn’t happy with what he was seeing and he made a substitution just 34 minutes into the game.

The former Marseille manager made the bold move of bringing off Kalvin Phillips for Stuart Dallas, and the Whites immediately managed to get a foothold in the game.

The Yorkshire outfit finished the match with 72 per cent of the possession, but that wasn’t enough to earn them any points as they lost 2-1.

Bielsa certainly won’t be making that same mistake against Monk this time, and that may mean that he once again opts to play Stuart Dallas in the midfield.

Why being the away goalkeeper at Leeds is the toughest job in football in the video below…

This time around

After he faced off against Monk at Elland Road last term Bielsa said: “The proposal I chose for this game at the beginning was not the right one.

“We could not make the link between defence and attack because [Kalvin] Phillips could not receive the ball.”

It wouldn’t surprise anyone if the former Swansea boss lined up with a similar tactic once again in order to suppress Phillips’ impact.

To combat Monk’s tactics last year Bielsa brought Dallas on in the midfield, and despite fans criticising the role he has in the middle of the park, they might have to lump seeing him there again this weekend.

The Northern Ireland international can drop deeper in order to give the defence the same type of support he did against Birmingham last season in order to negate the fact that Monk will attempt to alienate Phillips and remove him from the game.

There have been calls for Dallas to stop playing in midfield, but it seems unlikely that this will be the match where Bielsa makes that change.

They may just have to wait a little longer.

Everton: Fans not impressed with club’s reported managerial approach for Marcelino

Everton have approached former Valencia manager Marcelino to take over Marco Silva’s position if he were to be sacked, as spoken on by Cadena Ser and relayed via @EvertonBlueArmy on Twitter.

The Portuguese manager is under severe pressure at Goodison Park after losing three games in their last four and just two wins out of their last seven Premier League outings.

Marcelino is currently out of work after being sacked by Valencia in shocking circumstances, saying that he was sacked for “winning the Copa del Rey last season”. However, Cadena Ser has revealed that Marcelino is top of Everton’s list to replace Silva if he is dismissed.

The Toffees find themselves just two points above the relegation zone with just three wins to their name in their first 10 matches, with their latest loss coming against Brighton in a 3-2 defeat on Saturday.

Supporters were not impressed with the links to the Everton hotseat from the Spanish media. One fan claimed they are now bored of being linked with managers with no experience in the Premier League, while another said that Marcelino is a “sun-dried” version of Silva.

Man Utd swoop for Luke Matheson would add to the youth revolution

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Star, Manchester United are keen on signing Rochdale sensation Luke Matheson.

What’s the word?

The 17-year-old’s name will be familiar to the Old Trafford faithful, having scored against the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

The Daily Star claim both United and arch-rivals Manchester City are involved in a “transfer war” over securing Matheson’s signature, and that the list of top-flight clubs who are keeping an eye on his development gets longer by the week.

The report further adds both United and City are set for a battle in January over signing him, with Rochdale fearing they will not be able to keep hold of the teenager beyond the end of the winter window.

Youth charge

Only 16 when he scored at Old Trafford, Matheson’s name has forever been etched into the history books. The England U18 international essentially produced a starring audition in front of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eyes, with The Daily Star even claiming that his performance “was enough to convince him that he has the potential to play at the highest level”.

The Red Devils are seemingly in the midst of a new approach in bringing through youth talent at the club, and giving them the opportunity to shine. The signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in particular earlier in the summer prove they are absolutely sure-minded in signing promising British talent. Matheson would be yet another name to reinforce that idea.

Speaking after the teenager produced a man-of-the-match display when he was just 15 against Bury back in September 2018, then Rochdale manager Keith Hill remarked: “He was outstanding. We know what he can do. It’s not a leap of faith, because we know what he can do.”

As United continue their own ‘leap of faith’ with young players, Matheson seemingly fits the bill perfectly.

Charlton fans react as Lewis Page steps up his return from injury

Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to react after they saw that Lewis Page had stepped up his return from injury with a 45-minute appearance in the U23 clash against Millwall on Monday.

The left-back is yet to play a single minute of first-team football for the Addicks this season, with Charlton boss Lee Bowyer previously expressing his frustration at the amount of setbacks the 23-year-old had suffered.

Page’s last outing for the south Londoners came in October 2018, and he has made 27 appearances in total since signing from West Ham in January 2017.

Ben Purrington has started 12 Championship games, but has no recognised senior competition behind him, as he and Page are the only two left-backs on the books at The Valley.

Luckily, Page came through the U23 version of the south London derby unscathed – as he revealed himself.

Let’s take a look at how the Charlton fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

Nottingham Forest fans gush over Tiago Silva for his role in Derby victory

Nottingham Forest strengthened their bid for promotion this season with a narrow 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Derby County on Saturday afternoon.

Reds striker Lewis Grabban pounced on a defensive error to hand Sabri Lamouchi all three points at the City Ground.

The 31-year-old was gifted a goal when right-back Jayden Bogle played a poor pass across the face of his own penalty area, leaving Grabban with an opportunity to fire home first-time past the visiting goalkeeper.

But it was midfielder Tiago Silva that drew most of the plaudits on social media following the game as many fans believed he was instrumental to them picking up the win.

One supporter claimed he was the best player on the pitch while another went one further by saying he is the best midfielder in the Championship.

‘Immense’ and ‘sublime’ were two other words used to describe the 26-year-old’s performance with a further member of the Forest faithful labelling him an ‘absolute game changer.’

Here’s the best of the reaction:

QPR’s Manning must improve his concentration if his side are to improve defensively

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Ryan Manning has been in great form for the most part this season, but the worrying aspects of his game were evident against Middlesbrough, and tell him where he must improve.

Mark Warburton has shown he likes to operate with 3-5-2, and it could be his desired formation moving forward despite not winning when it was deployed in the last two games.

The style is useful as it allows Lee Wallace to support Manning in defending the wide areas, but a lack of communication between the pair against Boro allowed Jonny Howson to take up possession – with the latter in no man’s land – and Britt Assombalonga was able to head in from the cross.

That goal, along with the Nahki Wells’ backpass which played through Assomabalonga to score his second, is evidence that it is often individual mistakes letting down this QPR team, and until they rid that their defensive record will continue to paint a poor picture – having now conceded 30 goals in 16 league games.

Manning has recently enjoyed a call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team for the first time, as well as reported interest from Newcastle and West Ham, but to continue making strides he has to improve.

He can’t afford to let complacency or a lack of concentration affect him when defending, and while he continues to contribute going forward, it is of little use if he gives goals away.

Watch Queens Park Rangers Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

As per WhoScored, he made three key passes for his side, including one which led to Wells’ goal, but he was too often a hindrance in defence, and his performance should tell him that he must constantly be trying to better himself.

Being dribbled past can happen as a full-back, but more concerning is the fact he made zero tackles and just one interception.

That indicates that his mind is focused more on attacking, and whether that is by his manager’s instruction or his own decision, it is making QPR more vulnerable at the back, which means they are likely to concede even playing five defenders.

As a result, their current style is unsustainable if they want to place anywhere higher than mid-table, so Warburton must instruct Manning to improve his awareness, even if it stifles him a little going forward at first.

Man United fans hail Nani on his birthday

Manchester United fans have hailed Nani on his birthday.

The former Red Devils ace turned 33 on Sunday and supporters rushed to lavish praise on the Portugal international after the club’s official account wished him many happy returns.

Of course, Nani currently plays in MLS with Orlando City, moving to the club in February of this year.

He is best known for his time at Old Trafford, though, where he made a total of 230 appearances in all competitions.

The winger, who played alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning four Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and two League Cups.

He scored 40 goals during his time in Manchester and also registered 73 assists.

And fans have expressed their admiration for the former United ace, who played for the club between 2007 and 2015; he spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Sporting Lisbon before a permanent move to Fenerbahce.
