Order of demerit: Coaching staff penalised at the IPL

Nehra was not the first member of a coaching unit to get in the match officials’ bad books

ESPNcricinfo staff08-May-2025Ashish NehraGT vs MI, IPL 2025After rain at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) had the win in the pocket if there was no further play. It was getting close to cut-off time, and GT were understandably agitated, willing the groundstaff to dry things up quickly and get at least one more over in. Nehra, the GT coach, wasn’t only going to will them on. He was there, speaking to the groundstaff and the match officials animatedly to get the covers off quick. ESPNcricinfo understands that the demerit point and fine (25% of his match fee) he was slapped with was for his conduct at that tense juncture in the game. Happily, for Nehra, GT got a win out of it in the end.The tension of the Super Over got too much for Munaf Patel to handle•Getty ImagesMunaf PatelDC vs RR, IPL 2025Nehra wasn’t the first from the coaching staff to get pulled up for crossing a line during a match in IPL 2025, his former India team-mate Munaf beat him to it. This was during the Super Over in the game between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), when Munaf collected a demerit point and coughed up a 25% match fee fine, the same as Nehra. While the IPL didn’t specify what Munaf’s offence was, he was spotted arguing with a match official when he was not allowed to send a reserve player into the middle to pass on a message. Like with Nehra, Munaf’s team won that Super Over.MI’s batting coach Kieron Pollard added a responsibility to his job profile in IPL 2024, that of DRS coach•Mumbai IndiansKieron PollardMI vs PBKS, IPL 2024Pollard, the MI batting coach, and Tim David were pulled up and fined 20% of their match fees during the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in New Chandigarh. Sitting in the dugout, they were found suggesting batter Suryakumar Yadav to review a wide call. The review was allowed and MI got the decision in their favour. But later, the IPL sought footage from the broadcaster to check for the sequence of events leading up to the review, and found that Pollard and David had asked Suryakumar to take the review. As per the IPL playing conditions, the two batters can consult with each other before taking a review but cannot receive help from the outside. Not a scene we’re used to seeing: Pravin Amre, the DC assistant coach, out on the field speaking with the umpire•BCCIPravin AmreDC vs RR, IPL 2022Three seasons ago, before Munaf had joined the DC back room, there was Pravin Amre there, as an assistant coach. And he was banned for a game for his part in the chaotic events in the final over of the game, when he was spotted walking into the playing area and speaking to on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Nikhil Patwardhan. It all blew up after the third delivery of the final over of DC’s chase of 222. RR bowler Obed McCoy bowled a high full toss, which Rovman Powell pulled for six. But DC felt it should have been called a no-ball for height. Powell and non-striker Kuldeep Yadav asked the umpires about it, and Rishabh Pant, the DC captain, and others joined in, gesticulating from the dugout. Pant then appeared to ask Amre to go and speak to the umpire, which he did. Both Pant and Amre were slapped with 100% match fee fines, but Amre had to also serve the ban. What’s worse, DC lost the game by 15 runs.

Green's return brings into focus Australia's big selection calls

The allrounder begins his county stint with an eye on returning as a batter for the World Test Championship final – but it’s not simple

Marnus in or out? Finch and Clarke pick their WTC final XIs

More than six months after Cameron Green last took the field, in an ODI at Chester-le-Street where he sent down a bouncer barrage as Harry Brook stamped an early mark as England captain, he will return to the field on Friday for Gloucestershire when they face Kent following the back surgery which ruled him out of the 2024-25 home season. In a deal funded by a mystery benefactor, Green is available for five County Championship matches over the next six weeks – where he will be captained by Western Australia team-mate Cameron Bancroft – leading into Australia’s World Test Championship final clash with South Africa at Lord’s which is followed by three Tests in the West Indies.Barring any setbacks on his return, Green is expected to be involved in both those squads but beyond that there are some tricky decisions for Australia’s selectors to make about how he slots back into the XI give his bowling will remain on ice until shortly before the Ashes at the end of the year.Related

  • Hazlewood's successful return likely to leave Boland unlucky for WTC final

  • Labuschagne to reset after leanest run-scoring summer

  • Green nears return ahead of WTC final selection race

  • WTC final may not be Konstas' route back to Test side

While the selectors may not be overly concerned about the volume of runs scored by Green in the next few weeks – the philanthropic Gloucestershire member would no doubt like a return on his investment – after a lengthy period out of the game, he will need to show some sort of form given the squeeze for batting places. The selectors will name the squads partway through Green’s county stay but if he looked especially rusty, it could question the merit of bringing him straight back, although his known qualities will stand him in good stead. The last time Green played Test cricket was against New Zealand early in 2024. He batted at No. 4 and made a masterful, match-winning 174 not out in Wellington where many other batters struggled. Things have changed since then, however, with Steven Smith returning to the middle order and producing his best returns for a number of years while Beau Webster has made a promising start at No. 6 having replaced Mitchell Marsh in the allrounder’s role.Cameron Green was settling in at No. 4 before injury struck•Getty ImagesIf Green was bowling, it would probably have meant a pat on the back for Webster for a job well done but his bustling medium pace could be important in ensuring Australia’s frontline quicks have support. Webster will also be playing county cricket from early May for Warwickshire. Therefore, if Green does come straight back into the side at Lord’s, he may have to find a spot at the top of the order – either opening or, more likely, at No. 3 – which throws open the question about whether that is an ideal spot for him. Green was in contention to fill David Warner’s opening position before the brief experiment with Smith but has only batted higher than No. 4 once in his first-class career. It could come down to whether Marnus Labuschagne has done enough to keep his place after a challenging season, which extended a two-year run where he has averaged 28.62 in Tests. He is due to join Glamorgan in May, meaning he, too, will have some cricket before the WTC final.George Bailey, the chair of selectors, has left the door ajar for a more one-off style selection for the final and it’s not beyond the realms that Labuschagne is asked to open rather than there being a recall for Sam Konstas, creating a spot for Green at No. 3 and the rest of the order runs from there. The other, less likely, route is that the four frontline bowlers (three quicks plus Nathan Lyon) are considered enough for the title shootout and Green still replaces Webster.Marnus Labuschagne is also a key part of the selection debate•Getty ImagesEven if the selectors do take an isolated view of the final at Lord’s, other decisions are only kicked down the road a couple of weeks to Barbados when the West Indies series starts. With Konstas having been left out in Sri Lanka when Travis Head opened in a horses-for-courses approach, there will likely be much thought given to enabling him to resume his Test career where there will be far less need than to do anything but bat normally. Before too long, perhaps the end of next season’s Ashes, Australia will be on the search for another new opener if Usman Khawaja decides his time is done. In an ideal world, Konstas has started to bed himself in by then. Australia’s revolving door of openers post-Warner has not hampered their success but, excluding the tactical move with Head, it has not been ideal.Green and Konstas are also not the only names to factor into the immediate batting order debate. Josh Inglis is quickly becoming hard to ignore after making a century on Test debut in Galle, albeit having been selected for his specific skills against spin.Inglis is currently at the IPL for the Ricky Ponting-coached Punjab Kings where he has just played his first game having been warming the bench. Konstas was keen for a county deal but nothing, as yet, has been forthcoming. In terms of red-ball cricket, therefore, Green has a head start but there remain some big calls to make before June.

Noor, Mujeeb handed demerit point for code-of-conduct breach

Mujeeb had broken the stumps with his towel while Noor had shown dissent when the umpire adjudged one of his deliveries to be a wide

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Sep-2025Afghanistan spinners Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have been handed a demerit point each for breaching Level 1 of the ICC code of conduct during the Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.Noor was found to have breached Article 2.8 which indicated “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match” while Mujeeb was charged with breaching Article 2.2, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.”Mujeeb had broken the stumps with his towel during the match. Both players admitted to their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, so there was no need for formal hearings.Afghanistan’s Asia Cup campaign came to an end after they lost to Sri Lanka by six wickets. Both Noor and Mujeeb picked up a wicket each in the game.

'We can beat anyone!' – Spain, England, France and Argentina issued a warning as Nico Schlotterbeck talks up Germany's World Cup credentials

Germany centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck fired a warning to their rivals Spain, England, France, Argentina and Portugal following a sensational 6-0 win over Slovakia in their final World Cup qualifying game on Monday. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back asserted that Germany "can beat any opponent" as long as they produce similar displays at next year's marquee event.

Germany dismantle Slovakia to directly qualify for 2026 World Cup

Germany produced one of their most sizzling performances under the reign of Julian Nagelsmann on Monday evening, as they handed Slovakia a brutal 6-0 defeat at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. It was a brilliant performance that secured top spot in Group A of the World Cup qualifying campaign and, as a result, a direct entry to next year's World Cup in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico.

The win came on the back of an unconvincing 2-0 win over Luxembourg last week, with pressure on Nagelsmann and his players to finish their qualifying campaign on a high against a team that shocked the Germans with a 2-0 win in the opening game in September. However, it was a mightily impressive display from the four-time world champions.

The in-form Woltemade continued his impressive goal scoring form internationally by breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute, with Serge Gnabry doubling the margin 11 minutes later. Leroy Sane, whose future in international football has been a hot topic of debate in recent months, dispelled all doubts regarding his place in the national setup by scoring a brace, his goals coming in the 36th and 41st minute.

The hosts took their foot off the pedal after the break, but they were still too hot to handle for the gobsmacked Slovaks in the second half. Substitutes Ridle Baku and Assan Ouedraogo scored the fifth and the sixth goals for Germany, respectively, to cap off a sensational performance. In the process, Ouedraogo became the second-youngest player in Germany history to score on debut, aged just 19 years and 192 days.

AdvertisementAFPSchlotterbeck wants to win the World Cup with Germany

Schlotterbeck returned to the starting lineup against Slovakia after missing the Luxembourg game due to a minor injury, playing 62 minutes. After the game, the Borussia Dortmund star spoke to and issued a strong warning to Die Mannschaft's most competitive rivals ahead of the World Cup.

“If we play like we did today, we are a very good team. And if the players who can help us but are currently injured come back, I believe we can have a very strong World Cup. The first step has been taken – and at the World Cup, the next steps will follow,” said Schlotterbeck.

“If we play the World Cup like we did at the Euros last year – with a bit more luck and slightly better performances – we can really make an impact. If we play like we did today, it doesn’t matter whether we're facing the 46th-ranked team or the top-ranked team. We can beat any opponent. We are still Germany. We want to achieve something. I want to go to the World Cup to win it.”

Germany possess ridiculous depth

The Germans spent the majority of the qualifying campaign without several key figures. Indeed, the likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Antonio Rudiger, Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz were all sidelined with injuries since the start of the season and didn't feature in a single World Cup qualifying game.

What's more, the national team has been undergoing a big transition following the 2024 European Championship, with veterans Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, and Manuel Neuer hanging up their boots internationally. Even still, there has been speculation regarding Neuer's possible return to the national setup.

Considering the aforementioned absentees are fit and available for the World Cup next summer, Germany could have one of the strongest units on paper. They will boast of ridiculous depth. Names such as Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, David Raum, Nico Schlotterbeck, Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Serge Gnabry, Nick Woltemade, Karim Adeyemi, Niklas Sule, and Maximilian Mittelstadt have become regular fixtures under Nagelsmann, while the likes of Said El Mala, Ouedraogo, Baku make up for their international inexperience with loads of talent.

While the 25-year-old has firmly established himself as one of the first names on Germany's team sheet, his future at club levels remains a topic of speculation. With his contract expiring in June 2027, Dortmund are keen to ensure their star centre-back commits his long-term future at the Signal Iduna Park.

However, Schlotterbeck remains in no rush to make any decisions over his future. "But it won’t be so early that I extend my contract. We’ll have talks now. I’ll sit down with Sebastian Kehl, make a plan, and then we’ll see what comes of it," the former Union Berlin defender revealed in September.

The likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Schlotterbeck next summer.

Middlesbrough keen on Championship title-winning manager alongside Gerrard

Middlesbrough aren’t just looking at a move for Steven Gerrard, with a Championship title-winning manager also on the Riverside radar.

Gerrard among top Middlesbrough targets to replace Edwards

Boro’s search for a new manager is now officially underway after Rob Edwards’ move to Wolves was confirmed on Wednesday. Taking to social media, Edwards released a statement, saying:

Adi Viveash remains in interim charge for the time being and oversaw the club’s 2-1 win at home to Birmingham City prior to the international break, a victory which saw Boro return to the Championship automatic promotion spots.

A top two finish in 2026 will be the ask of Edwards’ permanent successor and there have already been named linked with the Riverside vacancy.

Gerrard is one who has been heavily mooted with a move to Middlesbrough in what would be his first taste as a manager in the Championship.

Out of work since January when he left Saudi Arabia and Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard is rated by Steve Gibson and is thought to find the idea of a move to the Riverside appealing.

Journalist Graeme Bailey said: “Gerrard is well liked by Boro, he has an impressive CV and would be a significant coup to land him, but it is not certain if they could put together the package to persuade him to move to the North East.”

Middlesbrough also eyeing Tony Mowbray return

According to Bailey and The Rousing Kop, Middlesbrough are also eyeing up former manager Tony Mowbray as an alternative to Gerrard.

As well as Mowbray, Alex Neil, Paul Heckingbottom, Raphael Wicky, Gary O’Neil, Robbie Keane and Mark Robins are also named as potential candidates to come in on a permanent basis.

Mowbray, who has six wins against Middlesbrough as a manager, spent three years in charge of Boro between 2010-2013 but failed to guide the club back to the Premier League.

The 61-year-old is currently out of work, with his most recent spell in the dugout coming at West Brom, where he was labelled “exceptional” by Baggies’ sporting director Andrew Nestor.

He won the Championship title during his first stint as Baggies boss back in 2008 and has even been linked with a short-term role at Southampton in recent weeks, so Mowbray’s return to the Riverside could be one to keep an eye on.

Fewer touches than Butland: Rohl must axe Rangers man who lost the ball 11x

Thursday nights in the Europa League have so often provided Rangers supporters with a sanctuary away from the misery of domestic results.

Well, this season, they’re not even getting that.

This week, the Gers were easily swatted aside 2-0 by Roma, with Matías Soulé ghosting in at the back post to break the deadlock, before Lorenzo Pellegrini slotted home the second, teed up by Artem Dovbyk, rubber-stamping victory for the Giallorossi in Govan.

Having also been beaten by Brann in Bergan and Celtic in Sunday’s League Cup semi-finals at Hampden, Danny Röhl has become the first permanent Rangers manager in history to suffer three defeats from his first five matches in charge; not even Russell Martin started this badly!

Thus, the German faces some tough selection decisions ahead of Sunday’s potentially tricky trip to Dens Park to take on Dundee, but which player in particular deserves to drop out of the lineup?

Rangers' miserable European run

As recently as January, Rangers set the Scottish record for most away European matches unbeaten, a streak of seven games ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Now, they are in danger of also setting the record for most successive European defeats by a Scottish club.

Thursday night’s 2-0 loss at the hands of Roma leaves the Light Blues rock bottom of the Europa League table, having finished eighth last time round, also beaten by Genk, Sturm Graz and Brann in this season’s league phase so far, conceding eight goals and scoring only once.

Overall, the Gers have now lost seven successive outings in UEFA competition, following qualification defeats at the hands of Viktoria Plzeň and Club Brugge twice in August.

The unwanted record is held by Motherwell, who lost eight consecutive games in continental competition between 2010 and 2012, beaten home and away by Odense, Panathinaikos, Levante and Kuban Krasnodar.

Up next for Rangers, Braga will visit Ibrox later this month, before they’ll conclude the league phase with games against Ferencváros, Ludogorets Razgrad and Porto, so more defeats could very much be coming their way in the near future.

Before then, as they go in search of three precious Premiership points at Dens on Sunday, which summer signing suggested that they are not up to the level that Röhl requires?

The Rangers flop Danny Röhl must axe

Following Sunday’s energy-sapping clash with Celtic, playing close to 90 minutes with ten men at Hampden, Röhl made four changes against Roma, with Max Aarons, Connor Barron, Djeidi Gassama and Mikey Moore restored to the lineup.

However, Moore in particular did not stake a case for more regular playing time, as the table below highlights.

As the table documents, Moore did show glimpses of quality, attempting the most dribbles of any player on the pitch, producing two key passes and creating a big chance for Youssef Chermiti.

Nevertheless, these moments were far too infrequent, successful with only 40% of his dribbles, losing possession on 11 occasions, while winning just five of the 13 duels he contested.

The teenager was also a peripheral figure for long periods too, registering a miserly 35 touches during his 81 minutes on the pitch, which is fewer than both goalkeepers Jack Butland (45) and Mile Svilar (42).

When Moore arrived on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, he did so with sky-high expectations.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelled the “absolute top talent” as “the English Neymar”, while then-manager Martin called him an “outstanding young player”.

However, he is yet to show the Rangers fans much of this quality, still awaiting his first goal for the club, hence why former Gers midfielder Andy Halliday believes “Moore hasn’t shown me anything that tells me that Rangers should be developing a young Spurs player rather than developing their own”.

Moore was replaced by one of those homegrown prospects Findlay Curtis on Thursday, a player who does have three goals to his name this season, on target against Panathinaikos, Alloa Athletic and St Mirren.

Meantime, with Gassama, Danilo, Oliver Antman and Thelo Aasgaard also vying for the starting spots in behind the centre-forward, Moore’s performances, both against Roma and in general, have done little to suggest he should be high up Röhl’s pecking order.

He'd make Kenny unplayable: 3-4-2-1 manager now in contention for Celtic job

With the last international break of 2025 underway, it remains to be seen whether or not Martin O’Neill will be in charge of Celtic for their next competitive match.

Football Insider recently reported that the experienced manager could see his interim time in the dugout end if the club are able to land a new boss during the break.

The Northern Irish head coach, in his second stint at the club, has enjoyed an impressive time as the caretaker manager, winning three of his four matches in all competitions.

Celtic have won both of their Scottish Premiership games by a 4-0 scoreline since he came in after Brendan Rodgers tendered his resignation, beating Kilmarnock 4-0 on Sunday in what could be his last match.

O’Neill has been a breath of fresh air for the Scottish giants after the end of Rodgers’ tenure, as evidenced by the two league results, and he has worked wonders for a few players.

Johnny Kenny, for example, has stepped up under the experienced manager and shown that he can be relied on as a regular starter for the Hoops, if required.

The Celtic players who have improved under Martin O'Neill

The Ireland international is the most obvious player who has improved since O’Neill came in as a caretaker manager, as he has scored four goals in four matches, per Sofascore.

Kenny had scored two goals in 17 first-team matches for Celtic in all competitions before this run of four goals in four games under O’Neill, per Transfermarkt, which perfectly illustrates his recent improvement.

The 22-year-old marksman, who has stepped up in the absence of Kelechi Iheanacho, is not the only Hoops player who has taken their game up a gear under the interim boss, though, as Arne Engels has done the same.

Celtic’s Belgian midfield maestro did not provide a single goal or assist in eight appearances in the Premiership under Rodgers, in what was a dismal start to the campaign for the £11m signing from Augsburg.

Since O’Neil came in, though, the central midfielder has scored his first goal of the season and delivered two assists in all competitions, including a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win over Kilmarnock.

As you can see in the table above, Auston Trusty has excelled under O’Neill at the heart of the defence in his two league matches in the dugout, after the USA international did not start a single league match for Rodgers this season.

With O’Neill’s future in the dugout in doubt, the Scottish giants are reportedly looking at another manager who could make Kenny unplayable for the rest of the season and beyond.

3-4-2-1 emerges as contender for Celtic job

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy has “emerged” as a contender to replace Rodgers and O’Neil at Parkhead.

The reporter claims that he is one of a number of names on the club’s shortlist as they look for a long-term successor to Rodgers, who won the Premiership title in both of his full seasons back in Glasgow.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Joseph adds that the Hoops have now drawn up their full shortlist of options and that Nancy is a “serious” contender to land the job before the end of the international break.

The 48-year-old tactician, who typically deploys a 3-4-2-1 formation, is not the only manager on that list, of course, as Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Bodo/Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen are also in the frame.

Why Wilfried Nancy could make Johnny Kenny unplayable

If Celtic decide to go through with a move for the French head coach, the Columbus Crew boss could help to make Kenny completely unplayable by carrying on O’Neill’s good work.

Nancy, who won the MLS Cup in the 2022/23 campaign, has won 81 of his 169 matches as a manager in the MLS, per Transfermarkt, and has won two trophies, one with Columbus Crew and one with Montreal, where he coached Alistair Johnston.

In his time with Columbus Crew, the French manager has shown that he can set up a team to consistently create chances for a striker like Kenny, as Diego Rossi has thrived under his management.

Like Kenny, the Uruguayan is a lean and diminutive forward who looks to score goals through clever movement and sharp finishing, as shown in his goal in the clip below.

Neither Rossi nor the Celtic striker are going to offer a towering presence in the number nine position and bully central defenders with their physical prowess; that is not a part of their game, but Nancy has shown that he can set a team up to create chances for their profile of forward.

Rossi has played through the middle as a striker on his own in a 3-4-2-1, as one of the two 10s behind a striker, and as part of a strike pairing in a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 during his time under the Celtic manager target, and he has been a prolific scorer in those roles.

As you can see in the table above, the Columbus Crew forward has scored 40 goals for Nancy since the start of the 2024 campaign, whilst also providing 12 assists for his side in that time.

These statistics suggest that Kenny, who is a similar profile of player to Rossi, could thrive under the Frenchman if Celtic decide to appoint him as their successor to Rodgers.

The Ireland international could thrive as the lone striker in a 3-4-2-1 on his own or alongside Iheanacho, when fit, in a 4-4-2, with his recent goal spurt showing that he can score goals on a regular basis at Premiership level.

Cubs Gave Up the Weirdest Run After Outfielder’s Throw Hit Giants Player in the Head

The Chicago Cubs were blown out by the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night, losing 12-3 at Oracle Park.

During the loss the Cubs gave up one of the weirdest runs of the season on a play that had the Giants' announcers chuckling in disbelief.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Matt Chapman hit a single to right field. Then as he stood on first base he was hit in the head by Kyle Tucker's throw from the outfield. The ball bounced off his helmet and went flying over the catcher before landing behind home plate, which allowed Dominic Smith to score from third base.

Here's how that played out:

Now that is using your head, Matt Chapman.

The Cubs, who have lost two straight to the Giants, will try to avoid being swept when they square off in the series finale on Thursday afternoon.
