After the race, the Harrogate-born runner told BBC Sport: "I mean, I think it's pretty clear. I got stepped out on as I was about to kick on the home straight… then boom, the French lad took me down."

When asked if he had some words afterwards, he said, "Yes. Probably words I am not allowed to say."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to BBC journalist Emma Smith, Mills was reinstated by event organisers and will progress to the men's 5,000m final after all. The 25-year-old, whose father Danny played for Leeds United, Manchester City and England in his career, will hope to win a medal later in the Games.

Chelsea now "monitoring" Liverpool manager target with £8.5m release clause

Chelsea are now monitoring a Liverpool managerial target in case they opt to part ways with current boss Mauricio Pochettino, it has emerged, but will have to shell out £8.5m to secure him.

Pochettino losing the fans

It was always going to be a tough task for former Tottenham boss Pochettino to win over the Chelsea faithful, but this season's performances have only served to increase apathy toward the Argentine.

So far this campaign, poor results, baffling team selection and continued confusion over the longer-term plan from Todd Boehly amid financial fair play concerns have all combined into a sense of disgruntlement at Stamford Bridge.

As it stands, the Blues sit 11th in the Premier League after a disappointing 2-2 draw with 10 man Burnley at home, in which they squandered a lead twice to allow the relegation battlers to leave west London with a point.

The season now hangs in the balance as to whether it will be a failure at best or a catastrophe at worst. A run of wins could see the Blues climb into one of the spots for either the Europa League or UEFA Conference League, while more inconsistent form could see them end in midtable.

It will leave the owners with a decision to make over Pochettino and his future, and it seems that they are keeping tabs on potential alternatives.

Now, it has emerged that Chelsea are "monitoring" Liverpool and Barcelona managerial target Ruben Amorim should they part ways with Poch between now and the end of the season, with the Blues the latest in a long line of clubs eyeing up the Sporting boss.

Amorim has had plenty of suitors and is widely considered to be an excellent up-and-coming manager – Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta hailed him as an "incredible" coach when the two met last season.

As per Sky Sports Germany, the Blues are "monitoring" Amorim "should things not progress further with Pochettino", though they are behind both Liverpool and Barcelona. There is some discrepancy over just how much the release clause in his Sporting contract is this summer, with reports ranging from 10m to 20m euros (£8.5m-£17m), though it is believed the lower figure is the demand for clubs outside of Portugal.

He could prove perfect for Chelsea fans demanding more exciting play, with the Sporting boss preferring to use a 3-4-2-1 system in which he utilises two attacking midfielders behind a striker. Given Cole Palmer's importance to the Blues this season, Christopher Nkunku's ability as a no.10 when fit and Mykhailo Mudryk's raw potential, Amorim's system, which turns into a rather unique 3-2-5 in possession, could be perfect for the Blues faithful.

The Paulo Fonseca era at Milan started Saturday, but the manager won't be happy with the opening 70 minutes of the contest. The two late goals earned them a point, but their performance overall left much to be desired in the attack.

Fellow U.S. international Christian Pulisic was removed for Musah midway through the second half, while Morata made his way onto the pitch as well, with both claiming a late goal contribution.

With a long campaign ahead of them, there's plenty of room to grow, but it wasn't the most impressive start from Fonseca's crew.

For Musah, it's a massive boost for his confidence as he looks to push for a role in the starting XI going forward.

Reliable journalist: Liverpool are "keeping tabs" on "amazing" 23 year-old

Liverpool are interested in signing an "amazing" player in the summer transfer window, according to an update from reliable journalist David Lynch.

Edwards looking to make an impact back at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp may be leaving at Anfield in the coming months, acting as an almighty blow for the Reds, but the return of the influential Michael Edwards has at least represented a much-needed boost. The Englishman is back at Liverpool in a new role as CEO of Football, meaning he will have even more responsibilities and influence than he did during his time as sporting director.

One of the main jobs Edwards will have will be to work alongside incoming sporting director Richard Hughes, ensuring that the right players come in for Klopp's successor, whoever that turns out to be.

Plenty of individuals are being linked with moves to Merseyside at the moment, with Nico Williams, Pedro Neto and Florian Wirtz all mentioned as potential replacements should Mohamed Salah leave for the Saudi Pro League. It is believed that Edwards wouldn't stop the Liverpool legend from moving on, should his head be turned.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

The Reds have also been backed to seal the signing of Real Madrid attacking ace Rodrygo, should the Brazilian decide that this summer is the right time to leave the La Liga side. He has been a key man this season, scoring 10 goals in the league, but the possible signing of Kylian Mbappe could change his squad status.

Highly-rated Benfica midfielder Joao Neves is also reportedly on Liverpool's radar, but Manchester United are among the clubs providing competition for the young star's signature.

Liverpool monitoring "amazing" goalkeeper

According to Lynch on X, Liverpool are keen on signing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson this summer, ahead of a potential "reshuffle" in that area:

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Meanwhile, in his report for This Is Anfield, Lynch claims that "Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to attract interest after again impressing as Alisson‘s back-up this season and could be tempted by the lure of regular first-team football".

It does feel as though this summer is the right time for Kelleher to leave, considering Alisson is the undisputed first-choice 'keeper when fit. The Irishman has shown this season that he is far too good to be warming the substitutes' bench most weeks, and should be starting regularly for another Premier League team.

In Patterson, Liverpool could have a brilliant replacement for Kelleher, with the 23-year-old shining for Sunderland, not to mention adding to the homegrown quota if he joins the Reds. He has started all 41 Championship matches for the Black Cats this season, earning three Man of the Match awards from WhoScored.

The Englishman has been described as "amazing" by his former manager, Tony Mowbray, and given his age, there is still so much more to come. Whether he is happy to be on the bench regularly is a slight stumbling block, but Alisson does have injuries in him, and the idea of playing for Liverpool could be too great for him to ignore.

Celtic’s 10-goal academy star could be their next Mikey Johnston

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers made the decision to send Mikey Johnston out on loan and sign winger Nicolas Kuhn as his replacement during the January transfer window.

The German forward, signed on a permanent deal from Austrian side Rapid Wien, has enjoyed a solid start to life in Scotland, with a return of two goals and one assist in nine Scottish Premiership outings.

However, some may look at how well Johnston has been doing with West Bromwich Albion since his loan move to the English Championship and wonder what could have been for him at Parkhead, if Rodgers had given him more opportunities.

Celtic could, though, already have their next version of Johnston, who came up through the academy system in Glasgow, in B team star Ben Quinn.

Mikey Johnston's impressive form for the Baggies

The Ireland international worked his way through the youth teams with the Hoops and produced 13 goals and 12 assists in 92 appearances for the club before his loan move to the Baggies at the start of the year.

Since his move to England, Johnston has been on fire in the Championship with a terrific return of seven goals in 15 games, despite only starting 12 of those matches.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old attacker has significantly outperformed his xG and been a ruthless finisher in the final third for Carlos Corberan.

He has proven himself to be a clinical goalscorer from a wide position and Celtic could find their next goalscoring winger from the academy with Quinn, who has been in fantastic form this season.

Ben Quinn's goalscoring record for Celtic

The 19-year-old academy star, who was once described as a "direct" winger by Irish analyst Mark Broomy, has showcased his quality as a scorer over the last two campaigns with the B team.

Last season, Quinn racked up 11 goals and seven assists in 30 Lowland League games and one goal in two Challenge Cup appearances for the young Hoops.

Mikey Johnston

This term, the forward – who can play on either flank – has plundered ten goals and one assist in 22 Lowland League outings for the B team, along with one assist in five UEFA Youth League games.

In total, Quinn has fired in 22 goals and assisted a further eight in 52 Lowland League games for Celtic B since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

These statistics show that the Ireland U18 international has the quality to find the back of the net on a regular basis from a wide position, as his compatriot Johnston has for the Baggies, but it is now up to him to prove that it translates over to first-team football.

Rodgers could unearth Celtic's next version of Johnston, and allow the Hoops to cash in on the prolific West Brom loanee if the opportunity arises this summer, by offering Quinn a chance to showcase his ability in the final third for the senior side over the coming weeks and months.

Man Utd monitoring "exciting" teenager who could partner Mainoo for years

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has quite the task on his hands when it comes to transforming Manchester United, starting with this summer's transfer window and potentially finding the perfect partner for rising star Kobbie Mainoo.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils have gone from top four qualification and a Carabao Cup victory under Erik ten Hag to capitulating in a disappointing second season to leave the Dutchman's future in doubt, even despite another chance to win domestic silverware. That said, it's an important summer for the manager at Old Trafford, who could see several improvements made to his side.

By

Among those may well be Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, with the Red Devils reportedy willing to offer the centre-back a salary increase in order to lure him into an Old Trafford switch in the coming months. When it comes to solving United's defensive problems, welcoming Araujo would go a long way for Ten Hag.

It's not just the backline that could see summer improvements, either. Recent reports have also linked Frenkie de Jong with a move to the Premier League giants, as United look to finally land a long-term target in a deal for another Barcelona star. De Jong would provide an ideal balance between Mainoo and the future partner Ratcliffe may have lined up.

florian-neuhaus-frenkie-de-jong-west-ham

According to Fussball News, Manchester United sent scouts to watch Assan Ouedraogo ahead of a potential summer move to sign the 17-year-old Schalke midfielder. It remains to be seen just how much the Red Devils would have to splash out, but the prospect of 19-year-old Mainoo sitting alongside another teenage gem in Ouedraogo is certainly enticing enough to meet whatever Schalke's price-tag may be this summer.

They're not alone in their interest, however, with Newcastle United, Manchester City and teams in Germany and Italy also sending scouts to watch the young German in the 2.Bundesliga this season.

"Exciting" Ouedraogo can match Mainoo rise

It's a sign of the positive transformation that Ratcliffe is attempting at United that Ouedraogo is among the names being eyed this summer instead of players who are arguably past their prime in the middle of the park. Thinking about the future rather than players who may hand Ten Hag short-term improvements should be the focus, in planning that will go a long way in helping the Red Devils return to the top of English football for good.

Ouedraogo, at 17 years old, has earned links with teams of such calibre and, in-turn, the praise of Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, who described the midfielder as "exciting". Largely used as a box to box midfielder or in the number ten role this season, the teenager has scored twice and assisted twice in 15 league matches, and standing at 6 foot 2 should already have the physicality to complement Mainoo's guile.

Mainoo is a similarly exciting player and getting the best out of the England international should be one of the priorities at Old Trafford, which welcoming fellow young gem Ouedraogo would accelerate significantly, rather than falling back on the likes of Scott McTominay and Casemiro.

'Believe in big things' – Five things learned from Mauricio Pochettino's introduction as USMNT coach

Pochettino's confidence and ambition were on full display in his introductory USMNT news conference

Article continues below

Nearly a month after reportedly agreeing to take the job, Mauricio Pochettino finally arrived and was introduced Friday as the new U.S. men's national team coach in his first news conference in New York City's Hudson Yards.

“I am really happy to be here, because I think it’s an amazing project and challenge that we have ahead," Pochettino said. "I am so excited, I am so happy.”

U.S. Soccer had officially announced that it had hired Pochettino to replace the fired Gregg Berhalter Tuesday, less than 30 minutes before the USMNT played New Zealand in the second of two friendlies – they drew that match 1-1 after losing to Canada 2-1 on Saturday.

Pochettino wasn't at either match, but said Friday that he watched both and is eager to restore hope for a USMNT that crashed out of the Copa America and is less than two years away from hosting the 2026 World Cup, saying "If we believe all together we will achieve."

The excitement for the official unveiling was palpable, with USSF president Cindy Parlow Cone saying, “This is a monumental day for U.S. Soccer."

Here are five takeaways from Pochettino's inaugural comments as the new USMNT coach.

  • Embracing America

From Pochettino's opening comment, the veteran coach was confident and appeared genuine about the opportunity to jump into international management and to do so with the U.S.

"It was a dream for us," Pochettino said. "It is true that many years ago we start thinking about trying to manage a national team. Obviously, USA was on our list for many reasons… I'm so happy, I hope we can [put] on a great show here."

He added, "Our initiative is always to win, respect our values and try to evolve."

Pochettino stressed that he wants to build a playing style that aligns with America's identity as a country. In Pochettino's mind, that means playing on the front foot.

"We are in the USA, I think to convince our fans, it's about showing attractive football. Aesthetic is really important," Pochettino said. "We want to play nice football, good football, exciting football, attacking football."

The manager referenced American culture, especially sports, throughout his answers.

"You know USA have great athletes, you know the sport, it's a winning, winning future, winning mentality," Pochettino said. "In soccer, we need to be inspired by the many sports we have here."

He also pointed to the instant success of USWNT coach Emma Hayes. Just weeks after officially taking the job, Hayes led the U.S. to its fifth Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games.

"Emma for me is the best coach in the world… and the women’s team in history has won everything," said Pochettino, who like Hayes recently coached at Chelsea. "That’s what we need to match here.”

  • Loose, but needs some adjustment

If there was one thing that was very apparent, it was Pochettino's looseness. Here's a man who is in a country he's never managed before or likely lived in, interacting with media — most of whom he hasn't met previously. Yet, he was unflappable, showing some swagger. Even in instances in which aspects of a question were lost in translation, Pochettino was cool, chill and relaxed.

"We are here because we want to win. We are winners," Pochettino said with confidence. "We are successful, very successful coaching staff."

It's bravado that is earned after largely successful stops at Southampton, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, with a 51.7 percent win rate at those clubs.

Though he appeared to be more confident speaking in his native Spanish, there was an assured nature that was evident from the start of the conference.

He even managed to joke with GOAL US writer Ryan Tolmich after a question about all of the speculation and then ensuing delays prior to his official arrival.

"I'm happy and I hope you're happy too," he said with a laugh.

  • Getty

    Defining culture

Earlier this week, alarm bells were sounded after USMNT star Christian Pulisic said he hoped Pochettino brings a "culture that is willing to fight, that is willing to take risks."

As a result, a lot of the questions Friday were centered about the changes he would bring to the team from a culture standpoint.

Rather than have a preset expectation, Pochettino said his priority is instilling belief.

"We need to believe in big things," Pochettino said. "We need to believe that we can not just win one game, but the World Cup."

He said that he will be direct with his players and is aiming to kick off conversations with his team to learn more about the squad. When pressed on Pulisic point, Pochettino said that he understood the winger's frustrations and promised a higher level of intensity under his watch.

"The most important thing is to create something special," Pochettino said. "To feel something when you arrive to the national team… It's not because they just called me and we're going to play. We are going to compete. And competing is completely different than coming to play."

  • Dealing with limited window

Pochettino was asked about having just 10 international windows to prepare the Americans in advance the World Cup, which will kickoff in June 2026 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The Argentine confidently snapped his fingers and said "Football is like this."

Pochettino then scoffed at the notion that he won't have enough time to implement his strategy and approach, saying confidently "we have time."

"I think everyone thinks that there is no time to prepare and to arrive in our condition to the World Cup," he said. "What I want to tell you that I am in the opposite side. I believe that there is time enough. I don't want to make an excuse and don't want to create an excuse for the player to say, 'Well, yeah, we don't have time to buy into the new idea, the new philosophy, the new football'.

"I think the players are so intelligent and so talented, and they can, I think, play in a different way. For sure, I think we have time. We have time, and we need to really believe in seeing big things. We need to believe that we can win. We need to believe that we can win the World Cup."

Pochettino did mention that he and his coaching staff will need to be "clever" in the way they communicate things to the national team. He later stressed that he isn't going to treat exhibition matches as friendlies, as his aim is to raise intensity to ensure the proper preparation is in place.

"Friendlies aren't friendlies," Pochettino said. "Show your best for your country… that is everything."

He added, "We want all players that arrive Day 1 in training camp to think big."

Sky Sports: West Ham considering exciting new manager not being mentioned

West Ham United could make a sensational move for a high-profile David Moyes replacement, according to the latest reports.

Moyes on the brink

It seems to be one of the worst-kept secrets in football that David Moyes will leave West Ham after the conclusion of the Premier League season.

The Scot, whose football has become increasingly unpalatable for the West Ham faithful, is out of contract this summer as things stand. Though there had previously been talk of a new deal, the Guardian now reports that "there is an acceptance within West Ham that a change is needed" at the London Stadium.

As a result, Moyes is likely taking charge of his final games as Hammers boss in the coming weeks, with a place in Europe still a possibility, though they will be reliant on slip-ups from plenty around them.

Meanwhile, West Ham search for his replacement.

The Hammers have been linked with a huge number of managers in recent weeks, despite that news of Moyes' departure is yet to officially break. Julen Lopetegui, Ruben Amorim and Hansi Flick are all among those who have been mentioned in contention with the seemingly soon-to-be-vacant technical area at the London Stadium.

But a new name has now come to the fore.

Tuchel linked with move to east London

Now, in a sensational turn of events, former Chelsea and current Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel is wanted at the London Stadium.

The German will depart Bayern at the end of the current campaign, it has already been confirmed, after losing the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen, though he has reached the Champions League semi-final, where his side battled to a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in midweek.

He is expected to be replaced in Bavaria by Ralf Rangnick, with the Bundesliga outfit "discussing final details" over a move to take charge this summer.

That could spell good news for the Premier League side. As per Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, although Amorim remains "top of the list" for West Ham, they are also "keeping an eye on Tuchel's situation" should the opportunity arise to take the German to east London.

That is largely thanks to Sporting Director Tim Steidten, who "holds him in very high regard" and would be keen to have him leading the Hammers for the new season.

For his part, Tuchel is also "ready to return to the Premier League this summer", though it remains to be seen whether he will accept a move from a club of the size of Bayern Munich to West Ham, who look unlikely to be able to offer European football of any kind next season.

His appointment would certainly be a statement of intent from the Hammers, and it could be just what is needed to prevent their key players from looking over at the exit door this summer.
