'His time will come' – Xabi Alonso issues encouraging Endrick update as Brazil striker nears return from injury

Xabi Alonso has provided a positive update on Endrick as the Brazilian striker has return from injury. The teenager was sidelined since September with a hamstring problem and faces fierce competition for minutes at Real Madrid. After missing the Club World Cup and the early season, his comeback offers hope of adding depth to Madrid’s forward line.

Endrick’s road back after injury setback

The Brazilian forward has been working his way back after a hamstring injury ruled him out of the Club World Cup and the start of the new season. Despite being fit enough to make the squad for recent matches, Alonso has been cautious with his reintroduction, stressing the importance of finding the right moment for his return.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesAlonso confident Endrick’s chance will come

Alonso admitted Endrick has trained well for weeks and confirmed that he could feature imminently. Alonso acknowledged the competition for attacking spots but insisted the 19-year-old will get his chance, describing his return as a matter of timing rather than readiness.

“He has a chance to be a starter. He’s coming off a slightly longer injury, but he’s been training well for a few weeks now and it’s just a matter of finding the right context in the game for him to come on," said the Spaniard ahead of the match against Villarreal.

He added: “He has a goal-scoring instinct, a brutal finish. There’s just a lot of competition, but his time will come.”

Rising competition in Madrid’s crowded attack

With Gonzalo Garcia shining in the Club World Cup and established names like Kylian Mbappe already leading the line, Endrick faces a tough battle for regular minutes. His patience will be tested, especially as Los Blancos look to balance domestic duties with European commitments. The teenager turned down loan options to fight for his place, showing his determination to prove himself at the Bernabeu.

AFPNext challenge looms with Villarreal clash on horizon

After their heavy 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid, Los Blancos responded with a convincing 5-0 win over Kairat Almaty in the Champions League. Villarreal await in La Liga, and Alonso will hope to integrate Endrick gradually into a squad regaining rhythm. Madrid see his development as a long-term project, with this season viewed as a stepping stone in his growth.

Gladiators go to the top after Hasan Nawaz stars in tense win over United

In a match that could have gone either way, United’s fielders shelled three catches in the final over for Gladiators to get over the line

Rvel Zahid04-May-2025

Hasan Nawaz led Quetta Gladiators to victory with an unbeaten 41-ball 64•PCB

A compelling PSL 2025 game with drama of epic proportions, where both teams slipped, recovered, and then stumbled again, kept fans on the edge of their seats before Quetta Gladiators held their nerve and seized a thrilling win over Islamabad United, though not without the help of three regulation dropped catches in the final over. Hasan Nawaz kept his cool to eventually eke out the win in the nail-biting finale. After deciding to bowl first, Gladiators kept a lid on the scoring and restricted United to a middling 157 for 9. That said, they allowed a recovery in the last phase of the innings after having them at 91 for 6 at the end of the 13th over. Faheem Ashraf’s four-wicket haul cut through the middle-order, and the floodgates were opened thereafter.United, who made six changes to the side and, despite losing three in a row now, need only one win to get into the playoffs, found a hero in Mohammad Nawaz, who added 49 to the board in a sparkling rearguard act, bringing the game to life in the process. And that gave the United bowlers something to play with.Gladiators started off with a flier as Finn Allen slammed a barrage of boundaries in the powerplay, but his ebullience only lasted 13 balls, as he was beaten by Naseem Shah’s pace amid a penetrative opening burst. Saud Shakeel started brightly, but his stay at the crease was cut short as he slashed one straight to point in the third over. That’s when Rilee Rossouw injected urgency before a mix-up with Hasan in the tenth over sent the panic alarms ringing in the Gladiators camp, and the chase started to crumble.Mohammad Nawaz hit five sixes in his 34-ball 49•PCB

The 52-run stand put Gladiators in a good situation, but not for long. Mark Chapman was dismissed on two, and United’s belief grew while the tension was palpable in the field and it seemed a chaotic implosion was brewing.Hasan, however, proved to be a thorn in their path as he showed off his temperament and range with an unbeaten 64 in 41 balls. He wasn’t in a rush and played sensibly, finding a balance between aggression and calm manoeuvring of the ball into the gaps, thereby taking the game right down to the wire with some able support from Mohammad Wasim. The game kept swinging like a pendulum, but ultimately the fielding lapses in the final over, bowled by Muhammad Shahzad, turned the tide in Gladiators’ favour.Hasan got two lives in the first two balls, first shelled by Shahzad off his own bowling, and then by Salman Irshad at short third. On the third delivery, he clubbed a six over long-off and then there was another dropped chance as the keeper and deep third blocked each other’s views and spilt a skier even as the batters added two more runs. Then, on the penultimate delivery, Hasan finished the game by heaving a six over backward square. With the win, Gladiators displaced United from the top spot on the points table and gave a boost to their net run-rate, while United, after having sped to five wins consecutively, have suffered three defeats on the bounce now.

I played against Drogba and Henry, but "powerful" Premier League icon was toughest

Didier Drogba and Thierry Henry represent an iconic Premier League era. It was the era of the long sleeves, the T90 ball that would fly in all kinds of directions and, of course, some of the greatest rivalries that English football has ever seen.

It’s only right that both Drogba and Henry featured in such an era. The former, so often the man for the big occasion at Chelsea, sits alongside some of the greats in Stamford Bridge history. Henry, meanwhile, is arguably the greatest Premier League player of all time. The Frenchman, at his best, was simply absurd.

So many have been so full of praise for both. Legendary ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger once told reporters: “People like Thierry Henry [also] had exceptional qualities. They would run 100 metres in 11 seconds when everybody else did it in 12.5 or 13. So if today they are running it in 12, they are still quicker.

20 Best Wingers in Premier League History

Where does Mohamed Salah rank in the greatest Premier League wide men?

ByCharlie Smith May 23, 2025

“They start from a huge potential and that’s why at that age they can still survive, because they have the football intelligence. They had exceptional physical qualities at the start.”

Wenger’s counterpart, Jose Mourinho, has rarely hidden his admiration for Drogba, meanwhile. The so-called ‘Special One’ formed quite the partnership with the forward during his time at Chelsea.

As good as they both are, though, Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic named an alternative player as the toughest opponent that he’s ever played against.

Man Utd icon Vidic reveals Rooney was toughest opponent

For all the great battles that he had with Drogba and Henry, Vidic’s toughest games often came on the training pitch against Wayne Rooney. The former Manchester United defender was asked by Rio Ferdinand to pick his toughest opponent between the aforementioned three and quickly named his old teammate.

It should come as no shock that the Serbian defender struggled against Rooney. The former England forward is one of the best that the Premier League has ever seen – scoring 208 goals and assisting another 103 in an incredible career.

Vidic will be thankful that he only had to square off against Rooney in training, rather than in a competitive outing at club level. Other centre-backs didn’t have the same luck and were soon put to the sword.

Those three were certainly the main men of their era when it came to strikers in the Premier League. Although all icons in their own right, Vidic’s verdict suggests that Rooney left a mark on those both inside Manchester United and the rest of English football.

Gary Neville reveals the only two things you need to get a result v Arsenal

Gary Neville has slammed Arsenal and Mikel Arteta’s tactics in the wake of the 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

Gunners rescue late draw against Man City

Although the Gunners will be disappointed not to take all three points against Man City, they will be pleased they managed to rescue a late draw, with Gabriel Martinelli equalising in injury time.

However, Arteta’s side have been widely criticised for viewing draws against Premier League title rivals as acceptable results in the past, and they are now five points behind Liverpool, who continued their perfect start to the season in the Merseyside derby.

In fairness, the north Londoners have already had some tough fixtures, but Arteta will be wary of not allowing a sizeable gap to open up too early, given that his side did not manage to recover from a relatively slow start last season.

Arsenal set Real Madrid price tag after blunt William Saliba reply to new contract offer

The Frenchman is a “dream” signing for Xabi Alonso’s side.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 20, 2025

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast after the game, however, the former Manchester United defender appeared to point the finger at the manager for his tactical approach, which heavily focuses on dominating set-pieces. He claims all you need to deal with Arteta’s methods are tall players and a physically dominant goalkeeper who clears and claims crosses.

Neville said: “They’re a one-trick pony. Set-pieces are just such a large percentage of their chances and goals that you end up in a situation where you’ve just got to have big players in the box and a goalkeeper who comes and punches, and if you don’t you’re gonna get beat up on corners and set-pieces and free-kicks.

“Arsenal are not creating enough chances in these types of games. They’re scoring lots of goals from set-pieces, six out of their nine goals before this game have come from set-pieces, one of them was a penalty. Now that’s great that they’re good at set-pieces, but it’s not good enough.”

Neville right to call Arteta's tactics into question

In the post-match interview, Arteta appeared to suggest his side could have taken more from the match, saying: “At the very least [we deserved a point]. I’m so proud of my players, the way we played, the way we dominated almost every aspect of the game. Very disappointed not to win the game.”

However, it is difficult to agree, given that Viktor Gyokeres was largely anonymous, receiving very little service throughout the match.

Having recorded a total xG of 0.97, compared to 0.96 from City, a draw was probably a fair result, and as pointed out by Neville, Arsenal need to start creating more from open play.

After trailing for so long, Arteta will be happy his side managed to force their way back into the game, but the five-point gap that’s already opened up will be concerning, particularly considering the fixtures don’t get any easier, with Newcastle United away up next in the Premier League.

Peter Crouch crying laughing about what he's heard on 6 ft 6 Newcastle star

Former England striker Peter Crouch has spotted a striking similarity to his playing days after Newcastle sealed the signings of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle finally end striker saga

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has finally landed long-term target Wissa after losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool on a dramatic final day of the summer transfer window.

Brentford’s 28-year-old DR Congo international, who was born in France, has joined the Magpies for an undisclosed fee, which is understood could eventually amount to £55million, and will wear the club’s famous number nine shirt.

Wissa’s efforts to force his way out of Brentford have not differed too starkly from the tactics employed by Isak in engineering his move, but one way or the other that Magpies now have their new look strike partnership.

Indeed, his addition to an attacking pool already boosted by the signing of Germany international Nick Woltemade, who arrived at the weekend, gives Howe plenty of options for new systems and formations, though fans will have to endure an international break before they see their new faces in action.

“I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League,” Wissa said as he posed for pictures on Monday in Alan Shearer’s iconic number nine shirt.

“I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”

Woltemade and Wissa anointed the new Crouch and Defoe

Newcastle targeted Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike earlier in the summer and the plan was to use the Frenchman in a front two with Isak, but whether or not Howe is intent on doing the same with Woltemade and Wissa remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure though, the pair bring plenty of complementary traits to the table, with Woltemade’s massive 6 foot 6 frame sure to be a focal point for the likes of Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga to aim at, while Wissa’s industriousness and ability to be in the right place at the right time was evident in his partnerships with both Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney.

And Crouch, who formed an iconic partnership with Jermain Defoe, has reacted on X to the suggestion that the Newcastle pair could be the next generation’s little and large duo.

Standing at 6 foot 7, Crouch is slightly taller than the 6 foot 6 Woltemade, but like Crouch the Germany international is known for having the old cliche of ‘good feet for a big man’.

Wissa is two inches taller than the 5 foot 7 Defoe, but if he can replicate the goalscoring record of the former Tottenham and Sunderland legend, who is the tenth best Premier League goalscorer of all time with 156, there won’t be anyone on Tyneside complaining about his transfer fee.

Kohli vs Rahul in Delhi as RCB take on DC

In another subplot, Mitchell Starc will be up against Josh Hazlewood

Kumble: ‘Kohli crucial for RCB especially while batting first’

Big picture: Virat Kohli in DelhiVirat Kohli caused chaos during his last visit to the Arun Jaitley Stadium, turning a routine Ranji Trophy fixture into a three-day celebration. While the fanfare remains, those backing Kohli will also cheer vociferously for a Delhi Capitals (DC) win.Kohli is third on the Orange Cap list, averaging 65.33 – second only to his 2016 run where Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made the final. Five of his six half-centuries have come in wins, and since 2022, he’s contributed the second-highest percentage of runs (26.12) in wins, behind Shubman Gill.Kohli comes to the Kotla with happy IPL memories. He has scored 483 runs in ten innings at an average of 69 and a strike rate of 145.5 – his best at any venue where he has played more than five games. RCB – unbeaten in five away games – will be hoping for another special knock and to steer clear of their three-way tie with Gujarat Titans and DC on 12 points.Related

Kohli’s dominance is only half the story. In KL Rahul, DC have their own formidable force, a player who has completely redefined his T20 approach. Gone is the focus on playing the long game; Rahul now prioritises boundaries and aggression. When these two teams met earlier in the season, Rahul guided DC home with a statement performance at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.Halfway through the season, he is DC’s top scorer with 323 runs at a blistering strike rate of 153.80, heading into the RCB clash on the back of an unbeaten 57 against his former side, Lucknow Super Giants.Rahul’s stellar form has carried DC’s top order in Faf du Plessis’ absence, following a groin injury. The South African has recovered and will be available for this game. With Karun Nair, Abishek Porel, and Axar Patel all in sparkling form, DC have the capability to match RCB’s batting might.2:23

Outside of Kohli vs Rahul, the match also promises another subplot between two of the most decorated fast bowlers: Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. As far as the playoff chances are concerned, there’s plenty at stake. Will Kuldeep and Nigam decide the game against RCB?

In the spotlight: Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal PandyaKuldeep Yadav has been DC’s ace, pairing control with 12 wickets at an economy of 6.3 – the joint-best with Varun Chakravarthy. He has gone wicketless just once and has played a key role in DC’s strong middle-overs showing, where they concede only 8.4 per over. He has been excellent at home, exemplified by his 2 for 23 against Mumbai Indians in an innings where they posted 205.In his ninth season, Krunal Pandya has equalled his best IPL haul with 12 wickets – all in wins and joint-second-most among spinners. His double-blow, backed by Suyash Sharma’s control, set up the win against Rajasthan Royals three nights ago. Not as feared as the Varuns or Narines, the RCB duo remains crucial with the playoffs in sight. The big questionKey stats Rahul has dominated Hazlewood in the IPL, scoring 76 runs off him at a strike rate of 173, with just one dismissal in five innings. Starc has proven expensive in the powerplay – conceding at 11.40. This has contributed to DC struggling overall – their economy of 9.8 is the third-worst in the league. RCB have won all games where Kohli has scored a half-century this season. Since 2024, RCB have won nine out of 11 games where he has scored 50 or more. Tim David’s strike rate of 212 is second-best behind Heinrich Klaasen among batters who’ve faced at least 30 balls. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is just three wickets away from overtaking Piyush Chawla (192) as the IPL’s second-highest wicket-taker. Axar Patel’s strike rate of 202 against spin is the second highest among batters who have faced at least 50 balls this season. Nicholas Pooran tops the list by striking at 268.Pitch and conditionsBoth games at Kotla have been high scoring, but spinners like Kuldeep and Vipraj Nigam, who’ve tossed the ball up and turned it, have earned wickets. Spin has claimed 13 wickets, conceding 9.1 runs per over, compared to 10.2 by pacers. With dew likely, the team batting first will need a big total. With both sides evenly matched, predicting the par-score is not easy.Quotes”Last year, it was really flat and nice, and didn’t really bounce that much. This year, it’s a little bit more inconsistent, a bit harder to get used to, and might take some more time for batters to get into their innings.”

Phil Simmons calls for 'patience' towards 'in transition' Bangladesh

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons requested “patience” from fans following a loss to Zimbabwe in the first Test in Sylhet last week, adding that the team ‘in transition’ needs time to achieve their goals.Since October 2024, when Simmons took over as head coach, Bangladesh have won just one out of the five Tests and one out of eight ODIs, apart from winning a T20I series against West Indies. Bangladesh’s loss to Zimbabwe in the first Test also extended their losing streak at home to six matches.”I ask for patience from the Bangladesh people, I know how passionate they are for the team to do better,” Simmons said on the eve of the second Test in Chattogram.”I request for patience. We are trying to put the right things in place to get us to play better. We pick players. They play at their tempo. The aggressive part comes into [things like] running between the wickets, attitude when you get to the wicket and attitude on the field. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to score at five runs an over. Some days you can bat at five, other days you will bat at two or three [runs an over].”Simmons said the instruction to the team has been to play a “positive brand” of cricket without being careless.Related

“I think we know that as a unit we didn’t bat properly in the first innings [against Zimbabwe when they were bowled out for 191]. We put ourselves in problems. We want to play a brand of positive Test cricket, not just going for 200 runs in a day. The word “transition” is mentioned in the press. It will take a bit of time to reach where we want to be.”My message to them is that there were a few loose shots and some soft dismissals but we need to make sure that we improve as we go along. We can’t have this for one, two or three Tests [in a row]Bangladesh have also been hit by player unavailability, specifically in their bowling attack. Taskin Ahmed is recuperating from injuries while Nahid Rana will play in the PSL instead of the second Test. Simmons said that the likes of Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed and Tanzim Hasan will be able to handle the load.”Our pacers have skills,” Simmons said. “Hasan has taken five-fors in Pakistan, which is not far different from here. Khaled has done well. [Tanzim] Sakib hasn’t played that much but we know what he can bring to the attack. We still have the skills and depth from the seamers.”I think [Tanzim] can shine in any format, with the lengths he bowls. He is deceptive with his pace. We have seen it with the white ball. He hits the stumps regularly. He gets people caught behind regularly. He also brings a bit of batting, which is always good for the team.”Off the field, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is grappling with allegations of financial discrepancies and a player’s suspension – Towhid Hridoy. Two board employees have tendered their resignation as well. Simmons said the coaching staff has been trying their best to keep the “outside noise” away from the dressing room.”As coaches, the outside noise is one of the things that we try to keep away from them. We are going into a Test match so in the final meeting this evening, it is one of the things that we have to make sure. It is about Bangladesh cricket for the next five days; not anything else that’s going on outside.”
