Celtic: McLeish reacts to Mooy links

Former manager and Football Insider pundit Alex McLeish has been reacting to Celtic’s links to midfielder Aaron Mooy.

The Lowdown: Mooy links

Australian Ange Postecoglou officially took over as Celtic manager earlier this month, and it hasn’t taken long for players from his native country to be linked with a move to Parkhead.

The Hoops are reportedly keen on goalkeeper Mat Ryan, whereas Australian news outlet The World’s Game believes Celtic could make an approach for Mooy.

The midfielder, capable of playing in a defensive, central or attacking role, is currently with Shanghai SIPG in China after leaving Brighton last summer.

The Latest: McLeish reacts

McLeish was talking to Football Insider and brought up the links to Mooy, describing the former Manchester City man as a ‘terrific’ player.

“I saw them linked with Aaron Mooy. Did he start at Man City?

“Then he went to Huddersfield and then Brighton. He’s a terrific player and the type of player Celtic should be going for.

“He’s got energy to burn. Any time I’ve seen the guy, he’s very difficult to dispossess on the ball.

“I’m not saying he’s a dribbler but when he gets the ball and just when you think you’re going to tackle him, he’s already given it to somebody else. One of his teammates gets it and normally it’s a good pass.

“He is a guy with great football nous.”

The Verdict: A huge pay cut would be required

If Celtic are indeed keen on Mooy and do make an approach, then the midfielder may need to take a big pay cut to return to Scotland.

The former St Mirren man agreed to a $180,000-a-week deal in China which is the equivalent of £130,000-a-week.

You’d expect that would need to be cut considerably if he wants to reunite with Postecoglou in Glasgow, with Celtic’s highest earner on the books now Callum McGregor on £20,000-a-week.

It looks set to be a busy summer for Postecoglou and the Hoops, but a deal for Mooy may not be realistic unless he takes a huge salary hit.

LFC fans bemoan Florian Neuhaus update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been bemoaning a report claiming the Reds’ interest in midfielder Florian Neuhaus has cooled.

Jurgen Klopp could be about to embark on another busy summer transfer window, as he looks to brings a freshness to his squad.

After a long, tough and injury-hit 2020/21 season, signing a number of new faces could be exactly what is required, as Liverpool look to win back the Premier League title next year.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Gini Wijnaldum is one player who is heading out of the Anfield exit door, however, and the influential Dutchman may need to be replaced.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Neuhaus is a player who has been continually linked with a summer move to Liverpool, having scored six goals and registered five assists in the Bundesliga last season.

According to the Liverpool Echo [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], however, the Reds’ interest in the 24-year-old has cooled, with a move now potentially looking less likely.

Liverpool see bid rejected for Coman

A major update has emerged on Bayern Munich forward Kingsley Coman, regarding Liverpool’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Goal’s Ronan Murphy, Liverpool have had a £30m (€35m) bid rejected by Bayern Munich for winger Kingsley Coman. The Reds are keen on a deal for the forward but have had their opening salvo swatted away by the German giants.

The report claims that the Bundesliga outfit are holding out for a fee in the region of £43m (€50m) before allowing him to leave the Allianz this summer.

Fans will be buzzing

Liverpool fans will be buzzing with this news for several reasons. For starters, this report states that the club have already firmed up their interest in the French international. This means that The Reds have already moved past the interest stage and this is not a transfer rumour tentatively linking Jurgen Klopp’s side with a player, but instead, one that is developing quickly and seemingly moving further down the line.

Therefore, Reds fans can afford to get excited about the potential of Coman arriving at Anfield ahead of next season, as a bid for his services is a signal of intent from Michael Edwards. The sporting director has already sanctioned one offer for the forward and that could suggest that another one is on the way as Liverpool attempt to haggle down Bayern’s £43m valuation.

Coman could be an excellent addition to Klopp’s squad, having built a fine reputation in recent years whilst playing in Germany. His teammate Thomas Muller once hailed the “extraordinary” wing wizard for his skills with the ball and claimed that he could be solid gold for Bayern.

He told the official Bundesliga website:

“We have many players who have very good qualities. We know that Kingsley has extraordinary skills that aren’t easy to find. If he puts his foot down on the gas – and he has incredible horsepower – every opponent has a tough time against him.

“He worked the left flank well. He’s always been fleet-footed. If he can now add chances that lead to goals then he is solid gold to us.”

This is another reason why fans should be buzzing with this news as the £43m dynamo could add an extra attacking threat to Klopp’s ranks.

Coman has produced 41 goals and 50 assists during his time with Bayern and knows what it takes to play for a big club, having also played for Juventus and PSG at first-team level.

This suggests that he would not be overawed by the prospect of playing for Liverpool in the Premier League and that he could hit the ground running.

There’s currently a £13m difference between Liverpool’s opening bid and Bayern’s valuation but Reds’ fans will almost certainly trust Edwards to work his magic to get a fee agreed, and if he does do just that, Liverpool could well be bringing in a high-level player this summer.

Everton transfer update on Richarlison

Many Everton fans have been flocking to a transfer update involving Richarlison.

Speaking on his Twitch channel (via The Everton End), Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a number of clubs are interested in signing the Brazil international in the summer transfer window.

However, Rafa Benitez is going to try and talk to him to convince him to stay at Goodison Park.

Richarlison did not have his best season in 2020/21, scoring a mere criticised by a portion of the Merseyside club’s supporters for some of his displays.

Given that he is still just 24 years of age, and currently valued at £49.5m by Transfermarkt, some Toffees feel as if this summer’s window could be the perfect opportunity to get big money for the forward which could then be reinvested in the squad.

Interest intensifies in Antonee Robinson

Interest is growing in Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that Manchester City are lining up a move for the 23-year-old in the summer transfer window, with a number of other Premier League sides also thought to be keeping a close eye on the situation of the defender ahead of a potential move.

It is reported that Fulham would demand a fee of at least £10m to part with the USA international this summer, who saw a move to AC Milan fall through in early 2020 after failing a medical with the Serie A side.

Big mistake

While it may be easier said than done for Fulham to reject the advances for Robinson this summer, particularly from a side with a wealth of financial resource such as Man City, it is not a difficult argument to make that selling the left-back would be something of a mistake by Marco Silva this summer.

Indeed, despite Fulham’s relegation from the Premier League last season, the 23-year-old highly impressed over his 28 league appearances for Scott Parker’s side, helping his team keep four clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 1.9 clearances and winning five duels per game.

The left-back also chipped in for the Cottagers in a creative capacity, creating four big chances for his teammates and making an average of 1.1 key passes per league fixture.

These returns saw the man Parker dubbed a “fearless” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.89, ranking him as Fulham’s 12th-best performer in the top flight last season.

As such, while an offer of £10m may be tempting for the club to accept, particularly after losing the Premier League revenue of last season, should Silva wish to go on and secure an immediate return to the top tier next term, retaining the services of Robinson would appear to significantly increase the club’s chances of achieving this feat.

And, while the money would come in handy for the club in the short term, if Fulham were to restore their status as a Premier League club next summer, the windfall of the Premier League cash would greatly outweigh the fee received for selling Robinson – leading us to believe it is well worth the gamble of rejecting any offers for the left-back for at least one more year.

Tottenham enter En-Nesyri transfer race

Spurs are interested in a deal to bring Youssef En-Nesyri to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), who claim that Spurs have joined West Ham United in monitoring the situation of the Sevilla centre-forward ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

It is reported that Julen Lopetegui’s side require a big-money sale of one of their more valuable players in order to fund their own transfer business, and that, if the LaLiga side fail to sell Jules Kounde, they could be tempted into parting ways with the Morocco international.

However, En-Nesyri himself is not thought to be sold on the idea of a switch to Tottenham in the current transfer window, and is instead hoping that “one of the greats” will make a move for him ahead of next season.

Nuno would love him

While it would appear that a Tottenham move for En-Nesyri would be a difficult deal to get over the line this summer, it is undeniable that the 24-year-old would make a fantastic addition to Nuno Espirito Santo’s attacking options next season, as well as generally being a player the Portuguese boss would love to have at the club.

Indeed, the £49k-per-week man scored 18 goals and set up six big chances over 38 LaLiga appearances for Lopetegui’s side last season, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 0.4 key passes per league fixture.

These metrics saw the striker earn an impressive average SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as Sevilla’s eighth-best player in the Spanish top-flight, playing a key role in his team securing a Champions League spot via a fourth-place finish in LaLiga.

However, it was not only in domestic competition that En-Nesyri impressed, with the 24-year-old also bagging six Champions League goals over eight appearances in the tournament, with his displays earning him an average SofaScore rating of 7.33 – the third-highest rating of any Sevilla player.

As such, with a clinical season in Spain behind him, the centre-forward Euan McTear claimed was “like Benzema” would certainly appear to be a signing Nuno would love to get done this summer, particularly as Harry Kane has been heavily linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, with the £36m-rated man appearing to not be overly enthused by a move to Spurs, perhaps the 47-year-old Tottenham boss should turn his focus elsewhere in the summer transfer window.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Remi Matthews deal

Crystal Palace announced the signing of former Sunderland goalkeeper Remi Matthews on Tuesday.

And, as to be anticipated, the confirmed transfer had a number of Palace fans talking on social media.

The Eagles revealed that both Wayne Hennessey and Stephen Henderson have left the club, with Matthews now brought in as a third ‘keeper alongside Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland.

Matthews has signed a two-year contract at Selhurst Park and becomes the club’s second summer signing alongside Michael Olise.

The 27-year-old has made over 100 senior appearances during his career, representing Bolton Wanderers, Hamilton, Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers and Sunderland.

Matthews was pictured in the club’s new goalkeeping jersey, with the club sharing a closer look at the top later in the day.

WHU fans rage at Origi news

West Ham United fans are unhappy after it was suggested by reliable club insider ExWHUemployee that Divock Origi is the club’s back-up plan if they fail to sign Tammy Abraham this summer.

David Moyes completed a fantastic job last term as he led the Hammers to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and a place in the Europa League in the process.

What makes that success even more remarkable is the fact the Hammers only had one recognised striker in Michail Antonio for the second half of the season after Sebastien Haller was sold to Ajax.

As they compete on four fronts this coming campaign, they cannot afford to have only one centre-forward. They have been linked with Abraham, but according to ExWHUemployee, the Irons will move for 26-year-old Origi if they can’t capture the Chelsea man.

The news was shared on Twitter by @WestHam_Central, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Nat Phillips: West Ham eye bargain swoop

West Ham United are the latest side to be linked to Nathaniel Phillips this transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (21st July, 15:33), the Irons are among the teams keen on signing the 24-year-old, though they face plenty of competition for his signature.

Premier League rivals Newcastle United, Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion are credited with an interest, whilst Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen are said to have sounded out Phillips over a potential return to Germany, where he impressed on loan to Stuttgart in 2019/20.

An official bid is yet to be made for the Reds centre-back.

An absolute steal

Last month, The Athletic’s ever-reliable James Pearce claimed that Liverpool had placed a £15m asking price on Phillips and this could represent some stunning value for money.

They’re in no rush to sell him either, though the 6 foot 3 colossus may not want to be the fourth or fifth choice in the pecking order come next month.

£15m has to be considered a steal, considering Burnley have recently paid £12m to Stoke City for Nathan Collins, who has never featured in the Premier League before.

Phillips enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2020/21, thanks to the unfortunate injury list piling up at Anfield. And he made the most of his opportunities with some impressive displays, notably a clean sheet against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final.

He also started in both league fixtures against the Hammers, where he kept Sebastien Haller and then Michail Antonio quiet. In fact, he ensured the latter had a torrid time in their 3-1 defeat.

As per SofaScore, the 31-year-old forward was restricted to just one shot on target, whilst he only pulled off one successful dribble from three attempts and lost 66% of his duels.

It’s no wonder Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has lauded him as a “monster”.

Valued at €30m (£26m) by CIES Football Observatory, Phillips could be an absolute bargain at just £15m, not to mention his mooted £64k-per-week wages, which is less than what even Winston Reid is on at the London Stadium (£70k-per-week).

It’s believed that Moyes is keen to bolster his backline, so the Liverpool star could be an intriguing option to consider before next month’s deadline.

The Scotsman must now look to urge a swoop for Phillips this summer.

Newcastle transfer update on McCarthy

Newcastle United are reportedly thought to be a ‘huge lure’ for transfer target James McCarthy.

The Lowdown: McCarthy wanted

TEAMtalk reported back in May that the St. James’ Park faithful had the opportunity to sign McCarthy on a free transfer once his deal at Crystal Palace had expired.

The North East club were reportedly looking closely at his situation, and the Republic of Ireland international is now a free agent.

The Latest: Newcastle ‘huge lure’

As per 90min, the opportunity to work with Graeme Jones on Tyneside is a ‘huge lure’ for McCarthy, of whom Jones is a ‘big fan’ of.

Celtic had previously held talks with the central midfield player, while both West Ham United and Burnley are also credited with an interest.

The Verdict: Sign

Steve Bruce needs to add more depth to his squad, and there may not be a better opportunity than to sign McCarthy up for no transfer fee.

Of course, wages would have to be discussed, given that he earned £50,000-per-week while at the Eagles, but the spending is virtually minimal for a player so experienced in the Premier League.

McCarthy has played in no fewer than 272 games in total across all competitions over the last 12 consecutive campaigns in the top flight, for both Wigan Athletic and Everton as well as at Selhurst Park (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, the 30-year-old could be a player that would work well under Jones and Bruce, bringing experience to the heart of midfield.
